D&D wouldn't have that though. They did not even show any scenes implying that Renly wanted Stannis dead in the show. Making him look like the good guy and the victim and Stannis a murderer who is ready to kill his own brother for the throne. Fucking D&D.

Thing is, they had so many really good actors for characters that could change the game, Alexander sidig, Stephen Dillane and the actors who played Kevan and Randyll, Natalie Dormer, Dianna Rigg. And what do dumb and dumber do? Give more screen time to that albino princess bitch. How did aegon's descendants turn out to be such annoying whinny brats? And Stannis' plot given to that undead pretty boy Kit Harrington so that the fangirls can gush when he becomes "kang in dah norfff" ffs. Rant over, needed to get that out.

@@thekub32 basically everything from the last few season is going to be everything that Stannis will achieve in the books. They gave it to Jon in the show because he at the end end up being the main character. So they wanted to start highlighting him.. it's annoying. But maybe in 20 years HBO will do an exact replication. Or maybe some other studio. Issue is, this show had created do much hype where there is nearly no reason for any studio to reboot the series. Especially with the newly announced prequals..

These made me love Stannis more.

But, I did love him, Ser Davos, I know that now. I swear, I will go to my grave thinking of my brother's peach. Manly tears were shed

this speech is so sad cause the peach represents the good of life and when renly draws it out, stannis thinks its a sword. it shows stannis cant even see the good in life without considering it a threat of some sorts. it shows how stannis' duty had turned him into a mess, and he realized it in this speech.

People fixate often on the reference to Stannis as iron: cold, hard and inflexible. But one of the quirks of iron is that when it goes through fire and you beat the hell out of it, it becomes steel. To me that seems to be Stannis' character arc in a nut shell: this tough almost brutal man being forced to face the fact that the world doesn't bend, and changing for the better, but only after losing so much.

It seems like Stannis and Renly are the opposite on that front. Stannis is gravely dutybound and can't see the joy in life, while that's all Renly can see is joy and none of the duty. Robert was the true steel in that regard, duty, honor, and plenty of joy and merriment(though too much, later in life)

@@AveTrueToCaesar8212 Having Stannis burn Shirren is one of the biggest unspoken tragedies we overlook among all the other horrible things the show runners did. I believe Shirren will be burnt to death, by the queen and the red women. But Stannis would NEVER have harmed his daughter. NEVER.

The peach scene shows that life in politics has turned Stannis into a mess of a human being.

Stannis is going to burn shireen in the books aswell I think, but its because he things its for the greater good - its logical for book Stannis aswell to destroy everything he hold dear if there is a chance to fullfil his destinity.. the series just made him look like a madman even tho he truly is the only king who cared and the rightful king by all rights of god and man

@@BFB1Mr I do think Shireen will burn in the books, but not with Stannis knowing it, I think Mel and Selyse will burn her behind his back and Stannis won't exactly be happy with it, book Stannis made it crystal clear that Shireen is his heir and I don't see him allowing it to happen willingly, you also have to factor in that Mel, Selyse, and Shireen are all at the wall at the moment with Stannis preparing an attack on the Boltons at Winterfell, which is very far from the wall and his army is starving so he doesn't really have time to wait for Mel and Shireen to arrive until he takes Winterfell with that little beacon/ice lake trick he's most likely going to pull off, so if Stannis is going to do it himself it will have to be after he takes Winterfell in the books, which he probably will unlike in the show.

Hm... empathy? Not really. His main weakness is that he can't put himself in anyone else's shoes. He is always slightly paranoid that anything people do have some secret intent because he can't quite understand values and emotions he doesn't personally share. That's what broke Robert up with him, asking to have all prostitutes of Kingslanding executed for being sinful, not giving a fig if they had or not other means of survival. That's also why he obsesses over Renly's peach, because he can't fathom offering someone you are about to fight something pleasurable, so it must have been a trick, but WHAT kind of trick is his unanswerable question. That's also - greater a problem- why he can't consider how an entire continent of people who follow the Seven will deal with a king that is 100% going to burn the High Septon and all the major septries for a foreign god as soon as he is crowned, apparently just because a hot woman said so.

This should have been in the show. It shows Stannis true character.

I’ve always been a very harsh critic of Stannis supporters, but this speech really connected me to his character

In the book the "And for Renly" is actually asked as a question by Davos. However, I think the speech is better if you read it as if Stannis himself said it, as in this reading. Makes a lot less sense however, as Stannis is the one who killed him.

Gerian Mepsn it is not clear if he knew Melissandre killed him, probably not. And even if he did I feel the speech just fits even better, he loved his brother but he was traitor and law punished it with death

I was here, lying on my bed, listening to Stannis' sorrow about his beloved brother, Renly. My eyes were close and I could imagine colors and imagery of this scene then a FUCKING AD JUST STARTLED ME HAHAHAHA

The King Who Cared

"I swear I will go to my grave thinking of my brother's peach", hits me every single time I listen to this, its as if he's saying "I'll die without realizing I should have had more fun in life" There are many reasons why Stannis is loved by the fans, he has been slighted against all his life but is still hard and stubborn and unyielding in the face of doom as always, his way of talking is awesomely non-apologetic, he is probably the best battle commander alongside Randall and has deeds on his resume that impressed the likes of Tywin and Ned. Even though we realize he probably would not be a great king, and Reny would have been a much better king but we still hate Reny for joining the world in defying his brother. There are many reasons for us to like Stannis but in the end, we side with him because we just want him to have a good time for once.

The sad part is that of the 3 brother Stannis loved his brothers the most even if he doesn’t say it and even says he doesn’t love Robert, but he only says that out of anger since Robert chose Ned but anyway it’s sad because he’s brothers didn’t give 2 shits about him, and even now we see he’s fighting for justice and was is right and deep down feels guilty for Renly because he knows he played a part in his death

It's crazy how complex and rich this entire situation is and how much potential it could have, and D and D just made it into a STANNIS BAD theme to show how edgy they could be. Very sad for the character development and writing of the show

I really like this depiction of Stannis.

I have listend to this hunders of times. Even after all those years, still goosebumps. Amazing work you have done valkyrist. Stannis will get a death worthy of a king, in the books - and I will wait for it.

Lol when I contrast this scene with that dumass beetle story scene from the show it shows how artless D&D are on their own (or when they don’t try).

This space and reading are great. I do wonder how much of it you could add in the last conversation between him and Brienne, and how much people would be torn about this softening him vs keeping the hardness the show had given him. It seems like it got the early seasons narratives about power nailed and would be comparable to Cerci's speech about lying on the ground pulling up weeds, while also showing where Stannis' hard edge comes from. I also wonder if it would change Brienne's resolve in 'doing her duty' and make not showing his death even more of a talking point.

I am a bit late, but its in Clash of kings.

I love Martin's ability to make every character very HUMAN. I love Stannis as a character, and as a middle child, I feel his pain. He is not the greatest, not the most charismatic either... Always trying to prove his value, trying hard to be loved and it is his very ruin.
