How To Breathe For Singing | Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
In all my years of singing and teaching there are many concepts that are very elusive.
Much of the information I paid dearly for was either incomplete, flat out wrong, or confusing at best.
Often times it was information that was just parroted by vocal coaches from some textbook or some other coach they had learned from without proving it out themselves with their own voices.
Understanding breath control for singing is certainly one of those uncompromising building block techniques that cannot be missed or the whole house comes crashing down.
One coach told me "take in big hits of air in the lung," while another coach told me, "you shouldn't mount too much pressure in the lung."
Yet another coach told me, "use more air" while yet another said: "feel like you are pushing your back muscles fanning out towards your tailbone."
This list goes on and on (and this is only for breathing, not to mention all the other essential components for singing).
In this video, I give a brief tutorial on what it takes to breathe correctly when singing.
I hope you find this video informative on your singing journey. :-)

This is one of the reasons it is so important for singers who move around a lot on stage to be in good physical condition. It's hard to breathe properly when you're winded.

I went to med school, but after 2 years decided that I didn't want to practice medicine. So I left to work as a pharmaceutical scientist. The reason I told you this is that intercostal muscles aren't in the lungs. They are the muscles between the ribs. But they are very important in allowing the lungs to expand when we breathe. So you are right; they are critical to singing!

i figured out with the help of a coach that as soon as you pushed out all the air on a note you relax the stomach and its filling almost automaticly. after concentrating to relax the shoulders and breath below the stomach. its what you teach, so im glad to have a good coach actually showing it. thanks for all the confirmation and for sharing your knowledge

Excellent tutorial Mr. Tamplin. As someone who has been practicing SOME kind of sports and performing in front of some of my friends (God bless them) I could say that your insights are spot on. The concept of " totally relaxed" singing or "totally relaxed" playing is utterly useless when it comes to actual performing an athletic feat or singing on stage. I practiced boxing for some times and I used to be scolded by my coaches as being "too relaxed" and allowed my opponent, who manage the stress in their body to incredible speed and explosiveness, to do whatever the heck they want to do to me before I even realized what just happened. Same with performing with the live bands as the entire band literally had to told me to "put some weight" into my singing cause they can't hear me as I was "relaxing" on stage.

Smile....in my twenties i was singer in a thrash metal band and taught myself how to belt & roar healthy and still be able to switch into soft notes seamlessly. But the muscle power you need for that is absurd. Made fun to real strong guys asking them to punch me real hard in my tummy if I than can hit them back. Me was pretty slim and not very impressive to these guys. So they smiled, crunched their fist, I crunched my belting muscles, they felt like hitting concrete, shook their fists....and than it was my turn. Man.....it might been a bit unfair, but how those pumped up dummies went to their knees....wonderful.

Thank you so much for this Ken... You have no idea how many times I've tried to explain this on the forum (Insert: "Man crying out in the wilderness" here LOL) … actually, I recant that, as I'm sure you of all people more than understand that :-) I usually use the analogy of the bagpipes, with your diaphragm being the air bladder. You maintain a nice constant pressure and you get predictable output... and to hit those crazy high notes, you have to increase the pressure a bit on the bagpipe bladder, "in a controlled manner"... and back off to the normal constant when you done. Still its nice to get that clear confirmation, as sometimes we can get to doubting ourselves and questioning our foundations.

Ken, watching you is like talking to an old friend!! I would say that I taught myself how to sing. I sang to myself ever since I could remember, it's like I had a voice inside of my head that I heard and strived to sound like and I practiced until I sounded just like it. Fortunately, my parents put me in every opportunity to sing growing up, and I had many great mentors along the way. In my twenties I was really shy about my talent and too afraid to shine, I continued to practice in private with my music mentors that became great friends and networked with the best local talent. Now that I'm in my early thirties, I'm working on getting myself out there more because there is truly nothing in this world I love more than singing. I was born for it. Watching your videos reminds me of all the things I already know, or instinctually know and don't know how to express. One of my best friends and greatest encouragers died last year, not only do I miss my great friend but I miss having him around for his broad music experience and expertise. I've never really had a 1-on-1 vocal coach and I hope one day I could go through your program. Until then I come to your videos for reminders and I love watching your other students progress. Thank you for all the wonderful information

I was trained in two school choirs growing up and have been singing for most of my life.. However - I think I just kinda stopped breathing in this way or forgot how beneficial it is TO breath like this when singing. So, these days, when I sing - my stomach inflates when I breath in and deflates when I breath out... But now I remember you're supposed to do the opposite when singing lol. I can sing about 2 octaves above middle C but they sound kinda soft and I guess it's because I was lacking that power.. Breathing like this really strengthens ones power.

Your introduction was perfect! You have nailed it! Indeed, most of the singing coaches that we have been watching here on KZread speak too much about this theme. They open their videos saying that they will teach you how to do, they say "do this, you have to do that"...so and on...The video finishes and you just look and say: where the hell is the explanation and really demonstration of the diafragmatic support? It just happened to me before coming here. Thanks for trying to help us. I do need to go deeper in it.

A good summation of several past videos Ken.I like going back and reading my comments.Lets me know what I NEED to brush up on. When your young , ya take for granted that air will always be there when ya need it, even with poor vocal breathing technique. Get alittle age on ya, high BP and poor circ, and MAN! 3-4 tunes in E will have ya seein stars..LOL. Thanks for this video! I needed it to remind me to return to the very techniques that got me this far!

I’m here because I have digestive problems for 13 years. Just found out I have a sliding hiatal hernia. Have been told by a few doctors I need to learn to diaphragm breath to Aleve symptoms. One dr. Told me to learn to sing. I can’t hold a note but if this helps my digestion acid reflux posture etc. Then this should be fun remedy.

Thinking about a bag piper as he pushes air into the bag to produce the sound for the pipes. I learned to use diaphragmatic breathing as a long distance runner which proves to be very beneficial. It just comes natural now.

    Yeah, I was waiting for this! I have a difficulty with this, I was usually taking too much air and that wasn't necessarily cause it created unnecessary tension to my throat and neck! Greetings from Roumania! 🤗 Edit: I love your messi analogy 😄;

Master Ken I just wanted to say thank you for your videos. Honestly I didn't quite get my head around this concept of "diaphragmatic support". This video here helped me big time.. I know I'm doing something right when I can sing for hours without feeling fatigued or without my throat feeling hoarse afterwards. I've never even had a vibrato before, but all of a suddenly it is there. Big thumbs up man 👍👍

Dear Ken: I greet you from Mexico and I take this opportunity to thank you for your excellent advice provided through the videos on this channel. I would really like to take some classes with you, especially to resolve doubts about breathing, since I have seen countless videos from different coaches and some instruct to keep pressure outward, others that you have to press inward, in short, they change the "techniques." ". The only drawback is that I don't speak English and I don't know if that would be a problem for online classes. I will greatly appreciate your kind response. May you be very well. Peace!
