ADVANCED SQUAD LEADER Tactics Guide / THE GENERAL Speaks
Ойындар
In perusing an old copy of The General Magazine, I came across a beginner's guide to tactics in Advanced Squad Leader, and I thought I would bring it to life to help people who are looking to try this classic game, but who are unsure about the tactics to use. It also might serve as a refresher to those who haven't played it in a while. Hope it helps!

Advanced Squad Leader is the completely reorganized and re-designed version of the original Squad Leader system. This three-ring binder is the basic rules for the entire system, and provides the ultimate combination of playability and detail. Full-color charts and beautiful pictures make this the most readable of rulebooks - and includes a full-service index as well for quick reference.
And ASL is more than "squads" - the system includes the rules for everything from machine guns to bazookas, tanks and ordnance weapons, paratrooper drops, glider landings and beach assaults. And much more. This set of rules is constantly kept up to date by expansions included with the modules.
ASL goals are scenario-defined, and vary from tasks such as exiting troops off of one edge of the board, to inflicting a certain number of casualty points on the opposing force, to capturing a certain number of goal buildings or areas.
This is just the rulebook. To start playing the game the newcomer must get, at least, the Beyond Valor: ASL Module 1. There are a great many ASL Modules available. "Core Modules" provide additional rules, units from different nationalities, and additional geomorphic mapboards. "Historical Modules" provide campaign games simulating multi-day battles using actual historical maps rather than geomorphic mapboards, including additional rules, counters, and paper maps. Many modules have dependencies on earlier modules.

I'm reading this very article right now. Excellent choice of article to summarize.

@@LegendaryTactics IMHO you did a fantastic job. And Mike McGrath is one of the best ASL players ever.
The greatest game ever and I play many wargames. Been playing since release

Managing your own morale (and patience) is probably the best advice for playing almost any wargame.

If they consider releasing on iOS, I would buy instantly.

It would be neat to see them give the game a proper digital treatment. There have been a few attempts over the years, but with today's graphics and interfaces, it could make it really playable. I guess the fear is that there aren't that many people like you or myself out there who would buy it instantly

@@LegendaryTactics Yes, I love ASL and I used to work at Wizards of the Coast, which owns Avalon Hill. They have no interest in doing it. Sad.

Hasbro, who owns WotC, holds the license. They have a licensing agreement for the PHYSICAL game with Multi-Man Publishing that gets renewed periodically. The digital rights are held by Hasbro pretty tightly. They allowed it to be used back in 1999 or 2000 maybe for a turn-based tactical shooter that was a WW2 take on Jagged Alliance. It bombed and angered a lot of ASL and SL fans. The digital version of this IS VASL.

People have been trying to make an ASL computer game for 40 years...and give up every time, or change the game to a dumbed down version. Don't hold your breath.

I totally get what you're saying, but the rules for ASL are something else. But if you know what weapons you can use against which targets, for example, you will have an actual tactical advantage against your opponent.

You might be surprised on how many ASLers DON"T read the rules.
We covered this many years ago, but we did not have the cool graphics.

What does it mean to use mortars in "direct fire mode"? Isn't mortar fire always treated as indirect fire?

Normally, yes. But here is an article that touches on direct fire with mortars: boardgamegeek.com/thread/299088/making-mortars-worth-their-weight

@@LegendaryTactics Thanks! It's a house rule, then?
Not all armor is immune to small arms fire. There are several ways armor can be defeated by infantry. Definitely unlikely (pun intended), but not impossible.

Yes, I think the author meant that in broad terms. Where there's a will (and a lucky die roll), there's a way!

That's Table Top Simulator, just a game table (like Vassal). The closest thing you'll find to an ASL computer game (with computer AI opponent) is the game Second Front.
