Spyderco Para 3 Maxamet-Sharpening and Fixing a Broken Tip

Ойын-сауық

In this video I sharpen my Maxamet Para 3. Don't believe all the hype out there that Maxamet is impossible to sharpen. It's not hard at all and doesn't take forever like some have mentioned. I even fix a broken tip in less than 30 minutes! Thanks for watching.

I have trouble understanding what people mean with hard to sharpen. It can be that one has a stone not fit for the material, then obviously its hard to sharpen. That is nearly negated with good quality diamonds like you use. Then theres the steel itself, it can have large carbides, which could chip during sharpening with smaller grits or lower angles, I could understand that and from what ive picked up maxamet might be one of those large carbide steels that doesnt like low angles, with a jig like the wicked edge pressing too hard with too sharp angles shouldnt be a worry either. Theres also steels that have a very resilient burr thats hard to get off (i had this with M390) so you just have to make sure you dont grind on one side too much (again no issue with wicked edg, right?) and then theres ceramic knives that need a fine diamond to even be sharpened or they dont get ground and like crazy. i havent been able to sharpen those yet. So for me a person behind the screen its hard to understand what the myth of maxamet being hard to sharpen originates from, That said, its no surprise to me you had no trouble with it using the jig since it is good at eliminating most of the issues, Perhaps that also proves that its just a matter of sharpening correctly or knowing what a certain steel can handle and that large carbide steels might need a keener approach than 1095. Have you ever had any issues with any steel with this setup?

That’s amazing short time. I used DMT xtra corse and it took me 2 straight hours to reprofile a Chris Reeve Sebenza

I'm happy for you that you can sharpen yours so easily. I am having zero luck. Is there anyone you could recommend I send it to? I'm tired of trying.

Are you clamping down on the flats of this knife? I’ve had trouble clamping para 3 and pm2 because of the distal taper
