Great video sir! Really interesting. I have Dunlop Sport Maxx GT run flats all round with the 20" staggered setup on my E70 X5. Look great but eye-wateringly expensive.

I switched my 3 series away from runflats and into all seasons the last 2 years that I had it. I got tired of changing tires/wheels out every 6 months. I like the runflats though. They saved me a couple of times. So much so that I put them on my wife's minivan. Now with my X5M that 21" rim is in no mans land when it comes to tire/wheel choices. I was hoping to find a good all season but no chance so I guess I will be swapping them out this winter.

Great vid Edward! I've had both run flat and no runflats in the past. I'm running Pirelli P Zero staggered 19's on my X6 550i... not many choices in this size tire, but I do like the run flats for cornering and towing.

hi, thanks a lot for the video. one question: why didn´t you tried 22" config?

I been running staggered tires on an F15 that came with it from factory. I found the rear 315 tires to be wearing out much much faster than the front 275 tires. My next X5 will not have staggered tires. I have to say that the wide staggered tires gives my more stability at high speed cornering vs. my older X5 that had squared 19in tires, the F15 X5 feels a lot more confident and pinned to the ground.

That’s the opposite I got with my F15. The outside edge of my front tires would wear out first.

I like the look of a wider tire on the rear, I have a Volvo SUV but it’s AWD so all tires need to be the same, if I only had rear wheel drive than I would always have staggered simply because of the added stability and traction

Very informative video! I have a X5 square all around. I currently have Pirelli’s 255/50R 19. I’m looking to have the staggered look. I want to still keep the height the same or preferably higher! I work at a Port with construction so my run flats are a blessing. I’d want to stick with them. What do you recommend for the back & front keeping the same height but wider on the back?

I think the 275/315 20” OEM 496m rims would be best. You’ll gain less sidewall but easier to replace a tire when the time comes. Going with the 19” and trying to the keep staggered look with be challenging trying to find the right tires sizes.

Hey quick question let’s say I buy a 18x8 + 35 offset wheel and a 18x 8.5 + 35 offset wheel, will both wheels fit the same or will the wheel that’s an 8.5 will poke out a bit more compared to the one that’s a 8 width wheel?

Well, my 5 series has no room for a spare so I have to rock run-flats, it runs pretty smooth as far as I'm concerned.

I live in Denver where compact snow/ice is usually the problem and sometimes 6 inches or more of snow. I’m contemplating whether to buy a winter set of tires and rims (square) and summer performance tires (staggered) in the summer OR as you suggested, some A/S Continental DWS’ and replacing yearly?? Any thoughts my friend? Thanks!

If you don’t want to buy a second set of rims, the DWS is an excellent all season. However, if you have the storage space. The winter tires are 10x better than most great performing all seasons.

I’m running stock 2015 35i x5, but for some reason I’m only getting 15 mpg on comfort/eco pro average in the city and I’m not a heavy footer. Is it just my car, or is this common among the f15 35i ?

In response to your comment about X5s coming with Hankooks, the G05 X5 19” wheels came with the Hankooks standard.

The run flats do have a stiffer ride. However , they handle so much better in corners. When my wife calls me because the low tire light came on. She won't be sitting on the side of the road

The run flats has its benefits. I suppose if were my s/o driving the car, I’d consider buying them for the safety reasons

I just purchased the Nitto Motivo's for mine today, it had a set of Bridgestones on it when I got it. I drove straight home from the shop so I can't say if the ride quality is better or not. They tried to talk me into purchasing "Run flats" but I declined, not only because of the wide price difference but because I've heard you briefly talk about them in another video. I do pay attention to the little details and take them into consideration. Heck, after watching the vid on the puddle lights, I was online and had them delivered and installed in two days. 😂😂

Yeah, if you know how to plug a tire then you have more options except the run flats.

Very nice video!! Thank you mate!! I want to ask you a question: I have BMW X5M with 21 inch and I don’t have other option rather than the 325/30/r21 and 285/35/r21. My experience is 30% and 35% aspect ratio means thinner tires. A lot of users mention that after 5000-7000miles the tire become very stiff. It should be at least 40%45% aspect ratio on 21inch!! But such a thing doesn’t exist. The funny thing there is on 22inch and 20inch like 325 35r20!! On the 22 inch it will make speedometer not accurate but the 20 inch is recommended by bmw in the available options because I don’t want to go less than 325 and 285!! I heard changing runflat to non runflat the steering wheel become loose and soft!!! Can you clarify this? What your best advice to make the car feeling smoother and not feel every hole and road malfunction?

There was a thread I read about tire sized and aspect ratio on Bimmerpost. I’ll Have to see if I can find it. There are certain sizes you can get away with. Also when people go from run flats to non-run flats they are referring to the steering response. The run flats have a hard sidewall to support the vehicle in the event of a flat tire. The caveat is a stiff ride but more direct feel of the steering because there’s less flex. Non run flat sidewalls are softer but can cushion bumps more. The steering may feel less responsive due to the weight shifting on the sidewalls but it doesn’t affect the handling in a negative way. Btw The M model BMW’s don’t have run flats if that tells you anything about performance.

Hey man I’m thinking of getting 20 inch staggered rims for my ford falcon sedan. It’s a rear wheel drive so should work well but I’m just wondering how you can get the most out of your tyres if you can’t rotate them and if they’ll last as long as they would on a square set up? As for tyres I was going to go with michellin ps4 or ps4s but want to know your recommendations for 20 inch tyres as my car won’t be used on a track at all just a standard day to day car

With the Michelin’s you can rotate side to side since they’re not directional. If you’re looking for long life the pilot sport 4 would give you more mileage. If you do any spirited driving, I would strongly consider the 4S! Amazing street tire! As a Track tire, they do tend to get soft and greasy after a few laps. You can’t go wrong with either one!

I like the tire look on the Mercedes. I have a cls550 Benz, I’m currently running 255/35/20 all the way around but I don’t like the look , what do I need to do to get the look u have ?

You will need to get wider rims in the rear to accommodate the wider rear tire. Any staggered set of wheels should work. If you have 255 all around then I would do 265 or 275/30/20 in the rear and keep the front size the same.

Unsure if you mentioned it, but narrower tires are better in snow so if you need the extra grip, narrower is the way to go in winter especially in places like Canada. So you would recommend Continental or Michelin tires for summers and winters? Those DWS tires seem very interesting. Just in the process of buying a 2015 X5M and it will need new tires.

That’s true. Although I just watched a video recently by Tyre reviews and the narrow tires didn’t provide that much more benefit over the wider tire. Plus with the big brakes on the X5 you don’t have many options to downsize. The DWS tires were really good for me until half the life and I felt they struggled a little bit on my last Q7.

I am here tonight,last time we spoke i was asking you for help buying the 21inch rims,that's all been taken care of,the estimated delivery date is the 28th of September.Now i am here to find out what my options are when it comes to tires.I probably have to go with all season to avoid swapping when season change.

Got it all taken care of and happy with the end result! what do u think on a FWD a 225/45r18 on the front n a 225/45r19 on the rear? mainly just for looks. would it still drive fine?

How are you doing Edward? My X5M is currently running on 20 inch wheels and i am not feeling them at all.I'm trying to decide between 21s and 22s,what's your personal opinion on 22s? Also i'm looking at going with all weather tires instead of all season, you think that's a smart move? Thanks.

I think 21’s is a good fit. (285/325) 22’s, I worry about the shorter sidewall puts you more at tire/rim damage from potholes.

I would go for oem BMW style M469 20” with Front 275/40/20 Rear 315/35/20

Hey I have a 2005 Mercedes CLK500 and I'm thinking about changing my tires to all weather tires, so I checked the manufacturer's recommendation. It recommends staggered tires for the summer but the same tire size for the winter. I was wondering if I can keep on the all weather tire(same size for front and rear) all year long or if there is a downside to that

There isn’t a downside to running square setup up all year other than slightly less traction in the rear. The CLK500 is a powerful V8, but if you want to keep it simple, nothing will happen. The owner's manual suggests the same size for winter because going to a wider rear tire would cause the rears to not follow the tracks as the front, which inhibits some snow traction. Additionally, narrow tires work better in cutting through the snow.

I need your opinion. I have a 2017 X5 sdrive. Live in Florida. It’s actually cedar metallic like your m5 in video. Lol. However, I have a set of 20 asantis but the tires are 245/30/20. Would that look stupid?? Need your opinion ASAP

Hi. Based on what you told me. They would look ok from the side. But from behind or front they will look extremely skinny for the X5. It may even effect the handling because there isn’t much width. If you’re at a 20” and want to do a square setup I would do a 275/40/20 all around. If you’re looking for that wider stance then would find a wider rim. Like an 11” width for the rear and 10” for the front. Those are factory 20” sizes for the staggered setup. With offset being 40 front and 37 rear 275/40/20 and 315/35/20 respectively.

Hey watsup, if you use non run flat tires what tire PSI do I use. Or Do I still follow the tire PSI on the door panel even though it’s non run flat?

I would still follow the PSI door recommendation unless you are using different sizes than what’s printed on the panel.

do you find on your stagged tires that they wear in the inner part faster than the rest. I bought a Mercedes gle350 rwd with 275/45/21 front and 315/40/21 back. Boy did they wear fast at 7k miles on the inner part. Dealer said because they were staggered and are wheels are bowed out that the weight is on the center. Do I call BS or do you find that on your staggered wheels too.

My staggered rear tires tend to wear more on the inner size because of the negative camber. On the front tires of my X5, they wear the outer due for positive toe in. These settings are all for better handling and steering feel.

I just purchased a 650i xdrive and I am considering doing a staggered wheel setup. Any suggestions? Currently looking at both 20" and 21".

I think using OEM sizes would be my guess. Any variation could cause xdrive damage.

@@eddiemcars I forgot I posted this lol. It turns out that I have stick staggered 20's on the car. 245/35/20 front 275/30/20 rear. I put spacers on as well. 15mm up front and 20mm in the rear. Three weeks in no issues. 😊👍

Are your tires run flats? I have run flats on mine from the factory and I have the tire plan which I had to use. Cost me $50 when I had to get the tire replaced

No, I don’t have the run flats. I ran them on the 335i back in the day and it always a costed $350 per tire for replacing.

I have switched from factory run flats to non-run flats (MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4 Performance). Much quitter and softer ride, although lost the steering wheel stiffness at high speeds, i believe due to the fact that the non-run flats are ~10lb lighter each.

You can, I would also suggest this tiresize.com/calculator/ You can play with different tire sizes front and rear to make sure you stay within the 1% if you have xdrive

Btw, I’m in Florida so all we get is lots of rain!

Any summer or all season tires should be decent in the rain

Looks like you've got room for a small rear spacer if you want the car to look more sporty. I would do some research on that first. When my F85 needs shoes I plan to find a HIGHER profile set to soften the ride a bit since I tend to slow down before turns. May have to go to 30 inches if I can get away with it.

@@eddiemcars as long as the wheel stays flush or inside the fender flare it should look OK. Hopefully. I need to see if my Cayenne spacers will fit.

As always, great video. However, its way too easy to just say wider wheels give greater traction. There is this whole coefficient of traction, adhesion and tractive force that take into consideration power, weight, mass...etc. Sure, bigger tire, more contact surface, but also less PSI and more rotational force needed. You may end up sacrificing speed for traction. I'm sure all those dragsters, race cars, formula one, and BMW engineers, etc. have it carefully figured out. For a typical streetcar where gross weight changes and tires wear varies, staggered tires are really for aesthetics only. In simpler terms, why do some people put bags of sand in their trunks during winter? Because greater vertical force creates more traction in the snow. So if you want better traction cheap, load up the trunk. BTW, thats for the DWS indicators on all-seasons. Didnt know that. I keep a plug kit, pliers, and pump instead of using run-flats. A really bad day would be sidewall puncture or a gash where a plug wouldnt help.
