In 1958, a Minneapolis based Catholic youth magazine, "Contacts", launches a campaign for "clean lyrics in pop songs." Songs they target include Presley's "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" because it promotes going steady.

As if people didn't go steady at the time. I think it was normal for girls at the time to wear their boyfriends ring around their neck. Our parent's generation didn't like Elvis because of the way he moved his hips. I was a toddler when this song came out.

I've only just listened to this song. Kinda nice, quite typical of many Elvis songs. I do wear my wedding ring around my neck, safer than around my finger. Two billion Catholics around the world with weird ideas of what's right or wrong, often trying to make their preferences doctrinal. Still happy to be Catholic, but, avoid such thinking.

I wore a ring around my neck starting when I was 15. I dated and married that man. I did not have to get married. I married him at seventeen and we were married 59 yrs before he passed two years ago. We lived a simple but nice life. We had a son who takes care of me now. I miss him so much. He’s with the Lord now. No more pain.

This is absolutely nuts. I remember when i was in high school, a lot of girls wore a ring on a chain around their neck. All it meant was that they liked each other and were going steady. It didn't mean anything about pre marital sex. Besides they could do that ring or no ring. People just like to gripe about stupid stuff. I guess they have nothing better to do. 🙄

Why do people take a simple and innocent song and try to make it dirty? At that time teenage couples that were "going steady" that is, not dating others, the girl would either wear their boyfriend's ring on her finger or on a chain around her neck, hence the song's name. Very innocent!

I am 71 yrs old now and still have that worn out 45. It brings me very good memories. There is nothing dirty, evil or decadent about this song. in the mid 50s and early 60s high school boys would give their class ring to their girl friend. It was almost always to big for the girls finger so she would wear it on a chain around her neck. I knew a USMC Korean War Veteran (courageous Man) that pastored a mountain church in Oregon. He wore his girl's ring with his Dog Tags when he went ashore. He came back, married that young woman, raised his family, and was my Pastor in High School. A very fruitful life! If anything counted in life, that ring did.

I was around eight years old when this song was released. I didn't listen to radio much in those days, except when my mom had it on. My earliest memory of Elvis was when he performed on the Ed Sullivan show. I remember two songs: Don't Step on My Blue Suede Shoes, and You Ain't Nothin' but a Hound Dog. I'm 74 and my memory is sometimes a little 'iffy'. But those two songs have stayed with me, because I liked dogs back then, and still do. And my grandpa had a couple of Hound Dogs. snicker. Regarding the Blue Suede Shoes, LOL, I was a kid who hated wearing shoes. And I didn't know what 'suede' was, but someone was wearing BLUE SHOES. Blue has always been my favorite color. EVERY shade of Blue. So that song stuck with me. I know I heard him singing over the years, but I was still a kid and most of his music didn't filter through my brain that was filled with childhood pleasures and treasures. But I remember him from twelve years and on. smh Still, I never heard 'this' song. Now, as to wearing a ring around my neck, ROFLMBO... I think I got confused and thought people actually had 'large' rings made for their necks. So, it's wearing a ring on a chain that is worn around the neck? Seriously?!! That's what the fuss was about? No one noticed before the song that some people wore rings around their necks? Did I still mis-understand? smh I was going to look for this song anyway. Now, I'm leaving before I forget it.

I remember this song and the era very well. I was in high school at the time. Wearing a guy's graduation ring on a chain around her neck was a sign of going steady. The ring was not worn on the girl's finger because it would have been in a man's size and probably would not have stayed on. When my father first heard this song he said to my mother that 'they're still doing this' and smiled.

That’s not true. Anyone who was a teenager during that time will tell you that it was completely innocent when a girl wore a guy’s ring around her neck. Usually they had never even been on a date. It was just the beginning of teenagers flirting. It was before the birth control pill and society was much less promiscuous then.

This is stupid! High school kids who were dating often exchanged high school rings when they were "going steady," which meant they were committed to dating each other exclusively. Back then, dating didn't mean sex. The exchanged rings were the wrong size, so they were often worn on a chain around one's neck. Often a girl would put tape around the boy's ring in order to "resize" it to fit her finger, but she could also opt to wear it as a necklace. Guys didn't have a way to resize the ring, so they would have to wear it as a necklace. There was no hidden meaning in that song!

So many untruths about Elvis. A ring around your neck is not vulgar. Not sure where these stories originate!

I find it hard to believe that this song was controversial when other songs - All Shook up ''There's only one cure for that body of mine and that's to have that girl that I love so fine'' makes a very obvious sexual reference and Jailhouse rock has homosexual references and is even more controversial but I recall no campaigns about those particular lyrics corrupting us all. There were mentions of Elvis being a danger to youth but that was general and not specific to particular songs. Of course they were right rock and roll was corrupting us all thank goodness. What I liked about Wear My Ring was the innovative arrangement where the bass would come in and get answered by the guitar - still sounds fresh.

People can never be satisfied, they will always find an excuse to rant and rave over nothing, Elvis, Sir Cliff Richard my late mother adored their songs and at 64 i prefer to listen to all The Golden oldies than some of the cr....p playing on radio stations today, just wish I could turn back the hands of time

Ridiculous... I was around in those days, and nothing wicked was inferred or implied about wearing a ring on a necklace... I knew one girl who wore her deceased grandmother's ring on a chain. Sin?.. Very nice song, and NOTHNG wrong with it.

Elvis Presley produced, with rare exceptions, his own records. Steve Sholes was assigned by RCA to be Elvis' producer, but in reality had no such function.

Instead of giving a test after watching the video they should have a better commentator. I’ve heard of the Everly Brothers, but not the Everlie Brothers. Also, they should’ve checked the spelling , volume is spelled VOLUME, not VOLUMAE.

Wear a ring around your neck meant that you were wearing that instead of wearing that "class ring" on your finger, you put it on a chain and wore it there instead. Sometimes to hide a relationship you didn't want your parents to know about, lol. This happened before the days of thread and fingernail polish to "size" the ring for a smaller finger. It took lots of time to make the ring fit and a razor blade to remove the layers. Obviously, I am old and remember these things. 74 with 8 great grandchildren.

Actually since it was the girl wearing the ring around the neck it would have been too big for her finger.

Back in the day high school girls wore their boyfriends ring around their necks on chains and angora. They also wore their rings on their ring finger wrapped in angora to make it fit. I know I did it in the sixties.

School rings , given to a girlfriend , where put on chain ,to wear around the neck. Usually , men's ring were bigger , and usually, fell off and lost off girls finger. Rings just don't fit around anyone's neck.and, most upheld , virginity until they got married. And, could be questions if not? There was a time when younger people believed in early marriage. Especially,, when men worked, concept , and lucky to afford wedding bands....or engagement ring.. wearing a man's ring , on chain was considered going steady, I f married a wedding band. So no, his song asking for steady girl, to wear his ring ,didn't mean to get f appointment at blacksmith, with a bag of gold. 😮

😂 By heck to rhymn with neck? By heck is a old Lancashire expression in the UK. Hearing Elvis singing is too funny. A million sales of this little ditty shows me that if he sang the telephone directory, he'd have sold as much. What a guy. ❤ It might be that it was racy depending on the age Elvis was at the time.

People make me sick. I wore a guy's letter man's jacket one day because I was cold. Little did I know but a rumor went around school that I had slept with the guy. Of course he did nothing to dissuade folks from imaging whatever. Years later, when I found out, I understood why a few people wrecked my yearbook with comments about their "disappointment" in my morals.

Sign of the times. In my day if a girl wore a ring around their neck it meant they were going steady, nothing about premarital sex.
