    Finally my Series D’s arrived. Could you do a video about using (or not) Citadel ”Dry”-paint range w’ Series D’s (I’m sceptical how they work w’ ”damp drybrushing) and also a video about the longetivity of using AO textured palette (and if using wet palette in combination w’ it could extend the life expectency of one...since it’s not exactly cheap, even more so post-Brexit outside UK). Thank you for great content. Can’t wait to get started learning some new and exciting techniques!

  • @ArtisOpus

    @ArtisOpus

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks so much for the purchase, buddy! The texture palette will last you years. Priming and going again sorts it out if there are ever any issues. Dan makes a really good use of the Citadel dry paints the same way as I use them (instagram.com/p/CEK-LR0H3No/?fbclid=IwAR1B1K7kTNzLOnO0DPhGozeJSjH_KqbXjLdEsfhU6S_Y2GTC17sUSQ2oYdc). • @ArtisOpus

    @ArtisOpus

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey dude, great question, it's actually really simple, and I do it often, do everything in the exact reverse, but I'd still finish with a lighter highlight (if that works for what you have in mind) to pick out edges, be creful with not getting to much strong dark colours on the brush, go gentle, it's a bit less forgiving but totally achievable!

    Awesome to see the end to end process, including damp pad, how to hold the brush and different techniques. Question. For cleaning the brushes, after a days hard work, do you use a brush cleaner and make sure they're fully dry before next usage?

  • @ArtisOpus

    @ArtisOpus

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Neil, thanks for the kind words! Ideally yes regarding the cleaner, but 100% yes regarding letting them dry, you do not want *any* moisture in the body of the brush - as it'll carry pigments toward the ferrule via capillary action, which is what kills most brushes.

    Hi Byron, loving all the tutorials as always they are always so helpful, this was especially useful and highlighted some of the areas I’ve been going wrong with the dampening pad. I wondered if you might do a tutorial on more ‘targeted’ drybrushing, currently having a mare with sisters where I’ve airbrushed the armour and then wanting to dry brush their robes but keep hitting armour areas. Could mask the armour but that’s a pita across a squad and didn’t know if you had advice for getting into small areas around areas already painted :) thanks again and stay safe 👍

    looks great man! might have to give this a go on something, maybe some terrain, might not take the highlights so far though, personally I think that weathering can add a lot more to a model than super smooth blends and perfect edge highlights, maybe because I'm a bit crap at those, or maybe its because I have built way too many thoroughly used and abused tanks! Also, what assembly mistakes? They're modifications!

    I've seen this technique before on Kiriothtv. I think he even had the same brushes. It looks great. I am absolutely unconvinced that you need that set of brushes. A 2$ make-up brush and damp packing sponge should do the same thing.

  • @harkejuice

    @harkejuice

    3 жыл бұрын

    While I agree that you don't need THIS set of brushes. $2 make-up brushes are usually synthetic with pretty soft bristles there are a few caveats: You could try cutting them short so there is more bounce but you lose out on any feathering and your traditional dry brushing suffers. You can't really stipple with a non-modded makeup brush unless its very firm. Its also quite hard to find a make up brush with such tightly packed bristles. Paint also tends to get clogged up and they need cleaning often. They are however fantastic at applying pigment powders.

    Hey man, I actually have a box of these guys ready... the problem is how much sh** is on the models these days, I love them, but there's accessories and tentacles *everywhere* which makes it a bit more tricky than I had anticipated, I think maybe I need to find the most open/simple one, or even consider a larger scale

    Very nice! Quick question: does the paint from the first color in the blend ever get into the pad and wreck the second color when it’s on your brush? For example, if you start with an orange, and then start using a yellow on your brush, does the dampening pad get orange into the yellow on the brush?

    The dampening pad isn't a concern (unless you've gone from red - black), and you can just turn the foam over if you're concerned :). What is an issue - is the brush, so changing brushes for final steps makes more sense than changing pads :). Hope this helps!

    I did a quick test of this stippling technique on a space marine earlier and it left a really rough texture like sandpaper and any subsequent paint looked really clumpy and bitty.. nothing smooth about it.. dunno what I did wrong 😕

    This happens on a lot of people's first attempts. It could be one of two things: 1) You started off too thick/with paint not diluted enough. In more early stages keeping pain dilute and more thinned is what helps layer smoother foundation for the following layers. 2) Using too much moisture or having too much paint on your brush in any stages after the first, less is always more don't forget to test it on your texture palette before going to your model. As a final point, some paints are just unhelpful. I stopped using Sotek Green for this reason for stippling. I always recommend people try out fr the first time on terrain as it's far more forgiving. Don't be disheartened 🤞😊

    You mentioned about 2/3 the way through that if you were painting a larger area, you'd need to break it into sections. Why is that?

    Hey Byron, if you end up seeing this (I'm not sure where else to ask tbh), I was wondering if you might be able to help me a bit. I've been using the series D a bunch the lst few days trying to replicate the pure magic you make happen lol, but no matter how wet or dry my brush is the paint just comes off as dust. As soon as I wipe all the excess paint off and take it to the model it's turned to dust where I can brush it against my nail and see a cloud of dry pigment fly out into the air. I've watched this video and the first full drybrush tutorial you did a bit ago twice each but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've tried using the brush from bone dry to wet as a normal brush and everything in between and I just get lots and lots of dust when I wipe off the excess and take it to the model. Same with how much paint I'm using in the brush, whether a little or a lot it just immediately turns to dust lol. I'm trying to get the hang of using the dampening pad, but I'm still trying to learn how to gauge it with how much water or how exactly to use the brush with it. I think sometimes I might be using too much pressure, could this add to the chalky dust issue? Do I just gotta keep at it until I can get the hang of the dampening pad? I have almost np drybrushing experience prior to this so I really suck xD. Any little tips or literally anything you can tell me would be so appreciated! I dont have any terrain or big models yet, so I've just been trying it on the Nighthaunt models I'm painting and then stripping them when there gets to be too much paint on them and starting over for practice.

    Hey dude, thanks for taking the time to write such a big comment, I'll do my best to help, I don't know exactly what size brushes you're using, or what paints (som eare less helpful than others), so until then I'll give soem general pointers. 1.) It is a very different technique, and it's much easier to teach in person (if you're at a show in the future when the world is normal maybe I'll get to do so!), few people get it right first time, and even seasonned painters struggle with it. 2.) Start exactly like I have here, go bigger, and remove colours, trust me on this one, it makes it simpler, Rhino, Scenery, etc - you've picked good models, but at a more difficult scale. 3.) Use the XL (or large if you don't have XL) brush at first, it's got more body, and should be more helpful while learning. Load me up with a load of details on where you're from (humidity, temp, etc) and paints If you don't get a reply please just comment in a new video, youtube is awful for ongoing conversation notifications, and I'd like to help you get on track. Byron

    I'm really considering getting one of those drybrush sets. Kind of scared of how to clean the brushes tho. Dry paint tends to ruin brushes quickly no? Or at least stains them for ever.

    Hey, Moritz, I think you'd be surprised, using and cleaning drybrushes is the same thing IMO, just ensure to use the dampening pad before, during, and after, and work off excess on your pallet. Also avoid over saturating them (apart from when cleaning), which stps paint from working to the ferrule. I have brushes that're 2 years old, still going strong and they've been used loads, they get shorter, but still work perfectly :)
