So, basically, Anson Mount being so darn likeable to cast, crew and fans is the main reason we have one of the most 'Star Trek' feeling Star Trek shows in a long time, and a rare case of a prequel being good? Gotta give the man kudos for that! I never warmed to Discovery, and I think they're better off in the 32nd century, but I'm glad they gave us Pike.

It's been rarer that a prequel is bad, though. Both Enterprise and Smallville had the same problems in the beginning since they premiered right after a terrorist attack but they were still very good.

Strange New Worlds is the first Trek series I’ve been excited about in a long time. It’s not easy getting good chemistry from a large cast, and Anson Mount as captain helps pull it all together.

With the added craziness of Covid casting and filming, it’s quite stunning. Jess Bush said that she auditioned by video and didn’t meet cast members until filming and then had to mask up all the way to the actual takes. Amazing there was any chemistry at all, let alone the beautiful one they have.

Anson Mount is such a great addition to the hall of fame of Trek captains. We don't give him and the writers nearly enough credit for making the 8th (or 10th, depending on how you count) major recurring Captain somehow different and yet compelling in a unique way.

I've been a Captain Pike stan for as long as I've been a Trek fan. Really liked how he got the spotlight in the first Kelvin Timeline movie and then cursed mightily when they tossed the character away so abruptly in the second. Anson Mount's appeal lies in how he's crafted an image of the best boss you could ever work for. Absolutely the one in charge, but genuinely cares about his staff's opinions and welfare. And he's one of those people who not only looks for any excuse to cook for others, but is also a really good cook.

As a child in the 70s, I vividly remember watching the pilot and adoring Captain Pike. I cried at the end, and when the series continued with Captain Kirk, I hated him and kept asking about Captain Pike. I'm not enough of a Trekkie to know why things changed and they didn't carry on the series with Pike, and was too little at the time to understand.

Even with a single season released, Pike as portrayed by Anson Mount is already one of my favorite captains. I'd probably rank my personal preference in captains as Picard, Sisko, Pike, Archer, Kirk, Janeway, Dal, Freeman, Burnham. I'm not including Lorca since he wasn't the "main" captain of the show, but if I did include him I'd probably put him between Dal and Freeman. I don't think Pike would go any higher, but who knows, it'd be hard to unseat Picard and Sisko in my mind.

  • @duanebrodnick5212
    @duanebrodnick5212 Жыл бұрын

I really like Anson Mount's portrayal of Pike. He doesn't have a stick up his ass with his crew. He's relaxed, friendly, he doesn't distance himself too much. He's only shown his 'troubled' side with Spock and Una. He's not afraid to call his bridge by their given name, with the exception of Spock and Uma. Pike also isn't afraid to inject humor. The best example is in the second Gorn episode. He tells those going down to the planet, that he will turn the station wagon around if they don't behave. Yet, he does have a temper, which he used against Helmsman Erica in the final episode. I'll bet anything he was happy to show his comedic side in the fantasy episode. I really hope they show even more of his different sides. Sometimes Star Trek creators wait several episodes or seasons before broadening a character. Anson's Pike is light years different from Jeffrey Hunter's. The closest I've seen so far is Bruce Greenwood's Pike. He shows his sense of humors. There's a always a twinkle in both their eyes. You don't know what to expect. I can't wait for season two. I hope they will have Bruce come on as a different but well known Star Trek character.

I was completely (and happily) gobsmacked by "Strange New Worlds". After the disappointing first season of "Picard" and finally giving up on "Discovery" after the second season, I needed a Star Trek I could enjoy. I guess The Great Bird of the Galaxy heard my pleas and gave me SNW. HOWEVER, I just cannot warm up to its version of James Kirk. Paul Wesley doesn't give me any Kirk vibes in the least. A lesser gripe is he looks too much like Dick Sargent, the more serious and less funny portrayal of Samantha's husband Darrin Stephens on the classic sitcom "Bewitched". I just can't see this guy as Kirk. The announcement that he'll be in more episodes of SNW's upcoming second season won't turn me off the show, though.

So if SNW Kirk is a recurring character for season 2, then Pike's promotion to Fleet Captain - if the writing & production staff even paid attention to that part of "The Menagerie" - is literally gonna have to happen within the first three episodes at best (depending on when Kirk shows up). Worst case scenario, it happens in S2E1. There's one thing about that which I am highly curious about: when does that happen in relation to Kirk's promotion to Captain and assuming command of the Enterprise??

I really hope Strange New Worlds goes at least 7 seasons like TNG. I really like it, probably as much as I liked TNG growing up. In my opinion, Captain Pike is a 3-way tie for first place between himself, Picard and Sisko. I just would prefer to see less "Gorn" episodes and please bring back Lt. Hemmer somehow! :) I really enjoy sci-fi but I'm not a fan of sci-fi using a lot of gore or horror.

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike? KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain. MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active. KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years. This is from The Menagerie. If Kirk was there when it happened as he says above he would have known Pike was in the chair and there would be no need for the big reveal. This means it would happen before he got in the chair.

I always thought that In that last bit where you see Vena and Pike walking up, it wasn’t an image from the past. It was an image of the present (or promise of the near future) that Pike would be healed of his injuries as much as possible and illusions to cover up the rest. That is what I always assumed until Disc said otherwise. So, I never had any confusion over that.

I said it before and I'll say it again, by the 23rd century they've shown that bones can be healed almost instantly, so why would they need to euthanize a horse for breaking it's leg? Currently because it's next to impossible to repair a leg break in a horse and that's why we euthanize them when they break a leg. But surely vets have gotten better at healing animals in the future.

It's a **REALLY** heavy and dark show in it's subject matters. Especially after Season 2. While not making it a bad show, it certainly makes it a difficult thing to watch for many people. And I myself had to stop multiple times to not toss me into a depressed state. It's writing on a single series manner is great. But damn is it brutal and dark. It's not at all what people expect from Star Trek, so naturally on top of that it's going to get a lot of hate.

@@AndrewD8Red Pike is told by a time travel doppelganger that no matter what he does, if he changes the future - even slightly - Spock dies. But that's not how time travel works; there is no "spooky action at a distance" between the temporal event of him being disabled and Spock dying. You know how we know that? It doesn't happen in the Kelvin timeline, which is multiverse canon according to DISCO. The problem is DISCO S2 gives Pike little information about how he "dies"... but let's be honest, it's too much information and he could easily avoid it. Then SNW just says "Nah, he knows everything about..." but the authors are too stupid to realize that it's too much information. Just like personal transporters are too much technology; the existence of this technology simply illegitimates an insurmountable number of plots you could tell. With Pike knowing (a) everything about the accident AND NOW (b) everything about a war with the Romulans, he can literally solve both of those problems with little effort. But someone on the writing staff watched an episode of Doctor Who while half asleep and now Pike literally has the hand of fate working against him, so he's resolved to NOT CHANGE THE FUTURE. ... Except at the very end of the episode, he RESOLVES THE CHANGE THE FUTURE and save Una. You know, the exact same thing that the literal hand of fate and the exposition of an omnipotent time travelling doppelganger of himself just spent the last 40 minutes telling him not to do. And worst of all... Pike doesn't even realize the two are related! When Doc Brown says "what the hell," and reads Marty's letter, it's character growth and character development. But SNW Pike is too stupid to realize he's doing the exact same thing he just resolved to never do! It's unforced error ontop of unforced error.

Okay... nitpick here. The Prime and Kelvin timelines do not diverge. That is not how time works in Star Trek. Time is not linear (in the way we understand it. See also the Prophets). They are two separate parallel timelines that Spock and Nero slid into. Even if Nero and Spock 'created' that timeline, its own distinct series of events would have unfolded forward AND back through time.

I am more concerned that everyone had a pin. So the entire core crew of the flagship Enterprise has been on another ship that was tragically destroyed? How many ships does Star Fleet lose in what, like 4 or 5 years? That is a lot of tragedy.

The dumbest part in Star Trek is the idea where you are at war but you don’t include every ship you have into said war. Basically you’re fight a vicious war where your very existence is in danger yet ships like the Enterprise E wasn’t used in the dominion war or the borg attack and Pike’s Enterprise was miraculously left out of the Klingon war where the KLINGONS LITERALLY ATTACKED EARTH because Starfleet thought they should continue exploring? How does that make sense? Example: ww2 the USA at one point had 1 carrier in the pacific (which happens to be the Enterprise) as the carrier became the primary ship of war it was literally the Big E verses the empire of japan, the USA was cautious about losing her but she still fought and WON! Imagine if we didn’t commit everything to the war. What would have happened if we said oh k]no the Enterprise is too valuable so let’s hide it over here? Nothing good is the answer ask Germany what happened when they hid their warships instead of using them in either WW1 or WW2, they were picked of in port in case you didn’t know.

There’s the Alternate, Prime, and Canon, universes. Canon Universe is what fans knew and what Star Teek followed until Jar Jar Abrams ruined this franchise. Couldn’t finish the video. SNW isn’t terrible, I enjoy it. But it’s not the same universe TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY exist in.
