Sing Without Tension - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Singing is a sport and the voice should be treated as such.
Tension starts by "forcing" or "overusing" various muscle groups that start a cascading affect of "binding up" muscle.
Many coaches on the internet advocate there should be "no tension."
With any kind of resistance training you will always have a degree of the sensation of resistance. The goal is to strength train correctly so that you can manage away stress/tension. I see many vocal coaches (and their students) promoting the idea that "there should be no stress while singing" and therefore frustrating the heck out of singers who think there is "something wrong with themselves" because they can't, overnight, achieve this "stress free" singing. (this also gives a vocal coach "tribal knowledge" to keep you coming back to them as the only one who has the answer to this elusive concept) This is nonsense and here's why: Singing is like a sport. And with any sport, it's not the absence of stress, it's the management of stress that makes a great athlete. Think of it like this: When Lionel Messi is going to goal, do you think his body is "stressed?" (Anyone who says it isn't has never played a sport before). But Lionel has learned the art of training his body and mind for that moment when it's time for him to step on the gas, take on 3 players and score what "looks" like an "effortless goal." But you can be assured, it was not done "without effort" or without "stress." Lionel achieved this through training his technical abilities as well as building stamina and muscle memory to achieve this consistency. Now it is true that some styles of singing require less stamina than others and therefore can be accomplished with less strength training. In other words, singing a light pop song requires very little "strength" in the sound whereas singing a heavy rock song often requires incredible strength and stamina. This is also true for those (like myself) that want to push their "limits" and abilities to be all they can be. This of course requires more "effort" and technical training. With that said, there are many stages to building this "stamina" and it's ok to "find yourself" as one first starts with "damaging street singing" (with total stress) and going through the different stages of learning how to manage this stress away from the voice through correct training. If I didn't show the different stages of this process, and only showed "perfection", people would never learn that these people are all human, having to work on their craft just like yourself.

I could not breathe, I had headaches, sore throat, my eyes were watery so i could not see much but God healed me completely on this very same day! I am serving a living God indeed! If you have not already given your life to Christ do so now by saying, Lord God, I come to repent from my sins (be sincere) please take me Lord I give my life to you! Thank God!!!! May the Lord God be with us all in the mighty name of Jesus Amen! and may God keep us all to live for over 100 years with long life, good health, and prosperity to glorify His name in the mighty name of Jesus Amen! Indeed God is great! Remember we are not alone and God is with us! For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord plans to prosper you not to harm you plans to give you hope and a future Jeremiah 29:11 and as we should all remember John 3:16 For God so love the world that He gave His only begotten so that whosoever believe in Him shall not perish but shall have everlasting life and Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me He is God of the hills and valleys and WE ARE NOT ARE NOT ALONE

Here is a tutorial on an important topic for singers. Can we really sing without tension, or instead do we really need to learn how to MANAGE that tension and put healthy tension to work for us, like the healthy tension that we use to walk or talk with? Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Hey, Mr. Tamplin, have you ever heard of a Japanese artist named Yasushi Ishii? If you have, can you do a video where you explain how he sings? If not, he's a music artist in anime that specializes in jazz, hard rock, experimental, and classical. I need to know how exactly he sing for a 'specific' reason. I'm not going to copy his singing or anything, just to let you know. Also, I think you two sing similarly and you would sound great singing some of his songs like "Death Dance", "Soul Rescuer", "Yugure", "Hatred Guy of Sinfulness", "Sky Walker", and "When Going to a War, use a Bow."

Pls. React to Katrina Velarde somewhere over the rainbow. Is she using her abdominal strength there? Im confused! ?!?
Just observing that Ken is a good example of true self confidence, he can say with a smile that what he do is awesome, and unlike vanity it still feel humble because it rely on a fondation of profound truth. Vanity is a mechanism to hide that deep inside the person thinks differently than what he is showing and even telling himself. So, that’s why I really trust him, and I want this self confidence to with my singing. He can transmit it because he have it for real.
I have always admire those with musical talent, vocal skills in particular, but never pursued learning for myself. Now, I am devoting myself to vocal training and have found it is way harder than I ever thought it to be. It only makes me appreciate talented vocalist that much more. Thank you for offering your knowledge so generously to those of us seeking to improve! Much appreciated.

I've been singing since 1986 and I still come back to you for vocal instruction. Thank you, Ken, for showing all of us that vocals can be practiced just like any instrument. Fine-tuning the "voice" can be accomplished just like fine-tuning an instrument. Bravo!!!
I used to be a rock and a metal singer in the past. I went through many stages of experimenting with my voice, from overshouting and destroing my voice to singing way too overprotectively. I'm not a band singer anymore but I still love singing and I must confess I have struggled with finding my way how to do it for many years. Sometimes I couldn't hit a note, sometimes my throat went sore while I was singing just for my own pleasure and for myself. After I watched a few of your free videos Mr. Tamplin, something clicked. I'm not the best singer in the world, I'm not even on semi-pro level I think, but it's great and surprising to me that I can now do better than anytime in the past. I mean, now I'm able to sing in the way that matches my best moments in the career but without all of the effort I've always had to put into hitting the right note without losing my voice at the same time. I'm 40 y.o. now and thanks to you I've suddenly found THE way. Now, I can effortlesly sing songs I wrote when I was 20 y.o. as well as some other songs that were hard to sing for me in the past. I mean, probably I'm not much better than I was 20 years ago, but now it costs me nothing to sing the songs that I always considered very hard to sing and voice-destroying. Thank you for all of that Mr. Tamplin! You're amazing voice coach! And please, forgive me my English, it's not my mother tongue.

Haven’t regretted subscribing to your email yet. Ken Tamplin- thank you from the bottom of my heart for being my music coach. I’ve graduated high school a while ago, and so sadly no longer am able to have those free lessons from a choir teacher. 😓 But you made it all better! I really dig the interactive parts of the videos too. I could SERIOUSLY feel the difference with the yawning thing.
💜💜💜 Hi Mr. Tamplin I Need to say to you in this moment, that you have inspired me ,, in sooo many ways. And Learning from you over time with your teachings, have reached something Within Me. I Truly Thank You For You! 💜💜💜
Thanks Ken. I’m sold.
Ohhh I love the way he explain everything like so clear. I’ll practice all this for sure. Thank you 🙏

Wow, thank you!
Ken you remind me of an old friend of mine who was the perfect guitar teacher for me. He just seemed to teach in a way I understood right away. Just like you. Not only are you an amazing singer but you're an amazing teacher and easy to understand. Thanks again! You're really helping my singing come along

I appreciate that! Thank you!
I have seen tons of vids on youtube but your vids and exercises are really comfortable and feels good actually , you are the best vocal coach out there !
You're an excellent teacher. I'm a life-long guitarist just now learning how to sing! I've notice if I eat a small cup full of fresh ginger ( take about 20 minutes to consume it), my stomach feels relaxed afterwards, this is 'only' with ginger. They say the stomach is the second brain, that's why stress goes to our gut. So, try the ginger thing one day. Thx Ken.

Ginger works esp for throat straightening
Finally a singing lesson on KZread. That doesnt involve chewing on an aluminum can or tying a belt around your jaw. Among other absurd exercises. That would seem closer to how a dog plays with a toy. Than how a person would improve their singing. Lol Thanks Ken. Im no singer or even a karaoke guy. But its still nice to hear info that seems real or is applicable.
Thank you you’re so wonderful. A true gift. I’m starting to think after a long time not singing maybe there is hope and it’s not too late for me. I will watch all your videos and see what progress I can make to build up my voice. It’s sad to go silent when singing and songwriting have been such important part of my life. I started a listening room for songwriters to play only their original music called Café Artiste at the Jersey Shore Arts Center I livestream performances and post on our Facebook page. I’d love to have you do a seminar on the voice. Looking forward to this journey step by step 🎶🙏🏻
Too practical, Ken.. In ya face details.. The next century will have kids sing better than our time because of masters like you..

Glad I'm learning this now instead of later.
I've played in bands for probably close to 30 years. Always done backing vocals and was main vocal in one band. My head would throb so bad during some songs I didn't think I'd be able to finish the song!!!! I always know what I hoped to sound like, but could never reach that goal....I still can't!!!! I learned more in this one single video than I have my whole musical life!!! I have been watching these videos for long time today!!!!!!! THANKYOU for these great lessons, I have a show this weekend so I will see if I can remember the breathing techniques!!! Bravo man, you're awesome!

Thanks Ornulfr!
I tried a singing coach once. She had me singing "Elton John: Your Song" for 3 weeks. I gave up. I practiced with what she was trying to teach, but maybe having me learn a song I like would have been better. She refused to change the song to something good so I quit. Maybe my fault, but I need to have fun when learning. During one class she had her 3 year old in the room. That wasn't distracting at all lol........Anyway I have fun watching your videos. One 11 minute video is better than the 3 hours I spent with her.

Hey Ken. I just want to add what you're doing is absolutely wonderful. You're out here really trying to help people and you don't have to do this for free, but you do. You're an inspiration to someone like me who gave up singing and just stuck to playing guitar. I'm not saying I'll have a career or anything now, but maybe through your videos I'll have some more confidence. Thank you Sir.
This video really impressed me I have been looking for years to figure out how to stop tension thank you your a genius and a life saviour
Your beliefs about spending true time to get great at anything is fact, as it's with time spent focused on the correct ways of doing something that we automate these ways and open our focus to new improvements. Awesome lesson, thanks!
You stating that you don't like to learn things you have to relearn later reminded me of a statement that Buddy Ebsen made regarding Shirley Temple as a child actress. Buddy Ebsen speaking of Shirley Temple when they did a movie together with a dance scene in it. She arrived for rehearsal and he was working on the choreography. He had the dance done and mentioned to her that he was thinking of making changes. Her response was: "OK, let me know when your done." and then she turned and walked away. Buddy Ebsen said he wanted to spank her for that, but, she was right. There is no point in learning dance moves that you will later have to unlearn. Despite her age, Shirley Temple was a professional.

I really love coming back to this to solidify the fundamentals in relaxation. I recently learned that the brain will quite literally disable strength of the body, if the spine is not supported. The part about not tipping the spine is really really important, thank you for the video!
