SQUAD LEADER / How to Play Scenario 1 The GUARDS COUNTERATTACK / AVALON HILL's CLASSIC Board Game

Ойындар

Avalon Hill's classic board game Squad Leader is a classic that really recreates the feel of small unit combat in World War II. It may be a bit ambitious to teach this game via video, but let's give it a try! In this video, I will go over how to play scenario 1, the Guards Counterattack.

#squadleader
@avalonhill
A shot disturbs the eerie silence of a deserted city street, punctuated by the frantic footfalls of men seeking cover. One of Kruger’s last veteran nco’s lies motionless in the street. The remnants of the dead man’s squad are nowhere to be seen-scattered in nearby houses and gutters-all thoughts of the advance abandoned with the sudden demise of their leader...the compulsion for revenge obviously overcome by their instinct for self-preservation. Off to the right, Kruger’s own men have located the source of the lethal shot and are laying down a steady stream of fire on the church steeple directly ahead. The absence of responding fire suggests that the lone Russian marksman has beat a hasty retreat or been victimized by the withering fire of the German retort. Kruger has seen enough. He is to occupy the church and set up a regimental observation post at once. His orders leave no leeway for delays by a single sniper. He gives the signal to rush the building. Obedient to their training, his men, veterans of France, the Balkans, and 18 months of fighting in Russia, spring to their feet. Seconds later the sharp, staccato retort of a Russian machinegun concludes with the assertiveness of death itself that this time Kruger was wrong...
This is Squad Leader...a game of WWII tactical combat in Europe. Now you make the instant decisions resulting in life or death for your men, victory or defeat for your army...for YOU are the Squad Leader. YOU direct the fire of your squad, select your plan of attack, or set your defenses against massed Russian human wave or armor assaults. Will that hedgerow provide adequate cover for your flanking efforts, or will your men be cut down by the American machinegun position in the woods? The decision is irrevocable and yours alone. You must live or die by the results.
Squad Leader utilizes programmed instruction to guide you through 12 scenarios of increasing realism and complexity. The scenarios run the gamut from street fighting in Stalingrad to armored advances across snow covered roads in the Ardennes. A Campaign Game ties the individual scenarios together and allows your own personal leader counter to advance in rank and ability. In addition, a “Design Your Own” section is included so that players can create an unlimited number of play situations of their own creation.
Each hex in Squad Leader represents 40 meters of real terrain with counters representing individual leaders, support weapons, and vehicles or 4 man crews and 12 man squads. Each game turn is divided into two player turns with 8 phases, equivalent to two minutes of actual time.
Squad Leader is more than just a game, it is a game system which can be used to portray any WWII infantry action. Its innovative system does for infantry combat what Panzerblitz and Panzer Leader have done for armored warfare games. Squad Leader provides innovative rules for morale, leadership, machineguns, flamethrowers, demo charges, smoke, hidden placement, sewer movement, off-board artillery, radio contact, anti-tank guns, night actions, wire, entrenchments, mines, bunkers, rubble, multi-story building differentiation, fire, river crossings, roadblocks, mortars, and much more.
Be forewarned! Squad Leader is not an easy game. Do not attempt it without prior wargaming experience. Squad Leader is rated Tournament Level IV on the A.H. Complexity scale.

Beleive or not I brought iron cross before squad leader. Had no mentors did not know any better. Once I had funds I brought squad leader. I enjoyed all the scenarios and the made up some of my own based on current events such as Grenada war. I currently still working for the military over 40 years, 26 active the rest contractor. Provide support capacity from Grenada to Iraqi war. Currently supporting central and South America. Was thinking about even creating a game on the potential conflict in Puerto Rico. This would be complex as there are many different type of opponents such as gangs in the villages, some currupt police forces, cartels from within or outside, outside influences such China, Venezuela, Cuba, Russia and Nicuagua. Also an element of ISIS, they do exist in the region of the world. As for US forces from different services, special ops from Southern Command, the Special Security forces Bat (SFAB) this is a basically new units considered it a 800 man A-team, they are not spec ops but more training and advisement at the support level. Aviation units scattered throughout the region. Allies are Chile, Guatemala, Brazil. Army South will have overall command since this is their region. Forces will be deployed from Guantanamo Bay, Florida, Cuba, St Martin and Haiti and Jamaica. That is just some of my thoughts, politics and economics challenges has to be factor in.

I have played both Squad Leader and ASL. The "Crescendo of Doom" player environment (module to original Squad Leader) is much more difficult to understand than ASL. ASL is a true "sandbox" that will never involve ALL of the rules, in any scenario. If you want to play an ASL scenario, the two players can spend about five minutes before the game, clarifying the rules. Crescendo of Doom seemed to change ALL of the rules from Squad Leader and Cross of Iron, in a very unsatisfying way.

My experience was similar. The ASL rules just seemed to make it a little too complex in the basic operation. Someone else commented that they use a sort of hybrid of the systems, which might be a good idea. I have none of my copies of all these modules, so probably will never play this again. Great memories, and this was a good video to introduce people to it.

@@garyfortenberry5829 "ASL is much more playable, without all the gotcha rules from SL." Complete opposite of my experience and I too have played both and sold off my ASL right before MMP reprinted them all. YMMV but I don't see how anyone could buy this when you need only look at the 3-ring binders for rules you need with ASL. Seriously. :)

  • @garyfortenberry5829

@@GrumblingGrognard Just the way defensive fire alone works now makes the change worth it. Machine Guns feel much better in use. Snipers work better. Vehicles and Gun rules have been improved. OBA could still use some work, but it’s playable. I took exception to your statement that ASL adds hours to gameplay. To say that is an exaggeration is a huge understatement. ASL takes no longer to play than SL. In fact, length of time needed for either is much more dependent on speed of play of participants than the systems in question. Most of the ASL rules are for specific situations and not used in every situation. The SL rules and gamettes are poorly cobbled together and get increasingly unplayable as one progresses through them. ASL took that mess and cleaned it up turning the system into a very playable, smoothly running game. As they say, don’t judge a book…err, binder…by its cover. P.S. It’s been my overwhelming experience that those so vehemently opposed to ASL in favor of SL fall into two categories: those who tried to learn it alone without reaching out or those who resent the way AH dropped SL for ASL. In the first case, it is so much better to have someone teach you the game than to try it solo. There is no cure for the second case.

@@garyfortenberry5829 "ASL takes no longer to play than SL." This is simply not true. Perhaps you feel that way, and perhaps you can play it quickly; but this is silly. I mean seriously: You are saying that the additional hundreds of pages of rules (heck...you and I both know it is more likely over a thousand pages with all of the expansions!) and the resulting rules add no additional playing time whatsoever. ...yeah, right and ASL is the first/only game in history to pull that off, right?

SL is a great game, played the hell out of it when I was a teen. Problem is no one really plays it anymore. It's a relic/collector game these days. People like to give ASL a hard time for being "too hard" (it's not), but there are literally thousands of documented games played every month. Very easy to still find opponents, 40 years after initial release.

Many hours and nights spent playing "The guards counterattack" What a fun game this was for me to play. I think I picked this up my Freshman year in HS. Some of the most fun I had was dreaming about the promised expansions-what they would be and more importantly when? I really liked this game but enjoyed ASL so much more. The Idea that if a unit of 10 men failed 2 morale checks, they were dead always seems a little severe. The idea of half squads and to reduce a units base moral if it failed morale checks by more than a certain number was more realistic to me. ASL never seemed like "Tobruk" if anyone knows what I mean by that. All my ASL is in storage Cant decide if I should part with it on eBay or dust it off, set it up

To find an opponent( a second person). You have to find some prospect (s) who is interested in such history and has the "free time" to do so and is local to you.* The "programmed instructions" of the game really work for understanding the rules and towards fighting more advanced battles i.e. (the next scenario), . But you have to find somebody (or bodies;) wanting to make a go of it with . * I suggest doing volunteer work around local old folk's/retirement homes and ask some of the smarter people there. That is my best guess to look for Squad Leader opponents currently and also locally .

The key to this scenario is the lack of Russian leaders. There are only 3. The guards units (6-2-8s) have only 1 leader for 12 squads. It's a really good leader (10-2) but one KIA result and your entire west flank starts failing. The size of the map and the location of German troops makes moving a leader over to replace the loss of this 10-2 nearly impossible. He's likely to die in the street between buildings. When playing the Russians, especially the guard units, keep your leader separate and back, just rallying. One bad result on your leader stack and you've probably lost. Having a couple guards units go berserk can go a long way towards a Soviet victory as well. In my experience, the Germans usually win this one, and is tied almost exclusively to the survival of the Russian leaders. Conversely, if you are playing the Germans, always fire at the Russian stacks with leaders, when possible.

Bought this in 1985, I was in the Air Force with a boring desk job and living in the barracks which was just as boring. I took the rulebook to work and read the sections and when I next had a day off, played the scenarios. Great game. I later purchased Cross of Iron and Crescendo of Doom but was disappointed as the level of complexity just got too much to keep up with and I always played these games solitaire. Computer wargaming has changed everything now anyway. PS. I do like the Streets of Stalingrad scenario with tanks and flamethrowers but also Hill 621 is a favorite of mine as well, all those Soviet troops pouring out of the town.

Thanks for watching, and for pointing those out! I did address the defensive fire point at 32:20, although it was perhaps too much of a "throwaway line". @@LegendaryTactics I must confess I had stopped watching rather early on. So I went to listen at the 29.06 point. You indeed address DM. The reason i raised the point is that a significant number of players think one has to fire twice at a unit to get it DM in the first place. Anyway, I stopped playing SL and its gamettes about 35 years ago when I moved to ASL. Still have a soft spot for the old buddy though.

  • @garyfortenberry5829

And, that change in ASL, adding a Defensive First Fire Phase that is intertwined with the Movement Phase is what makes ASL such an improvement over SL. No more putting reticle marker all over the place during movement, then trying to remember who moved through each reticle to drag them back so that they can be fired upon, then placing the unscathed survivors back wherever they ended up the movement phase. The varying degrees of KIA results along with Random Selection rules are very nice additions as well.

Those square dice were "Life or Death" , "Win or Lose". And them wearing down only made your game copy look like a veteran of many battles, many opponents, many memories of such battles. Using new " cheap-az backgammon dice" (I don't care even if they are made of real Ivory or blood diamonds) would be an insult to the game of Squad Leader .
