KTVA - Where The PROOF Is In The Singing

One of the most helpful things I learned about anxiety and stage freight is to not try to calm yourself down. When you try to calm yourself down you become more anxious in reality. The best thing is to be excited, happy, and looking forward to getting out and knocking it out of the park. If you miss a note or two keep rocking it and having fun. No body is perfect, besides when you have fun the audience does as well. Have fun with the crowd their there to have fun, their your friends.

I'm so glad you made this video! I went on the X Factor, but was so nervous during the 3rd audition with the thought that I could go on a live stage in front of 'professional' judges and thousands of people that I panicked and screwed up my audition. The producers gave me a 'no' and it hurt my self confidence ever since. But this video has made me feel so much better that I've started singing again for the 1st time in years. Thank you so much.

You are brave to talk about your experience. You are obviously super talented if you auditioned for the X Factor. You are no doubt way more talented than most people out there so don’t pay any mind to the haters. Keep sharing your gift with people and show them that you are a singing powerhouse. They will love your confidence and will respond accordingly. Just have fun with it. -Beth Blume 🌺
I'm an 18 year old girl and I love singing. I sing when nobody is home, or if there's just my younger sister. I have always wanted to sing in front of people, but when I stand in front of them, I just can't sing. My nerves levels are like 1250 out of 100. And it's super sad because I don't know if I can ever overcome this, I am just not that kind of confident bold personality. I want to sing in front of people so much, but I can't put myself out there. Maybe it's tied to the fact that when I was younger I lived in an environment that didn't support me and want me to succeed at all, instead they showed constant disapproval of me and it's hard to get over it, it's like it's written in me. I think those things can really be the result of early experiences.

I am exactly the same! I m lukcy that I have people who support me but until very recently I had never ‘properly’ sung in fornt of others before - maybe once at a sleepover. Even now the most people I have performed in front of with guitar was my mum, my friend and her mum. I would love to sing on stage but I just seem to freeze up and no sound comes out.

I am 66 years old and I have always struggled with stage fright since my teenage years. I also grew up in a family environment that was not supportive. I got some counseling and getting some more self-worth and that really helped me now I can sing in front of people and not be super anxious
I played for 30 years in road bands and never had stage fright...until I removed my guitar. I couldn't believe my guitar was my "woobie".

BoogyWoogyCreep I can definitely understand! I get so nervous by myself on stage, but give me a shawl to wear, or others there with me (a band or duet singer) and I become quite the confident singer/entertainer!
That is fabulous advice! I'm a clinical psychologist (and amateur singer!) and you really hit the mark on this :) You are an amazing teacher Ken.

Is There Really Such Thing As "Stress Free Singing"? I see many vocal coaches (and their students) promoting the idea that "there should be no stress while singing" and therefore frustrating the heck out of singers who think there is "something wrong with themselves" because they can't, over night, achieved this "stress free" singing. (this also gives a vocal coach "tribal knowledge" to keep you coming back to them as the only one who has the answer to this elusive concept) This is nonsense and here's why: Singing is like a sport. And with any sport, it's not the absence of stress, it's the management of stress that makes a great athlete. Think of it like this: When Lionel Messi is going to goal, do you think his body is "stressed?" (Anyone who says it isn't has never played a sport before). But Lionel has learned the art of training his body and mind for that moment when it's time for him to step on the gas, take on 3 players and score what "looks" like an "effortless goal." But you can be assured, it was not done "without effort" or without "stress." Lionel achieved this through training his technical abilities as well as building stamina and muscle memory to achieve this consistency. Now it is true that some styles of singing require less stamina than others and therefore can be accomplished with less strength training. In other words, singing a light pop song requires very little "strength" in the sound whereas singing a heavy rock song often requires incredible strength and stamina. This is also true for those (like myself) that want to push their "limits" and abilities to be all they can be. This of course requires more "effort" and technical training. With that said, there are many stages to building this "stamina" and it's ok to "find yourself" as one first starts with "damaging street singing" (with total stress) and going through the different stages of learning how to manage this stress away form the voice through correct training. If I didn't show the different stages of this process, and only showed "perfection", people would never learn that these people are all human, having to work on their craft just like yourself.

While I do understand what they mean as in singing should be fun not stressful or stress inducing it is normal I agree also to have a bit of stress but using it for fun helps and while I do not think something is wrong with me because I can't lose my stage fright overnight I do think your way of thinking helps too
I sing in 4 octaves. My hightest note (and I can belt it as well as use head voice) is a B5 comfortably. Yes I can hit the C6 and sometimes the C#6 but not all the time.
I play guitar and sing in a covers band... Stage fright... Two things that helped me with this... 1) Most people in the audience 'envy' you for being on stage... They would love to be there in your place! 2) Hitting a bum note, well, yeah I do from time to time... Maybe we ALL do from time to time... As long as you are singing with feeling that bum note becomes unimportant... Of course we want to play/sing to the best of our abilities... Hey, it's only rock n roll BUT I LOVE IT! Great videos man!

To at to 1) Many people are in deep admiration of you and want you to do well bcs 95% of the ppl there can’t sing, wish they could and want to see a good show.
First time I ever performed singing and playing acoustic was for friends and family, and turned my back to them, I was so nervous! Playing in a band a few years later, I realized that one gig is the most nervous and most comfortable event in my life at the same time. Nothing scarier than the start of a show, and nothing more relaxing and gratifying than nailing a song that the audience feeds off of.

Well said!
For anyone who has stage fright, read this and heed Kens words. Ken has helped me out with my public singing, particularly with overcoming stage fright, i've posted a couple of previous experiences in the comments section on some of kens videos detailing my struggle. But this time, i kicked a goal! My stage fright was a killer. I would have a few glasses of wine which took the edge off the nerves, but they were always there and unpredictable. My first public performance on a cruise was just embarrassing. I was fine at karaoke, just not singing on a big stage. My voice would be shaky and would lose power. It was horrible. Anyway, after a few more depressing performances i wasn't keen on my skills, nor the fact that i was relying too much on alcohol. But now here's where it really went crazy. I was invited to a party that was a month away, and the guy who organised it said "If anyone has any acts to do let us know". So without thinking i volunteered myself and a friend to do a duet. It was Perfect by Ed Sheeran and Andrea Bocelli. The thing was, it was a song i had never sang before. AND, my lines were in Italian..........I don't speak Italian....and it was opera!!! So i started to freak out, i considered cancelling, changing the song, chucking a sicky and using beta blockers to help out. Then i did a heap of reading and watched a few videos on stage fright including this one. I thought to myself, "alright, i'll give this a try" And here's what happened: As Ken said to do, i over prepared. Like you wouldn't believe! I downloaded a karaoke track and every day i practiced it over and over. When i was driving i would have the song on repeat and listen to how the artist was performing. The song was constantly in my head!! I memorized the lyrics IN ITALIAN!!! It was even in a couple of dreams!!! LoL. On the day of the party i met up with my co performer and we ran through it a couple of times. He was happy with it, and was keen to do it. However Not only had i NEVER sung in another language before, but i never sung with another person on stage before! First time for everything, but now i was starting to worry about letting my friend down if i sucked!! Then I remembered something Ken said to me on another comment, about replaying the movie in my head of when i had the crowd cheering me at karaoke. To visualize myself doing well, not stuffing up. So i started doing that, i wouldn't let myself think of any stuff ups, i kept visualizing myself singing well and the audience enjoying my singing. That i was there to entertain them, not save their lives. As per usual i had a little bit of wine to help out as well. I also remembered another thing i read, and that was to tell myself, "I'm not nervous, i'm excited!!", and i kept doing that! And the third thing i did, was, when i walked out on the stage, i looked straight at the audience, and gave them all a huge smile! I don't know how that exactly worked, but it just dissolved any excess nerves i had. I was still a bit nervous, but it was more of an energizing nervousness this time, instead of a crippling one. I had my galaxy tablet with the lyrics in front of me, and i could not have prepared any more than i had! While my friend was singing his part i had a few sips of a warm honey, lemon, ginger drink Andy Serkis calls Gollum juice, went up to the mic, and let fly. The moment i started singing, the audience started cheering, i tell ya, that just boosted my confidence like you wouldn't believe! I was supercharged! We ended up singing it without any problems! I'd have to say it was the first performance i was happy with!! I got some great feedback from the audience as well which was super encouraging!! Including from one person who asked if i had classical training!!!! This is coming from someone who needed to consume large amounts of wine to get up on stage in order do make me as numb as possible whilst still remaining coherent. Someone whose hands would shake so bad the audience would be thinking im using the microphone as a Maraca!! Stage fright sucks!! It's potentially crippling to a performer, and while you may never completely lose the butterflies in your stomach, if you follow Kens advice, and apply what helps other performers, you can train those butterflies to fly in formation!!! Thanks again Ken!

need to overcome singing loud when by myself first T_T
As I've grown, I've learned that the calmer you are and the less focused you are on hitting ever note, run, etc perfectly the more organic and natural sounding the performance will be. Meditation is extremely important as well. Creative people tend to have all types of things going through their minds right before they record, sing on stage, etc and the clearer the mind is, the more comfortable and less distracted you will be.
I heard that Elvis would do 30 takes on one song before he would feel if he got it right. That's EP Awesome video Ken

As a Christian, I offer my take on stage fright. First, thank you for your video. It points toward specific issues for me to work on. Second, many Christians need something from the Bible to actually execute their plans to get over things like stage fright. One Bible scripture many Christians use, me included, is one portion that talks about spiritual warfare, and I imagine myself putting on Bible times Roman army-type armor before fear hits. This is a quickie post to this KZread post, not a Bible study, so I will only touch on a few things of many. One is to imagine putting on combat shoes of peace. It is God's Will for me to be at peace. Looking at that right the opposite way, it is not God's Will for me to have dysfunctional fear. I imagine myself picking up and using another piece of armor: the sword. Imagine using a combat dagger, striking quickly and decisively when fear hits, using a specific scripture that helps me to combat that fear at that time. I hope this helps someone.

I needed to read this! I’m a great singer-within myself and everyone else, but I just started singing in this new church. I love God and know my gift is from Him, but my first time singing a solo in this church was horrible-to me. So many thoughts were running through my mind and I failed-according to my expectations. Many members came to me afterwards saying how blessed they were-I was shocked. Moral of the story, God got the Glory even through my internal issues. Thanks for your Biblical response.💜
I don't have 'stage' fright but I find it very difficult to sing in front of people even though I love to sing when I'm alone. At one point in my life I had developed the confidence to sing in front of other people, but then I overheard someone in another room saying something about my singing. The stupid thing is, I don't know what they said, whether it was positive, negative or indifferent but my *brain* assumed that it was negative and I lost the confidence I had. Between then and now I have occasionally had compliments about my singing if people heard it- my girlfriend always tells me how much she *loves* my singing and wishes I would do it more but I still wouldn't do it- I'd already formed a fear of singing and my brain wouldn't attribute any weight to the positive comments I *know* I have received because of the one possibly negative comment I *think* I got. It's ridiculous! Anyway, thanks to you Ken I am starting to break out of that fear- I feel more confident that I know what I am doing after I watch your videos and apply what you talk about. Your clear love of singing is infectious and shows me how much fun I could be having. And I am gradually re-building my confidence through exposure by practicing my singing with my girlfriend in the room, so I am getting more comfortable with my voice again and she is happy too!
If we understand that we are called to sing not because we must show how great we are,but how great Christ is, we'll never be afraid to sing :-) Just start to fear God and feel His love to you and you will never fear people :-) He made us to worship Him,not only with singing ,but with all things we do in our life:-)

This is very helpful .. thank u very much .. I got 6 days to go I’ll be back singing on stage again .. I’ve been a band vocalist since I was 14 then I stoped for 10 years 😬 now I’m back & I felt nervous … this is very helpful!! Thank uuuuuuuuu
As you said, repetition is key and knowing the people that come to watch you are there because they support you... (alright, sometimes they have choice and they just have to sit through the thing) I love to sing (k.. notice I wrote I LIKE, not that I'm a great singer) and I can just give myself to singing fully when all alone. It's a place where I would feel free. My stage fright was so bad that when I would sing somewhere in closed quarters and someone would stand outside at the door, I would feel it and I would right then stop singing. Imagine a person like that singing for an audience. :-) Well, now I do. Still I will not say that I'm a great singer, but when people hear me sing they will really encourage me to sing or do something with that gift. So, sometimes I will sing in church. First time I really messed up but people encourage me to keep going, so I figured they kinda liked it or at least they don't mind, so I started to sing a little more often. I know for sure I've improved, but I still get nervous when singing and I can't hit the high notes all the time when in front of people, but I keep practicing. I'ld say, don't give up. Don't just do it for the people, don't try to show how good you are, but rather enjoy your God given gift and try to share. :-)
Great point Ken!! Everybody in the audience wants you to sing and play the best performance you've ever done. They are ready to applaud you on to greater heights!!
perfect explanation! I used to be afraid on stage, but with the passage of time and trust, this can be repaired. The public wants to see someone singing, not to see someone afraid, very good lesson ken!
preparation is everything to finding that sometimes elusive "comfort zone" in pretty much anything, greta advice Ken!!!
That's very cool! Slow songs usually enjoy energy (fun) through the passion of the performance. To make it "fun" sometimes can make it "not serious" which may diminish the authority of the song and performance. I find it "fun" when I have nailed it and make people cry (ha ha)
My course covers raising range for low voices.
Thanks man
when I was in 7th grade I had a solo at school. I forgot all the words and ran off and threw up back stage. true story. I've never recovered from the shame. your perspective reasons just showed me no one probably remembers anymore. they just laughed for a while. my horror was comedic relief. in highschool I was in an ensemble group of me and 4 other people and halfway thru the song I fainted. my knees were locked. I went pale and knocked everyone over. I'm a hot mess lol thanks for the video man you're so cool and chill. your videos really help!
thanks!
...I only get nervous when I perform infront of very close loved ones... it's very, very counter productive as I am aware it is more meaningful to feel freer around loved ones than strangers or 'a crowd'

Nasea, instant headache, throat closing, i want to faint, which is weird because I do fitness competitions and love being center stage all by myself. I thought I over prepared for this week, but it looks like I need more, I'm a personal trainer so all of my clients volunteer to let me sing in front of them that's singing the same song about 12 times a day to new people..lets soo if this works by Friday karaoke night! :D Thanks for the video

More Than Muscle .With Michelle McDaniel Michelle, I want you to try something. I want you to focus on silly songs that are non threatening.(like happy birthday, Disney's "Let It Go" or maybe other "fun" silly non threatening non serious singing songs. Do this with regularity and then migrate to other songs like Take It Easy by the eagles. Again. silly cam fire-ish songs that were not meant to be taken seriously. Fat bottom girls or whatever you have done in the past you didm;t take seriously. Do this for a while and then in the midst of it, add in a song in the middle of the pack that is a bit more serious. You will find that once you are "in the groove" of doing this, and the more you do it, the nerves will start to disappear. In fact they would probably go away if you did Karaoke every day, but that is not practical. This is one things that will help you (as silly as it may sound ha ha).

This was really helpful to me as I was suffering with the anxiety and sickyness especially when going for gigs. I think it's partly due to also knowing you're not the best, but if it's a passion from the heart you do it not to get boo'd off but to express and create. It's good to know it genuinely is anxiety. I have got over it quite well now, not pushing beyond a foundation and following the laws of singing.
@kentamplin your youtube videos are so helpful!!! i have improved on my singing sooo much since I started watching them. I used to love singing in highschool. I'm 42 now and don't sing anymore because in my 20's I was just randomly singing a song with the radio and someone said I was tone deaf. So I quit singing and practicing after that. Now I feel like whenever I try singing again there's a hesitancy in my notes where they break apart. I think it's because I'm scared. I would love to be able to just belt out a song one day even if it's just by myself.

I am so glad you suggested going to karaoke to get used to singing in front of other people. So many 'professional' singers look down on karaoke as playing at singing. My own level of confidence has greatly improved because of recording myself singing (I never heard my own voice until I was 50) and doing karaoke.
Hi Ken, thanks for this video! I take singing lessons, but for no reason, my fear of singing has doubled during the past month, and I got completely frustrated because of it. great vid! also another thing about building confidence is to look at it like a skill. We aren't confident about playing tennis against a pro, but we'd be confident about hitting a ball against a wall. if you're unconfident, step it down a level to a level you're comfortable with. when that becomes easy we step it up to the next level. perform in front of a few friends who you're comfortable with first before taking it to the clubs if you aren't feeling good. thanks for the vid Ken!

My pleasure!
awesome video. I've been studying singing with a vocal coach since 2010 and drums since 2009, and I have 4 live shows coming up on december, I'm really anxious :P this actually helped me. I will push myself to the limit and give my very best.
Thanks sir ken
Great video. I had some major stage fright. Haha. I remember being afraid to even do skits in classes. I wanted to become a musician later on in life and my first live performance was in front of my entire high school in our gym. Before going on I was nervous to the point of shivering. Haha. I wasn't singing like I do now, but I was the lead guitarist. When we went on, all that fear kinda just went away, and I thought "Hey, this is awesome!"
I agree idol!! 100 prcent.of wht you r explaining about ds topic.

You are good,,,,,You are very good.
Genius.
I just got my first microphone for Christmas and singing in front of family terrified me to death, but I did it anyway and the experience was great and I don’t have near as much stage fright anymore, I’m so glad I did it

Awesome, Aaron! Congrats!
hey Ken just wanted to let you know that this helped me a lot. I've got my first big performance in a competition and I'm freaking out but this video gave me some courage!! also i wanna know how do I make a slow song sound fun on stage?? its nice to see you actually reply to your viewers:)
Excellent Video! Thanks for sharing This Video! I was a scared crow and all my friends used to tease me like anything. I was feeling low confident and low self-esteem. My brother introduced me to this "no fear" mobile app by lokesh , which made me manage my fears in a very methodical way and now because of this my fears are reducing one by one. I am much more confident and people are amazed at me!
Im the opposite. No stage fright but thats probs cause I've played instruments in more than one band I focus sooo much on setting up right, SMH its like lets go go go go got another gig to go to. Still I appreciate you for how dedicated and considerate you've been. Im so grateful I found you.

I know for me, I've always been super self-conscious of my voice since I was a kid. Despite taking chorus classes for two years when I was in high school, I pushed myself in the background a lot because I was afraid of finding out I have a terrible voice and pretty much making a fool of myself in front of my peers. I think another thing that drove me to stopping was hearing a recording of myself jamming to something on one of my playlists, and just how...bad it was. To me, it's sort of like learning why you shouldn't touch a hot stove, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to overcome those feelings.

Good to hear 74galya!
Good lesson! Re: forgetting lyrics, I saw Steven Tyler interviewed, who said yes he forgets but has monitor s on stage with the words if needed. He also said that it made him really nervous when women took off their shirts and he couldn't remember his own name! Maybe joking?
what I have said in this video as well as the info on this Fear page on my web site will help you KenTamplinVocalAcademy(dot)com
Why am i scared to sing to a few people in the room, and i feel myself comfortably on the stage?
when the emergancy vehicles passed by at first i thought it was by me and then i thought they were bombs for NO reason o.O and i liked this video ^-^ valuable information!
hi Ken! thank you for this video. it really help me. the problem with me is that I don't like my voice. and when I am on stage, I am afraid of missing the pitch. I make many efforts to be relax. when I hear great singers singing on stage, I ask myself how do they do to be relax like this
I'm terrified of singing in front of people. I occasionally have heart palpitations it's so bad. A few people have told me I can sing, (there are a couple of times I've actually been able to sing in front of others) but I'm still unsure of my abilities. I have experience playing the flute (if that helps at all) but have never had a singing lesson.
Hello from Germany (I'm not Heinz ). I don't want to show up here, but after i was reviewed on Metal Hammer, Rock Hard and the most of our main Metal magazines as one of the best vocalist in the country, i still be afraid to go on stage without drinking. So i wanna Thank you for this Video that makes me feel much more comfortable to do my job. Andy

That's cool Andy. I have some other things that can really help you as well. If you need to reach me you can at ktvahelp@gmail.com
I always forget the lyrics, which sucks since my name is lyric.... I definitely have stage fright but only with another musician. I do fine when I'm singing Karaoke. I can even sing songs I've never tried and nail them if I am looking at the screen doing karaoke. I love your style and would love to take this course... I'm gonna start saving up to do skype lessons....
If I have practiced, and have learned all the lyrics, and adlibs, then I am not nervous. It is only when I have not been given ample time to study the song, or get put on the spot; that I feel saliva welling up in my throat. Also I feel like I do better on the songs that I can relate too verses the songs that I am just not feeling.
