How well does the handle close with the pickle lid? Does the lip interfere?

Pickle lid frying pan looks small enough to use over an alcohol stove as well. Maybe over a Trangia with a simmer ring.

When I saw that pickle jar, I thought ole James has lost his mind… This epic little bit of whizgiggerry may be one of my favorite bushcraft hacks ever. The fork as a handle seems almost too simple to work, yet it is more than adequate. It seems excellent to the point of bushcraft elegance.

Thank you so much for the kind words!
If you can find that particular lid, this is an excellent "hack" for the Stanley cook set. As far as the lid is concerned for cooking and making it nonstick, I've had great success with carbon steel pans and cast iron doing what you did to the lid to rid it of the paint/seal (heating the metal and adding oil to create a natural nonstick coating). I guess I'm going to Jimmy Johns or some other place that uses these large jars with lids so I can get what I need. I saw the fork mod and thought that if you took enough time, you could bend those tines of the fork w/o the torch, but who has that kind of time? Break out the ol' Benzomatic butane flamer and go to town!! Why wait???? LOL!! (forgive the humor....it seemed to lend itself to the human flaw of impatience) Thank you, Mr. Bender, for another efficient and practical modification for a Stanley product. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your next installment of the Ohio wilderness homestead series.

Thanks for watching! We are currently filming for episode 14!
that is the cutest little working frying pan set up in have ever seen! What I have learned so far from your videos is just how much of an abundance we have, yet I have been blind to seeing how to use it. having a basic understanding of some foundational principles, it really opens up a world of possibilities! there are so many fancy gadgets and bits and bobs, but these things we have often overlooked can just as easily be used in place of those fancier ones. of course everything has a place and time, but it is comforting to know there are other options. also, you sort of remind me of MacGyver the way you are actualy able to make something life saving out of what just looks like trash and your multi tool. thank you for sharing your talents and creativity.

Thanks so much for watching and for the MacGyver compliment!
That was just amazing.... I can't imagine how much research goes in before coming up with such a combo! Just the fork and lid for a pan made me think of cooking an entire 5 course meal for 1 while camping! To be real, I'll probably just use that pan trick to save time on the smaller things, but what a time saver when you can afford to carry more than 1 pan!

Worst cook set ever. Good for coffee, bad for food. You have to stir constantly or it burns the bottom while not cooking the top. It's just too narrow for food.
Great hack. While bread is toasting next to fire you can fry the egg. Breakfast complete.

Thanks James for another brilliant idea about bending the fork. What do you think about bending the outer 2 prongs instead to make the grip wider and more steady? The inner forks can be flayed outwards to still grab the food. It may look like an alien contraption but I thought it might work better.
@WayPointSurvival
2 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't work as well because the curve is a little too extreme to fit the outer tines well. It could probably be made to work Iif you want a to fiddle with it.

Bloody Amazing idea there, mate. I bought my first Stanley Cook Set thanks to you & then during lock down had the chance to build some of those add-ons. But I like the idea of the mini fry pans. I used to travel alot for work so the idea of a quick brew & a feed are perfect for my needs. I have the butane stoves, but for a quick pitstop your set up would be ideal. Thanks.

you know looking at the fork part, maybe bend the outer tines instead of the center ones, it may make a better option for eating with it without messing up the stability!
@WayPointSurvival
2 жыл бұрын
It might make a better option for eating, however, it is too narrow to be stable on the bottom that way and too wide to fit the curve at the top.
I’ve read that to fry eggs, don’t drop the egg into a cold skillet. First, heat the skillet so a drop of water dances on it. Then add oil, and finally add the egg. The chicken is a versatile animal. We eat them before they’re born, and after they’re dead. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Almost feel like that was made just for me James because I told you that mine didn't come with a lid like yours did. That was a pretty awesome hack. I really did like that and the way you bent that fork I know what you mean about having to heat it a little because I used to bend them and make belt buckles out of them. But on to the hack that was wonderful I really enjoyed that. I know that wasn't meant directly towards me but I do appreciate it I'm sure there's other people that didn't get theirs although I did buy mine brand new. Thanks again James and have a great day stay safe and keep your powder dry!

I love these Nifty little projects. I would certainly keep the original lid but it's nice to know that you could make a substitute if you lose or damage the original lid. Now of course if the crap hit the fan or if you're just going for an overnight or you could grab a fry pan from the kitchen but it's preferable to have something small and light like you created when you're carrying everything in a backpack.
