Wait until they realize that having ram as a storage unit would be quicker and will not degrade almost anything, so I think we will see again ram as storage devices since it is good to have it as volatile storage for plotting, good part, it will release ssd, bad side, it will make the coin unfarmable for regular users, then they will change to a way that needs a lot more temporary storage, in my opinion, they should have done it from the beginning, to need an hdd of 4 to 8 tb to do this, that way it wouldn't impact the entry level market, for nor only the small ssd are surviving, but using raid when the prices go too high will eliminate them also from the entry level market

Hobby? More like tech-business now. You can earn money on it! That is, casino money that can be exchanged/gambled with for real money! No one who has tech as a hobby is buying SSD:s or state-of-the-art graphics cards right now, unless they absolutely have to (most likely to mine dem currencies).

honestly man , going like this, in 10 years time, half the electricity energy will be used for mining, people stop gaming or use a PC for regular use ,as all components are just being used for mining, even RAM sticks will be scalped. This is getting too much i just wish countries start taxing crypto as well, might stop this madness. i just hope by the time i become financially independent, i can afford PC parts , ffs , it has been my dream for years ;(

It destroyed ecosystems and left ghost towns, but humanity collectively doesn't care about side effects when making money is involved. It's just less relatable because now they're data streams through electronics and not something you can physically do. I've heard Chia promoted as environmentally friendly due to less electrical consumption, but it seems terrible with SSD/NVMe longevity. It seems like it's easier to make BTC mining eFriendly easier than you can Chia mining. Maybe if the RAM/storage ratio is 1:1, that's probably the ideal Chia mining rig and would be best performance possible, of course, the mining algorithm would have to be designed to take advantage of the abundance of RAM.

Unfortunately at this moment there is indeed no way get a chance of farming any Chia anymore with the current (non-pool) application. Even with a Threadripper, or equivalent processing power in multiple plotting pc's with Core i7's or i9's, the growth rate of the Chia netspace is so much higher than how fast you can create plots, that you won't get below something like 6 months to 'earn' one Chia. I do wonder if pools will be interesting, because since there are so many people jumping in, the investment in fast ssds, a high-threadcount cpu(s), ram and harddrive storage may exceed the revenue by far. You can do some calculations, using the official data on the chiaexplorer website. We have to see where it's going. I hope it will get better.

Chia farmers generally purchase hard drives between 10TB and 18TB for 20-25 USD per terabyte. This isn't going to affect prices of standard 2TB disk drives that many consumers have in their PCs. Enthusiast grade SSDs with less than 500TB of write endurance are also not commonly used for plotting, as they would wear out in under a month. As a result, the impact of chia mining on regular consumers is way overblown.

Until the manufacturers realize they will make way more profits by stopping the low capacity drive production and increase the enterprise grade SSDs and high capacity HDDs. Then everything will cost more.

High capacity HDDs and enterprise grade SSDs use different manufacturing processes than their mass-market counterparts. The manufacturers cannot use their current mass-market factories to produce enterprise grade components without retooling them, which costs a significant amount. Instead, they are more likely to create new fabs to match the increased demand.

There's an agenda behind it. More people ditching Windows means the system is losing control. Kind of hard to make open source stuff illegal, so the next best thing is just a hardware shortage. That, and if people don't have computers, what do they need stuff like VPNs for?
