SRAM Maven Brake Review | The Hope V4 Killer

Спорт

So here is my brief review of the Sram Maven brakes. I will continue to give my thoughts on them in future videos so stay tuned for that. I have a new GoPro so footage should be better than ever once I work out the wind noise.
Thanks for watching!

Nice explanation of your first impressions. Big up for seemingly keeping it real on all aspects of the brakes. You and Dale are the only two people I've heard talking about these brakes that sound genuinely honest. Solid trail speed as well mate! Subscribed 👌

Love my hope tech 4s but agree that the rear feels softer and requires many bleeds to get all the air out of the caliper. I basically ride then bleed and repeat until they feel firm. Also hopes are infamous for the pad squeal even in dry conditions. If i ever get tired of these brakes I'll try out the DH Evos.

Definitely not the nicest looking brakes on the market, part of the reason I’m not stoked to have a sram component🥲 I loved the look of the hopes, how they were cnc machined and you could see and feel all the cnc lines.

What are your thoughts now that you been riding them in PNW? I'm headed up in a few weeks and wondering how they perform in those condition. Did you run the Sintered pads right out of the box?

  • @reubenvandendool

    @reubenvandendool

    2 ай бұрын

Yeah I put the sintered in straight away. They’ve been good, you can definitely notice the difference in power when they’re cold and once they’ve got a little heat into them but it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Apart from that they’re like any other brake. Sometimes noisy in the wet and work perfect in the dry

Be careful if you install them yourself, they have a manufacturing defect that means that the pistons have to be lubricated very well since the gasket is very tight and they do not move back as quickly as they should, apparently the defect disappears after massaging several times the brake pistons.

I ran them from new a number of years ago. I loved them. They were more consistent then the hopes and had not loads of power - probably why many World Cup and EWS/EDR riders still run then after so many years. Mine just felt pretty average after 3 or so years of using them so that’s when I moved to the hopes for something different

I love everything about SRAM except their brakes! I use Hope Tech V4's and truly love everything about them...How the adjust and how they mount and so easy to bleed them....They should never need "Re-Bleeding! The Hopes also bleed and set up very nicely & very easily. I don't like the looks of the new Sram Levers or Calipers... I'll stick with my V4's

@@reubenvandendool When you use the Hope Tech Master Cylinder cover (AKA The Front or Rear brake lever) and the reservoir cup that screws into that cover. You fill the reservoir cup half way or so. Then you flick the lever 6 or 8 times until the bubbles stop appearing ...you now have bleed the brakes to their fullest performance! Easy Peasy. You Tube has a Hope Tech video on bleeding their brakes...it's a great watch!

If you go and read the review over at Vital mtb of these brakes, they mention something that you may want to look into: *_- However, the Mavens do have an extra step now, which requires a few cycles of the pistons to get things primed and set into place. The initial setup requires two to three cycles of the pistons through their full range of motion to help the two-step seals settle into place and center. I made the genius decision of ignoring this step on my initial setup and can confirm it is necessary. After referring to the troubleshooting portion of the owner's manual, I slotted two brake rotors into the caliper, cycled the pistons until they made contact, and then spread them back to the open position a couple of times. After this exercise, my experience was night and day, and I finally experienced the light lever throw and full power the Mavens were designed to have._* I'm sure Dale Stone also missed this.

Great video. My theory with the lever feel is they made it hard as a safety feature as they're so strong. Would suck if you clipped a light branch with a brake lever with such power. How you like the Zerode?

If we hardly use four pistons.. what makes you think we will need six for bikes. Even so, it would be six small pistons that will equal size of four.

If/When hope make a tech 5, it should use mineral oil imo. I've got the tech 4 e4 and they've got buckets of power until it rains (using organic pads) I've tried other brake brands and I have XTs on my eBike, but I broke my wrist in August and I don't think I'd have been able to ride anywhere near as much with my reduced grip strength and dexterity without the feather light activation on the hope lever. Also I have a tip for keeping the fresh bleed feel longer. When you bleed them, you need to back out the BPC screw so that it's not pushing on the master piston at all. That way the whole system has as much fluid in it as possible and there's no room for air and moisture to absorb into the DoT fluid. This is the same with the XTs and Saints actually, the free stroke screw has to be backed out for the bleed to stay consistent.

Yeah I did your tip from the start. May have helped but definitely didn’t solve any issues. I’m thinking I maybe had a slightly dodgy connection at one end of the hose but I’ve also heard of World Cup racers getting their hopes re bled every few runs at a World Cup. Sus.

@reubenvandendool I had to send my front off for warranty because the master cylinder had a leak, it's been fine since I got it back, I know some of the earlier batches of tech 4 levers had a QC issue. I still wouldn't buy any other brake though, if I was building my e-bike from the ground up it would have had v4s on.

Yeah they really are. I wouldn’t put these anywhere near the same level as the code R or those lower level brakes, they are definitely the best they make and are built with quality. But I’m not sure about all the extra arm pump he was getting. Maybe he struggles with arm pump more, I don’t really get it at all so I haven’t yet noticed any extra soreness or fatigue using these. They’re just a powerful and slightly more quality RSC.
