On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

As a technical note, it is my understanding that when the SR-71 engages its afterburners they are staggered moments apart as both of them coming on full simutanously imparts too much stress on the airframe. I noticed in the opening when the aircraft rolled out both afterburners kicked in at the same time. In real life I believe the RH J58 kicks in first followed shortly thereafter by the LH. I'm not trying to be nit-picky, its just something I immediately noticed.

Back in 1978 my late father who was in the Air Force at the time, took me out to the flight line at Randolph AFB and there sat the SR-71 Blackbird in all her glory. To me at the time it looked like a space ship. Still one of my favorite airplanes because it still reminds me of my father.

Sorry to hear about your dad. If you didn't know the BlackBirds were designed with probably the earliest stealth technology used for military purposes. I have come to the conclusion the SR-71's could of been called the "Dagger" with it's design and how it cut it's way through the sky. The shooting down of Gary Powers in the "U2 and later models The TR-1 Dragon Ladies" led to the development of the BlackBirds sooner then if it hadn't been shot down. Kelly Johnson head of the Skunkworks knew the U2's were close to being outdated when they first entered service and had already with the idea for it's replacement. You can name a lot of planes that Lockheed and ( the Skunk Works ) advance division of Lockheed that performed beyond what they were expected to.

There was also another nickname not that well known at the time, in 1968 the SR-71 Blackbird was station in Okinawa Japan to fly sorties there and the local Okinawans nicknamed it the "Habu" because its color and distinctive chines, it reminded them of a poisonous cobra found on the island of the same name. I look forward to seeing the future successor of the SR-71 a proposed UAV, the SR-72, is under development by Lockheed Martin, and scheduled to fly in 2025.

Yeah, also didn't know the MiG-31S's could get above an SR-71 at 80,000ft :P Agree with you that most of the SR-71 evasions were simply push the throttles up a little, accelerate and pass the intercept point before the MiGs missiles or SAMs could get there to strike it. Ground track was fixed well before flight, as was altitude for the cameras.

Much faster than what it flew at and you need a lifting body, not a conventional winged aircraft. Think Dream Chaser, Space Shuttle, etc. At those kinds of speeds, the altitude you need to go that fast means the air is so thin, and the speed is so high the air starts to act in a way you wouldn't expect from flying regular supersonic aircraft. The equations are the same, but you are at the extreme ends of so many variables the behavior is different.

A few MiG-31s successfully intercepted the SR-71, but it was intentional by the US as they were trying to cool tensions with the USSR. A MiG-31 could never hope to intercept without already knowing the 71’s flight plan ahead of time (in no small part due to the fact that the 71 is significantly faster than the MiG).

I used to work with a guy that was in the U.S. air force in Spain. He said that the Blackbird mission time frame was secret. But they would know when it was going to happen when a 130 tanker would take off, 45 minutes later another tanker would take off, then about a half hour later another tanker would take off. They knew the Blackbird was soon to follow since it had to fuel up shortly after it lifted off. Him and his crew would drive security nuts by having to "work" on the 130's radar in the middle of the night and focus the beam at full strength at the dark buildings in area where the Blackbirds were located. This would cause the florescent lights to illuminate so security would go tearing off into that side of the building so while security was going room to room in that side of the darkened building, they would illuminate the lights in another section and watch them tear off into that side of the building or another building. They apparently did this several times before they were caught. I was told that the command staff was not amused.

The closest service jet that could come close to matching the SR-71 in speed was the MIG 25 Foxbat. Even if you attempted it the engines were pretty much toast after a few minutes of use. This was one of the approaches that was thought up in a thought tank known as the "golden bb". Basically a head on attack with a missile at combined speeds exceeding Mach 3. Whoever is responsible for planning that clust-f*ck will be answering to the Senate Intel Committee (before they resign), and of course, it wasn't lost on me that if one of those missiles had made contact, the entire course of history changes forever; possibly even ending entirely. I would imagine that a good few of those 'more picky' people in the audience are veterans who can't help but cringe when 'realistic videos' just turn out to be another teen-boy war fantasy. The Blackbird with 1960s and 1970s technology, only can know that a radar is locking it (i.e., the MiGs, not how many missiles are in the air nor where, let alone "tracking" them) and the approximate direction of the radar, not the exact position. The problem is ultimately that the missiles' small control surfaces just cannot have any appreciable effect at the thin air of that altitude, but the SR-71's proportionally larger ones allow it to perform greater course alterations. At lower altitudes, the missiles would absolutely win, but without thrust vectoring they just cannot really steer themselves that high up.

Wouldn't they be using R-37 missiles that can reach Mach 5-6? That'd make a huge difference. Even R-33 can do mach 6 under ideal conditions according to the spec sheet. As long as it's shot within decent range I don't expect the SR-71 would be able to do anything.

I live in LWW, CA very close Beale AF base. At one time a number of SR71 pilots lived here. One drove an Aston Martin DB 9. He told me when you're used to flying a 2,000 mph, you needed to drive a fast car. Also, I believe when the SR71 took off it had a couple of Ford Mustangs supporting the wings.

Just a thought situation! The SR-71 its stated never flew over soviet territory, just along outside the territorial borders. Also the flights were not as secret as we at that time thought because they had the transponders on so the soviets could see where they flew! The soviets trained with their MIG-31s to intercept the SR-71 and could have shot it down if it had entered Soviet airspace. The method used then would be to intercept the SR-71 from the front with long range missiles as it was impossible to attack from the rear due to the high speed of the SR-71. Another nation to intercept the SR-71 from the front was Sweden with their modern Viggen aircraft, who intercepted the SR-71 quite regularly. The only defense sytem the SR-71 had was an advanced jamming system which made it difficult to target it with radar guided missiles.

I’ve seen breakdowns on the math involved with shooting down an SR-71. Basically, if it’s not a simulation where you know exactly where the Blackbird is and the crew isn’t trying to evade, it’s impossible. That aircraft flies at 33 MILES per minute... that’s an entire mile every couple of seconds. One change in acceleration or heading, and the SR-71 is now miles away in a completely different location, meaning the intercept now has to change dramatically. This isn’t like an F-18 going full throttle but still being within the same general area. We’re talking miles. The math on it is insane. They tried to shoot it down hundreds of times, scoring a grand total of zero hits. The story about the Swedes (I believe) knew where it was and where it was going. I can hit an SR-71 with a baseball if I knew exactly where it was going to be and when...

None, the Swedes intercepted it while it had suffered an engine malfunction. It was unable to climb back to a safe altitude so it was limping along to a NATO airbase. The Swedes intercepted it and escorted it out of their airspace and away from several Russian interceptors that were on its tail. Sometime either after or late in the Cold War both Swedish pilots were awarded medals by the US air-force.

before mig25 defecting to Japan US didn't know how automated it was. Sweden had great view of intercepts and where amazed how acured the mig pilots where every time. every time the SR fly at 66k feet and every time mig25 was intercepting it exactly at 55k feet and 2.9km behind the SR. untill they get there hands on one and saw its completely automated and from 2.9km range at 66,000 you are not evading r33 that is hypersonic. USSR made a 4 Mack cruse missile just to test it and one mig25 downed 2 of the test targets at 72,000 at mack 3.9. also Russians had practice to use different types of tracking one r33 radar one ir fired at the same time. And last mig31 was build to intercept fast low-level targets you should have used mig25 its also faster then mig31 by alot.

I don't believe that this is a typical SR-71 mission profile. You got the refueling point down OK, but by the time the bird entered Soviet airspace, it would already be at 80K+ feet and level at Mach 3+. THAT is the profile that should have been depicted and that is the problem for the Soviet defenders. Ground based SAMs and yeah maybe a couple of MiG-31s.
