Kings used to fight in battles, but they slowly moved further away from the battlefield, eventually resulting in them not being there at all (modern age leaders). It's simply too dangerous to put someone that important in a life threatening situation. Sure, it's great, until the leader dies and destabilizes the whole realm.

They totally misinterpreted ALOT of things and important character beats vital to the story .....and were totally exposed when they didn't have the source material to follow beat for beat. Every character was a shell of themselves and all of the drama , intrigue and character motivations that make the story so special disappeared in favor of flashy spectacle and hack fanfic. They are great producers of OTHER ppls work , but AWFUL writers/creators when the training wheels aren't there. They ruined the show to the point that I can't even watch the great seasons. Then GRRM working on EVERY prequel , wildcards bullshit he can pawn to HBO after allowing them to tank HIS story in the first place has taken away my LOVE and it was love...of ASOIAF! The most major difference for Stannis in the two works is Shireen. By the end of Dance of Dragons, Shireen is alive and well. Given the depiction of Stannis we've been given in the books, the very idea that he would ever acquiesce to having his daughter burnt alive is also laughable. Not only does he genuinely love Shireen but Shireen is also his rightful heir.

I cannot agree more. Renley had zero claim to the throne: his only "claim" was that he was lovable, which is the worst possible justification ever. He raised armies against his own brother, knowing full well that he had no legitimate claim. Stannis offered to make him his heir, which when you consider his advanced age and Renley's relative youth guarantees that at some point in the near future he'd be king. That offer alone shows that Stannis wasn't obsessed by some vainglorious pursuit. He wanted continuity, legitimacy, and to spare the people of Westeros the suffering he'd seen first hand. For Stannis, this was duty and obligation. For Renley, this seems to be more about glory, ceremony, and adoration. Otherwise, he would have accepted this incredibly graceful and generous offer. And spared hundreds of thousands.

"Why would you want it, then?" Davos asked him. "It is not a question of wanting. The throne is mine, as Robert's heir. That is law. After me, it must pass to my daughter, unless Selyse should finally give me a son." He ran three fingers lightly down the table, over the layers of smooth hard varnish, dark with age. "I am king. Wants do not enter into it. I have a duty to my daughter. To the realm. Even to Robert. He loved me but little, I know, yet he was my brother. The Lannister woman gave him horns and made a motley fool of him. She may have murdered him as well, as she murdered Jon Arryn and Ned Stark. For such crimes there must be justice. Starting with Cersei and her abominations. But only starting. I mean to scour that court clean. As Robert should have done, after the Trident. Ser Barristan once told me that the rot in King Aerys's reign began with Varys. The eunuch should never have been pardoned. No more than the Kingslayer. At the least, Robert should have stripped the white cloak from Jaime and sent him to the Wall, as Lord Stark urged. He listened to Jon Arryn instead. I was still at Storm's End, under siege and unconsulted." He turned abruptly, to give Davos a hard shrewd look. "The truth, now. Why did you wish to murder Lady Melisandre?" I think Stannis wining The Battle of Winterfell (no Bolton raid and Shireen burning) and eventually going on to unite The North would've been better as The Vale and The Tully Rebels would join in Stannis' assault on The Twins and eventual march on King's Landing. Judging by the situation, maybe The Tyrells and Tarlys join Stannis' side and help in taking the city, leading tot the deaths of The High Sparrow, Tommen, Cersei, Jaime, Kevan, and Lancel. Now I know what you're gonna say, where am I going with this? By the time Stannis is coronated, Daenerys would sail to Westeros and when she arrives, it'll be Daenerys vs. Stannis. This is a series where likable and non-likable characters are apart of the same faction and will fight other likable and non-likable characters. When war between the two fire champions breaks out, Daenerys would win but would suffer heavy casualties. Not just that, but men loyal and Stannis and others distrusting of Daenerys would rise up or plot against her, keeping Westeros at war when The Long Night comes. This would've been better than the good v. bad story of the show. This scenario fits in with the thesis of the series.

But, let's be generous. When the general says half of the men deserted, he says all the sellswords with all the horses, that would still leave the King with 3000 men roughly (2000 sellswords + 1000 stormlander/dragonstone men) Then, somehow, when he marches on Winterfell he only has 1200 men. He should still have 3000 men!. Let's say the cold count killed 500. He STILL should have AT LEAST 2500 men. But the dumbass writers realized that even if King Stannis had cold hungry men, they're still veterans and 2500 men could still give the 2300 Bolton cavalry a run for their money. So they just 'misplace' 1300 men, so Stannis could lose.

Stannis and Davos were two of the most honorable men of integrity on the show. Melisandre was the wedge that was driven between them, and her interference worked not because she showed Stannis something tempting, but because she drove him towards what he felt was his duty in the first place, making it easier for him to make certain sacrifices that he wouldn't have made otherwise. The Triangle Dynamic was one of the most interesting to watch unfold and develop on the show. I think the actor who portrayed Stannis did a phenomenal job capturing the stoic yet compassionate side of the character. He acted noble as someone in pursuit of a throne should be, but he was also still humble from his long experience on the battlefield with his men.

GRRM set it up to look like realistically, Stannis stands no chance (I won't spoil ADWD but your mind will 100% change if you pay attention. He has every disadvantage. At this point the odds are in the Boltons favour. But Stannis has no thematic reason to lose. GRRM uses death as a plot device. Stannis' death and defeat will mean nothing if he dies at Winterfell. It will mean much more if he dies after taking Winterfell, leaving it vulnerable, or dying when fighting the Others. Look at it from a narrative persepective. Two POVs left in that region. Both with Stannis. There is no POV at Winterfell and Theon isn't going back. You basically have to guess what GRRM is planning, is he doing this to Stannis to write a realistic way for the Boltons to defeat the best commander ever? Or is he trying to make the battle more unpredictable by evening out the numbers instead of making it so obvious Stannis will win. When Stannis showed up at the wall, he had narrative purpose and would realistically destroy house Bolton. Not anymore. But he still has narrative purpose, something the Boltons no longer have. GRRM's characters make mistakes that fit with their developed character traits. There is no possible flaw Stannis has that could make him lose the battle in an interesting way. Plus GRRM is going out of his way to have Roose Bolton send out his armies seperately. This gives Stannis a huge advantage. There are at least 10 incredible ways the battle could play out. All of them are Stannis victories. I'm not saying that because I'm a huge fan. A Bolton victory has no way of being interesting or well written yet. There are four types of claim: The chosen heir: Robert chose Joffrey. Ned *changed the will*, but Robert named Joffrey specifically. Sure he would have probably changed that if he knew the truth, but he didn't. Under Westorosi law the chosen heir supercedes the direct bloodline. Joffrey WAS the legitimate king, the Will Stannis waved around was fake. Bloodline: By blood inheritance Stannis the legitimate heir of House Baratheon....but House Baratheon are NOT legitimate heirs to the Iron Throne, as Robert was an usurper and Daenerys (/Jon/Aegon) are the rightful heirs. Incidentally if you're going for genetic rather than legal bloodline you need to count Robert's bastards. A Popular Choice: Renly was the candidate most people *wanted* on the Iron Throne, mostly because while he was a smug prick he wasn't going to start any wars, go an rampant killing sprees, or start dismembering people who help him for not following THE LAW (TM). Force of Arms: Well the Lannisters kinda won, so that goes back to Joffrey. This is the same type used by Robert (even if he claimed Targ blood as justification) and Aegon the Original. Force of Arms probably WOULD have been Renly because he could actually muster the strongest force, but Stannis murdered him for being more popular than him. There is no single claim to power that gives Stannis legitimacy, his claim is essentially: "Force of arms justified my brother becoming king, but now it doesn't count, only strict bloodline order counts. But only legitimatized bloodline so none of my brother's bastards. And we're still keeping his usurpation in place, so not the earlier bloodline that's still around." To justify Stannis as 'the true king' you have to flip between claim types arbitrarily to get the desired result. Dude is by far the only Iron Throne claimant who isn't a fuckwit, this I'll grant you, and this doesn't diminish his character (if anything it adds some depth) but he was very much blinded by a desire to have what he saw as rightfully his. He was opposed to a definite villain yes, but he was a brutal authoritarian who felt he should be on top and lied to himself about why. If he truly didn't care he would have supported Renly - even if the vaunted precedence was in the way, he could have relinquished his claim at any point - as 'King' he had that right. But he was bitter that people loved his brother despite him not being 'worthy'. Edit: I will grant you I don't *think* Stannis doesn't KNOWS Ned faked the will, but this comment is as much about the audience/readers declaring him the true king, and WE know he isn't.

@@Wirrn The chosen heir certainly doesn't supercede direct bloodline in Westerosi culture at all, this did not happen at any point in any of the stories. King Maegor chose Aerea Targaryen as his heir but she was promptly ignored after his death in favour for his cousin Jaehaerys. Later Viserys I's chosen heir was also ignored in favour for his traditional heir. Princess Rhaenyra is remembered as a pretender in Westerosi history while Aegon II is remembered as the rightful monarch (Stannis himself mentions this in the books). The only case to be made is the Great Council to decide Jaehaerys' heir, but that a very specific case in which the entire realm came together when their was no clear heir because they kept dying. And those are only about trueborn heirs of the same dynasty. You also can't complain the will is fake when the circumstances surrounding Joffrey being named heir are fake, Robert named him heir on the basis of being his eldest son, which he wasn't.

Ned Stark being his Just Steward had no sympathy for bastards, especially ones with Inbred traits, while his Arbitrary Spymaster Littlefinger never had a high Opinion of Bobby---a classic blunder. *Show stannis was good* It's a perfect story of a guy who sacrificed everything for duty. There's already rob, ned and jon if you want just good likeable honorable characters. But with Stannis, you couldn't just hate him because he was fair and badass but also not love him cause he was fanatic about his ways and (kinda understandably) followed the red b*tch's god. Shereen was like the last bit of humanity he had left and sacrificing her in his last moments of doom fitted perfectly the vibe on that moment and highlights everything i said before, how he was all about his destiny and not himself. But ultimately loosing to the bolton's it's very game of thrones like despite how sad it is and other characters deserve that revenge more anyway. So it's a good show of both lawful tenacity and how it can lead to demise in the end. Loved every bit of that story from beginning to end.
