The Ubiquitous Stanley Cook Set

My version of the Stanley Cook Set, what's in it, how I pack it, and it's current state of modding. Modding? Really.

Looks like a nice little kit you’ve put together. Nice (and a bit worrying) that there are so many of us enjoying putting together little kits to heat water. The Stanley set does satisfy three of the Great American Loves: It’s a thing, it’s a thing that can hold other things, and it can do things with the things it can hold.

There do seem to be a plethora of similar videos out there concerning water procurement and purification. To be honest, I use that kit almost daily just to make a cup of instant coffee with store purchases water. There is no coffee machine where I work so I set up what I like to call my tailgate coffee bar. It's a nice hot treat on these chilly PNW mornings that reinforces my ability to use the kit should I find myself in a more desperate situation. Thank you for the comment and the inspiration to produce a few videos of the kit in action!

Never be without a Bic Lighter for convenience, but also, NEVER Depend on it. Especially in the more humid climes, the flint WILL cause the striking wheel to freeze up and the flint will disintegrate, UNLESS you use the lighter on a daily basis, as in smoker. Then the heat from frequent light ups, keeps the corrosion at bay. ALWAYS have a ferro rod and matches as a back up. Fire is just to important not too. Otherwise, very nice cook kit!

In the beginning of your video you mentioned Goodwill. I can totally agree with you that there are some pretty surprising things. At your local Goodwill store as far as camping and hiking gear and equipment are concerned. I have found some amazing deals on the above mentioned items at my local Goodwill store before. Everything from a The North Face 65 liter backpack, rain jacket, Big Anges sleeping bag, and other goodies. Just goes to show that you don't have to spend a lot of money on some good camping and hiking gear.

Thank you, was pretty helpful for me. Got the Stanleyset in use for years, but as yours, mine changed over the years. Though I don´t like the loud gasburners, mine contains the trangia burner and a litte windshild made from an old sweetbox. Slightly rolled it is inside the big cup, than one litte steelcup and that is even filled with a round box of herbs. Some teabags and instantcoffee complete my set. Without an extra cup outside, the whole Stanleyset fits in most molle bottleholders, so you can attach it wherever you like. Thank you again, will start improve my set again, now! Have a nice day.

You have a nice presentation, as in you speak well and have your thoughts pretty well organized. You are knowledgeable on your topic. You aligned your camera well, something that I find extremely irritating on some channels, even those with thousands of subscribers. A couple of suggestions, make an outline or draft bullet points for what you want to convey in your video. If you need other equipment not within easy reach, make it readily accessible and immediately usable for your presentation. Pulling contents from an assembled kit is a little like opening Christmas presents and is entertaining as the viewer anticipates what is next; however reassembling the kit is just time consuming and unnecessary. Finally, you have a very pleasing personality and should do very well on KZread. Good luck with your channel.

Nice. For me my cup nests INSIDE perfectly, instead of outside. I simply put my own bandana into the stanley, then my cup, fold the bandana into the second cup and then throw all the supplies inside the cup, shove the bandana down and on the top I have anywhere from 2-5 instant hot drinks, usually coffee and cider. I carry a lighter with duct tape on it inside, also have had a propane converter for years, a folding titanium spork, and a green scrub pad. Only stuff used for eating is in the kit and I consider it a backup lighter. Otherwise I have a medical bag (small) and a completely dedicated fire bag, which is a ferro and another lighter. Always 2 lighters in total and one ferro, I do NOT carry tinder other than duct tape which I've never really had to use. Never had a problem finding/making tinder even when it's soaked.

I was treated at the hospital but nothing helped until one day my aunt told me to drink activated charcoal in water every day and to grab a potato and blend it in 2 cups of water and drink it every day. I did that for about one month straight plus a change my diet and ever since I’m cure from AR. That was 20 years ago I’m 47 now with no health issues thank God. Try it, you have nothing to lose but Acid Reflex. Hope this can help you or anyone with this problem. Cheers.

I use a MSR stove. For faster boiling times, use a pot with a wider footprint so the flame has plenty of surface to make contact with.. The tall/skinny Stanley pot is slower to boil water as the flame comes in contact with such a small bottom surface. I suppose it doesn't matter if you have extra fuel and aren't in a hurry.

  • @colockumcraft254

100% agree. The biggest flaw in the entire set is the footprint of the cook pot. It would be better suited for small wood fire cooking. Thanks for the comment!

There seem to be 2 very different reactions to the plastic tab on the lid: 1) "I hate that plastic tab, it melted the first time I put the kit into the fire, I replaced it with a (D-ring, key ring, piece of wire, etc.)". 2) "Never had a problem with the plastic tab, as long as you don't put the kit directly into the fire (keep it off to one side, not directly in the center) and keep the tab standing up, it doesn't have a problem. Had mine for of years, and it's still fine." I rarely use an open fire (I carry a Trangia-clone alcohol burner in the kit), so mine hasn't had a problem, but I can certainly see where an open fire could be a problem for it.

Quite honestly the thing I dislike the most about the Stanley cook pot. Why did they taper the bottom and make it so narrow? The cup does work much better on that specific stove especially!

Hello 🙋‍♂️ Ref: Struggling with your rubber bands !! I am sure you are aware that you could also use the “inner” rubber tube of a bicycle tyre - to cut it into various different lengths of bands that will allow you to wrap around your “tins” in order to make them completely waterproof !! If you cut the tube long enough - you can make your small tins completely waterproof and this will ensure they will never rust - even if you have a condensation challenge in your pack. Tiny, tiny little bit of talcum powder smeared over the object you are trying to give protection too will you some flexibility when positioning the bands around the objects you are trying to protect. The rubber also can double up as a cover for a finger dressing in case of an emergency 🆘 Also, if you are “struggling” to wrap them round - when your fingers are cold and wet, all you have to do is “dip” the cut bands into some hot water - that way the rubber becomes more flexible and you can easily wrap them around any of the circumference tins or plastic containers you are trying to keep dry !! Thanks 🙏 Take care 😷✌🏾 James 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Find a neoprene can cooler. They stretch enough so that you can slide it over the Stanley and then slide that into your GSI cup. No more rattles.

Not gonna argue with you there. The Stanley is awful precarious perched on top of that tiny stove and it's small footprint isn't as efficient boiling water as a larger pot.

  • @rcash3625

I would carry the stanley "cook set" with a traditional boy scout style mess kit.... The stanley can only boil water which is great if all you eat is stuff like mountain house on the trail. Me personally I dont its not cost effective and dont consider a Steel cup to boil water in a cook set.

The Gospel of salvation of our souls: 💜💕❤️❤️💖✨💖❤️📖✝️🕎💡💡❤️❤️💞💜💕For what I received I passed on to you as of [first importance]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time,

Dear God💗❤️💕❤️💞🙏in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the , life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness. I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin. You said in the bible that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved. Right now I confess Jesus as my Lord. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved. Amen.
