    You’ve got it spot on. I used to work in Rolls Royce, I used to walk around the factory building and study the rusted metal of the machines and factories building and, it was a great way to learn about what becomes of metal outdoors, how and where it rusts, corrodes from rainwater, chemicals and being hit by accidents from careless workers and fork lift trucks and some of aero engine loaders. It was amazing to see aero engines out of airplanes.

    Thanks a lot, Rachel, and you made me pretty envious! Whenever I'm out for a walk or whatever and I see heavy machinery of any sort, I only see...lovely weathering! I live in a rural area with quite a few farms around us, so it's easy to see things like tractors, crates, and whatnot. I would much prefer visiting the Rolls Royce factory, however! 🙂

    Wow! You make everything look so easy. I started this kit about 5 hours ago and had to clean my room right when starting it because the first piece i cut off the sprue shot over my shoulder and was so small, plus was the same color as the carpet. I finally found it(nowhere near where I thought it flew)and decided to watch a few build videos to see what I wanted in a finished kit. The chipping you showed is not only easy, but makes the model look like it had brushed up against trees on Endor. Thank you for this video and I hope to make my AT-ST look half as good as yours. This is my first model build that is not a modern jet/stealth plane and my 3rd build in over 35 years.

    Buenos días. Te escribo en español porque se que lo hablas. El resultado es inmejorable. Me encanta tu trabajo.

    Whats the story behind mixing acrylic paints with a lacquer thinner?

  • @TheRaceForTerra

    @TheRaceForTerra

    3 жыл бұрын

    I explain that in the TX-225 video, but in short: Tamiya XF paints aren't really acrylics, in the sense of water-based acrylics, which is what all other acrylic paints are (Vallejo, AMMO, etc.). They are alcohol-based, and their properties improve enormously when used with lacquer thinner, as opposed to X-20A or IPA.

    If you want to go full realism, you could do a gloss black as your top coat, and a matt, dirty, reddish black underneath, then add rust to some spots. Like the Mad Max Interceptor.

    HI Maximilian, thank you so much! I am sure you will really enjoy that Bandai kit. As for airbrush pressure, it depends on the nozzle size, the paint, and the effect you want, but the sort of benchmark pressure is 20 psi. If you use Tamiya paints with lacquer thinner and a 0.5mm airbrush, I would do 18-20. Happy to answer questions anytime, let me know.

  • @MaximilianJirik

    @MaximilianJirik

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@TheRaceForTerra Good Morning and thank you for your reply. That helps me a lot. I don't quite understand the relationship between pressure and nozzle size yet. Purely physical: The smaller the diameter, the higher the speed. Basically, I need less pressure for the 0.3 needle than for a 0.5 or do I misunderstand that? So regardless of the effect and the distance. I am very much looking forward to the Bandai Kit and your technique looks great. Above all, you show how "easy" you can achieve such great effects. I don't play a legion, but designing something so beautiful pleases the eye and heart. I will take a lot of time for the AT-AT and relax. If it fits, I might build a diorama around there. Best wishes My english is a bit rusty, so I helped me with Google Translate.

  • @TheRaceForTerra

    @TheRaceForTerra

    @@MaximilianJirik Would love to see that AT-AT! Bigger needle sizes allow you to use "thicker" paint with less pressure, so they are more flexible. The downside is that, if you need very fine lines (I don't), then it may be rather tricky. Does this make sense? Enjoy your next project!

  • @MaximilianJirik

    @MaximilianJirik

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@TheRaceForTerra Thanks! That makes sense to me. I'm using a IWATA Eclipse HP-SBS with a 0,35 needle, so its a great allround needle and for fine details I would use a small brush. But I saw in reviews that the Eclipse can also paint very fine lines and dots. But I still lack the practice for that. I like your technique to dilute the colors by 50% and spray them with a fine mist. This takes more time, but prevents gross mistakes that can no longer be repaired. Also I don't need much pressure and can work much closer to the model. When the AT-AT is ready, I'll send you a short video. But it will still take some time because I want to take a lot of time for it. Best wishes.
