I love episodes like the one with Sato, wherein command crew recognize the contribution of people like Ensigns. Most of the time, when a main or major character does something heroic, a moment's consideration and thought reveals that there must be at least a few people doing their part. A good commander knows and acknowledges that, even if they deserve the "public face" credit for whatever, they can not accomplish their heroic acts without an equally heroic crew. For instance, the Pen Pals episode. The Command crew needed to discuss the incident at large and still had to run the ship on the whole. The incident will have repercussions, and they can't just drop their overall duties, so they delegate. The episode gives us a solid look at the behind the scenes efforts of the lower ranks. I haven't seen Lower Decks yet, but I'm glad to see a whole series based on the background heroes.

TNG: Relics was one of my absolute favorites. I mean, a rare visual concept of a Dyson Sphere and Scotty? 😍 Ensign Rager had to of been trusted enough by Picard that he didn't ask Riker or Data to take over, as we see happen to many ensigns. That trust says an incredible amount.

Crewmen are lower decks. Ensigns or midshipmen in the rest of the world are junior officers usually called snotties and are not really lower decks.
My vote for the most striking looking ensign is Lt. Jae. What a looker....
True story… the actress who played Ensign Lang was my favorite babysitter when I was a kid. 🥰
Yes. They proposed bringing back Sito on Ds9 as a ex POW who had been brutalised for years by tge Cardassians but had been liberated or rescued. They never got round to it but it could have worked. Considering Worf was on DS 9 and Erzu Dax was a counsellor who could have treated her. It's unlikely the character will ever appear again although it's possible she c an appear in the novels or comic books which aren't canon anyway.
@mycroft16

That would have been a hard episode to watch. The trauma and PTSD from that... not to mention the absolute mind games the Cardassians play with their prisoners. Hell, she could even have been sent back so twisted she tries to cause destruction, etc, before being helped to find herself again.

Are we not counting Ensign Lon Suder because technically he was no longer an Ensign at the time? But he spent a year learning to repress violence, disgusted at himself for the murder he had committed. Then had to gun down an engine room full of Kazon in order to help Paris take back the ship before being shot in the back. Deserves some love.

Sito Jaxa is the first - usually only - ensign I think of. How she is number two here and not number one baffles me.
Mirror Universe (Prime Ensign) Sato is my favorite ensign.
I wish they hadn't cheaped out on the writing royalties, tying TNG to Voyager with Locarno would have been a great move instead of using the same actor and basically same back story with Paris. Better redemption arc.

Honestly ensign Kim was downright exploited after risking life and limb for seven years he never got promoted even after Voyager picked up some rogue Starfleet officers from another ship trapped in the Delta quadrant. I mean how many times did he literally die for the ship that at least deserves a pip. Chakotay didn't think Kim could cut Starfleet but he proved him wrong.
Ellie, my young friend! You are functioning at Warp 10!:)
Elemental or instrumental?
6:08 Annika Hanson was the name of Jeri Ryan's character from Star Trek Voyager, and an unofficial name for Star Trek Picard, so far as I know
How many times have Ensigns saved the day? Every day. They just don't get the credit.
All the ensigns as a whole performed admirably in their tasks, mainly to die horrible, grisly deaths, from getting shrunk down to little crushable talcum powder blocks, to being run through with telephone pole sized spears, the steadfastly marched forward to their deaths, so that the stars of the show could heroically carry on. Thus the legend of the red shirt was born!!😀👍
Harry's biggest fail: Saying "no" when 7of9 wanted to copulate.
Pardon the Seinfeld reference, but yes, Dalen Quaice's (I mean Sid Fields') Senegalese housekeeper gets the top spot on this list.
The original Harry never died! All matter on the ship was duplicated in a way that they were both the original material that was split and duplicated. So they both were the original Harry.
love the list but missing ensign Roe laren
Crusher and Leffler...The Game!
I'd've swapped Rager and Sito, but it was a close thing.
I don't believe it's canon, but the 'original' Harry Kim sorta survives. The game 'Star Trek Online' shows how his body is picked up by the Kobali...a species that requires alien corpses to reproduce. They somehow 'infect' these corpses with a virus that slowly transforms them into new Kobali and then resurrects them (not necessarily in that order). The new Kobali at first has fairly strong memories and personality traits of their old life, but quickly these fade and they become truly new entities...with a weird background and origin. So...that happened to the original Harry.

Ensign now Captain Kim, in Star Trek Online, meets his old doppleganger self when your character meets him in the Delta Quadrant. Your character has little input on his feelings, but Kim feels all sorts of things....having thought that version (the OG version) was lost forever. I forget the whole story, but Ensign Kim does get a second chance at life. Just not the life he expected.
Ensign Chekov somewhat helped cured Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scott from an disease in the episode “The Deadly Years”. Later in the episode, after finding the cure, Kirk saved the day, but it would not be possible without Chekov’s fear on the planet surface (an increase of adrenaline which was the cure). Watch the episode if you don’t believe me.
After Voyager Harry makes quite a career in Star Trek canon and non canon
ellie- you sound like you're enjoying this one... I feel a certain identification happening... are you the ensign of TrekCulture? heheh
She didn't even destroy the ...antenna dish on the roof ( ha ha) Lando Calrissian got "more than a scratch" on the Falcon in ROTJ after promising Han "I won't get a scratch on her".....
IT should be noted that with Ensign Lang, that is from Season 3 Ep 24, so she has at least 3 years of Starfleet experience, its not like she was fresh out of the Academy
In Star Trek Online Harry Kim reappears as a captain. Eternal Ensign no more.
In the alternative future seen at the start of the series finale, "Endgame", Kim has been promoted to the rank of Captain aboard the USS Rhode Island.
Harry Kim is the de facto best ensign!
Missed opportunity to plug Star Trek Online by bringing up "the original Harry Kim" being revived by the Kobali. Also, "Lower Decks! Lower Decks! Lower Decks!" should've been first.

I like how the Enterprise series brought how dodgy the Klingons actually are. Worf though was raised by humans. Vulcans weren't much better!
I guess the reasons they don't do stuff like the L-manouevre often has several reasons: a. you can get dizzy when you see your ship moving up or down but don't feel it. That effect is the major reason VR can get quite problematic, when you don't move yourself around with what you see. So they avoid this stuff and stay in the plain field. Interestingly in the Captain Future Anime they showed how frightening it can look to an untrained person when you do such movements or even fly in spirals b. also the initial dampers are most likely best when the ship is not moving in abrupt movements away from the enforced gravity field direction. Yes, you might not feel much when the ship is doing a looping while also doing spiral movements - but the dampers have to work hard = can fail more easily - and you don't want your crew to abruptly hit the ceiling just because one of your dampers failed.
