SS Rex: Italy's Ship of State
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
SS Rex was built to compete with the large ocean liners of other countries including Germany's Bremen and Europa. The ship's original owner was forced to merge with its competitor by Italy's dictator Mussolini and Rex joined her rival Conte di Savoia as a fleet mate. As Italy's premier passenger liner, Rex was comfortable, large, and fast and even captured the westbound Blue Riband early in her career. She was beautiful inside and out, featured two on-deck pools, and was ideal for both traversing the southern Atlantic route and cruising the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, Rex met an early end during World War II.

If you were to cross the Atlantic in the 1930s, would you prefer the southern route or the northern route to/from New York?

I would prefer the Southern Route to and from New York. Sailing one way on the Rex to Europe to do the grand European Tour and then return on the Rex or Conte Di Savoia. Warm weather, luxury and great service year round!

Fun fact. The deck surrounding the Rex’s first class outdoor pool was routinely covered in sand to give the impression of a beach. A pretty cool idea that I kind of wish would be a thing on modern cruise ships.

Since the pools are on the superstructure nowadays, it would be a bad idea because of the weight. The pool would need to become smaller to balance it out.
These old ships had so much more character then modern cruise ships.

She lies about two miles from my home. Well, what's left of her. Steel became scarse and valuable immediately after the war and for a while Rex was the biggest iron mine in my country ... but we still call that part the coast "at the Rex". It's basically geographical term now.

Absolutely love the Rex. Although I would have preferred her to be a bit bigger to better match the name, she's my most favorite Italian liner of all time. Sad her career had to be so short due to politics and war. There's a site called Old Model Kits, and they recently released a 1/350 scale kit of the Rex after their 1/350 Normandie. Both of them are gorgeous looking models which I have every intention on getting. You may wanna check them out at some point. Oh and the southern or northern transatlantic route doesn't matter to me. :D
Why am I so hyped everytime you announce a video?
Shoutout to the Vulcania, the ship that my Italian ancestors immigrated over on.
I love this ship!!! Can’t wait!
This is the video I have been waiting for for a very long time … thank you! Fantastic and very informative video, as always.
me immediately after seeing this on my homepage: BABE WAKE UP NEW GREAT BIG MOVE VIDEO!!!
I’m very excited to see this!! Love both routes but personal preference maybe southern route just for the warmth and sights of the Mediterranean 👍
Great Vid. Super informative 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Hey! I really enjoy watching your very informative and entertaining videos, so you're the only one i would request the following from. I find it rather sad that pretty much any information about Austria-Hungarys role in the oceanliner industry is pretty rare, despite being a considerable player in the market. I would genuinely love if you made video about that topic, doesn't have to be overly detailed, but a general overview would be phenomenal! I would gladly help in any way of course ^^ Thank you for your great work and effort
i find it so weird how Rex and so many other ships from the 30's 40's etc, seem so small yet they are about the same size of the olympic class.

Rex was indeed a beautiful liner. But I have always had a weakness for her running mate the Conte di Savoia.
Very good, sir.
the Oedipus Rex ! on a special mother's day cruise!
I actually live only 50 km away from where she sank in fact I go there on holiday in the small town of Izola which is right next to the city of Koper where she sank
My GP's were on a 1938 NYC-Napoli sailing aboard the "Conte di Savoia." They visited their native town in the Abruzzi region. (L'Aquila province)
Good video
Rex has to be one of the best ships of the 1930s
My grandfather first came to the US on the SS Rex in 1935, in steerage. The only thing he said about it is that he wished he did the crossing in the summer like his cousin, instead of the winter with all the rough seas.
SS Rex is the best ocean liner. Fact.
Hoping you do an episode on Andrea Doria/Christofero Columbo.
She sank in Slovenia, between Izola and Koper. The coast where it sank is also called "Pri Rexu" or "At Rex".

Sad fact: Italian Line actually hoped to save the Rex after the war but since new borders put her ruins in Yugoslavian waters, they were unsuccessful and she was torn up over the next 10 years with about half of the ship still under water, even with paint still on some areas. Its even more sad with Savoia. She was burned in ‘44 by the German army, raised up and fully rebuilt but was scraped in 1950 probably because her association with Mussolini and the War. Such a shame.

20 years of difference in technical naval construction. Similar size, but more comfort and safety on the REX with all the lifeboat with engine and many with radio equipment. The powerful radio equipment on board. The REX should be a radio station to spread life connection simultaneously on both side of the ocean, like a more recent radio satellite bridge.
wait an italian line whose company execs and crew decided to lie about the severity of the situation to the passengers and then went into hiding? - good thing that never happens anymore
