SSgt Barry Sadler Interview 1966 (Sings his Hit "Ballad of the Green Berets")

Sgt Barry Sadler Ballad of the Green Berets Live Perfomance
Barry Allen Sadler (November 1, 1940 - November 5, 1989) was an American soldier, singer/songwriter, and author. Sadler served as a Green Beret medic, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in the Vietnam War from late December 1964 to late May 1965. Most of his work has a military theme, and he is best known for his patriotic "Ballad of the Green Berets," a #1 hit in 1966.

Sgt Barry Sadler Ballad of the Green Berets Lyrics
Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Trained to live off nature's land
Trained in combat hand to hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage take from the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her his last request
Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret

My brother was not a Green Beret (a group that I admire), but he gave his life in Vietnam November 4, 1966. His name was Howard Leslie Walker and he was a year older than I was. We still miss him and think of him every day, as I'm sure that other families still mourn the loss of their loved ones in this war and EVERY war.

My great grandfather was in WWI, my grandfathers(both) were in WWII, and my dad.. who at 75 is my BEST friend and hero was in Vietnam from 69-71.. The others come home to a hero's welcome.. whereas my dad, who as a door gunner and the crew chief survived over 10 shot down hueys, saw ALOT.. (he doesn't talk about it) was looked DOWN on and he was doing exactly like the grandfather's were doing- following orders. Pisses me off. Those pieces of crap should have aimed all of their protesting at Washington.. not people like my father.. a kid. He stayed in the Army full time for over 20 years and retired , got into law enforcement.. was a cop part time and worked full time for the Ga State Board of Pardons & Parole.. which he needed a bachelor's degree to get that job.. The US Army put him through college . Before he was drafted he was on the path of being a diesel mechanic/stock car engine builder like his father.. His retirement check from the Army is SUBSTANTIAL.. HE IS A REAL MAN .. YEARS ago he told me "I paid the hippies no attention.. If they were being shot at they'd shoot back too. It wasn't about apple pie or baseball.. it was all about protecting the guy next to me.. they can go to hell.." He will not watch war movies at all. I KNOW I'm straying.. but I take every opportunity to talk about him.. He is EXTREMELY HUMBLE .. and when someone says something to him about "war hero" he gets red faced and says "the heros are the ones that didn't come back.. the ones that died so I could... '' He is the smartest and best man I have ever known.. So the hippies can SUCK IT. GOD BLESS ALL THE FALLEN ONES.. WE BITCH , PISS AND MOAN.. and all those fallen were fighting for our rights to PISS and moan. God Bless THE HEROS AND THEIR FAMILIES THAT have to experience the pain of losing their loved ones. God Bless America...It isn't perfect BUT I CAN TYPE THAT WITHOUT BEING ARRESTED! 🙏🤦🏿‍♂️

First time I heard this song I was a kid ~ 7yo but it hit me hard. My family were very patriotic but the number of kids dying in & for Vietnam was causing doubts within. The war lacked an end game and became something that tore our country in half. Returning soldiers being treated as if they were enemy combatants rather than the poor victims they actually were. I felt confused bc this song was so inspiring but my family was getting split into 2 parts. Very confusing times for our country that resulted in many many people behaving very badly. Thank you very much for producing a great song and condolences to the untold thousands of families who lost love ones to this "police action".

My late mother had a cousin in the green beret. He died during training. This was during the Korean War. My father served as an army Ranger in world war 2. So yeah this song means alot to me. I heard about it. But it was before time. I was born in 1963. But being an army brat. I heard about it. Thank you for posting this.

My late husband earned a green beret. Their official name is "US Army Special Forces." This song describes my husband so well. He was one of the two best men I ever met.

I was in Viet Nam 1966-1967 and one of our assignments as a Combat Engineer Unit, the 18th Engineer Bigrade, 299th Combat Engineer Battalion Company Bravo. We went on a mission with the 5th Special Forces A Team, they were in Doc-To and the Montagnards that was just behind our unit on the hill, my unit built an underground hospital and a 4' moot all the way around the hospital. We were there for 69 day and the Chief of the Montagnards village invited the Senior NCO's and Officers to the village to meet the tribesmen of the village. There were a couple of things I tasted and some I couldn't handle, if I don't know what it is I don't eat it.The tribes people made us rice wine that had a cheater stick on the top of the container, you had to sip through the bamboo straw until it cleared the top of the liquid. They were good and caring people, a little afraid of us and stand offish when they knew we were good friendly people they loosened up. When SSG Sadler mentioned that they ate rats I saw that happen in person, the village people lined up waiting for us to leave. I thought that was nice of them, they were waiting for the rats to come out of the bunkers we slept in, the rats had dug holes in the sides of our bunker, when we pulled stake to leave the rats head for the woods, the village people ran them down grabbed them by the tail, snapped their necks and put them on a fire, then they beat the rats with a bigger bamboo stick to loosen the skin from the meat then eat them. I'm sorry this is so long, just wanted to share what I had seen with my own eyes.
