I never let the edge go totally dull.. That knife is not yet where I sharpen my knives.. Time to sharpen is when it will no longer be able to slice printer paper, but still cuts cardboard and just like you ,I really enjoy sharpening time😉 It's the best relax and meditation ever🙏

Awesome Gerald! Keep going! I generally keep my knives shaving sharp but am intrigued by this experiment. Please do the K390 next and compare and contrast with Maxamet.

Maxamet is some really strage stuff. It seems to cut forever, and it also seems to respond to touch-ups amazingly well. It's almost like as it dulls the apex doesn't really break down, it just slightly rounds off or something. I have used my maxamet manix for *literally* a year without sharpening it after the initial sharpen. I have ONLY hit it on ceramic stones and stropped. I decided to break down some boxes to throw away last week and used my manix. It was at least a few hundred cuts. After that the blade wouldn't shave hair. It could pop some of them, but it wasn't reliably shaving. I took it to my kangaroo strop loaded with .5 micron spray and stropped it for maybe 2 minutes. Alternating sides each stroke. I didn't expect much from just stropping but.....to my surprise the edge was sharp as hell. Like sticky sharp again. For shits and giggles I pulled a hair from my head and what do you know? It freaking whittles hair again. I was absolutely blown away. I have never had a steel that far gone, be stropped back to such an aggressive AND fine edge, ever. I'm wondering how many years it will take me to actually put this knife back to stone.

Keep stropping. I have found that if I always strop or use the Spyderco Sharp Maker as soon as the edge begins to dull I rarely have to sharpen or re-profile the edge K390 next. Thanks for the update.

For guys like you Maxamet would last a long time. If I only carried Maxamet when I wasn't at work it would probably last me 8-10 months on one edge.

Damn man... that is impressive to hear it quantified. I’ve seen the magic of Maxamet in everyday use, but never counted the ft, so to hear it put into numbers is pretty astounding. Man, that’s going to be sweet with those scales on there. That steel combined with the ergos of the micarta scales, you’ll be able to cut all day👍

I love to sharpen so my knives never get to dull unless its a rough day of use but I strop pretty much after a day of use, i might even be known to over sharpen but I keep one of those polishing stones from lanskey or what spyderco uses for those rods, it gets out any hicups from use then I strop

  • @timbo4374

That's pretty impressive. Since I'm retired now, and don't do as much cutting as I used to, Plus rotating through different knives, I'd probably never need to sharpen it, lol. I generally strop my knives at the end of the day before putting it away. The number of passes depends on the amount of use. It may be 3 passes or 10, on a 6 mic then 3 mic, but doing this, I can go a damn awful long time between sharpening, unless of course I do damage to the edge. I have knives that I use pretty often, and have not put to stones in months, yet will still shave hair easily. That's just me. We all have our own way of maintaining our knives.

I'd love to see how far that maximet goes. Very impressed with it! After that, I'm curious about that k390! Do you know what the HRC was measured at for Kurt's knife? Last set of HRC values I've heard for the new Bento Box exclusives seemed too low

I’d like to see it run longer but I’m not sure maxamet would ever dull fully for cutting cardboard and plastic. I’m a fan of tool steels so my vote is k390 next. I’m trying to decide between the 2 steels for my next knife. I’m really interested in the k390 patina results. Great vid! Thanks for the market research. 🍻

I'm going to keep running the Maxamet to see what happens, I've never run it completely dull, now us about when I'd sharpen. If you haven't had Maxamet or K390 either is a good choice. Kurt gave me the go to keep the Police 4 as long as I need to but I'm thinking it will be up next for the same style of extended carry and use.

Thanks G. Is what I do, and would like to see you do with this one. Is keep stropping it back, until the paper test, is a hard fail. I even, often. Bump-up my stropping routine towards the end. With more passes, than done early on. Also note. That my normal 'coarse' compound, is a 7 micron. I do have some coarser, but I only use it. If I get behind in my stropping. 👍🔪☀️😎

Since uve never run Maxamet completely dull now is a great time to try that since I have this much use on it already. I've stropped it twice now so I'm curious just how much longer it's going to go.

Quick question; I just bought a PM2 in Max. I was recommended 1 micron spray for stropping and now I see you guys using 2 seperate solutions. Do I need another diamond solution and another stropping pad? I haven't even bought a stropping pad yet either because I dont know what to get. Bought another 2 knives, 1 PM2 Bento M390 and another Bento M390 in a PM3. Same solutions on those? Sorry guy's, I'm a gun nut, just now getting into blades.

Remember that edge you put on the XHP Manix? It's about as sharp as your Maxamet there. It's been my most used knife since you sent it. Going by that, Maxamet should last a good year! 😁 Keep going!!! Definitely interested in the K390, but you hang on to it as long as you want to. No worries there! Thanks G!

Hey Gerald! So you know my GB2 is back in Colorado for repair, but I got used to M4 edge retention. So I have the burl s90v Manix I was ho-humm about steel-wise. You suggested I sharpen it a couple more times, so I did. After the last sharpning, the s90v took off and CUT ...... 3 weeks, same edge and going strong !! The s90v is now so good edge retention wise, I do not miss the M4 a bit. I love s90v now. I'm happy with s90v, but you know how knife nerds are, always looking for more performance. I always stayed away from Maxamet because bigtime internet sharpeners posted horror stories and pics showing pieces of the apex missing from sharpening. They warned us all about Maxamet ..... but you and SSSteve sharpen it easy. So, are the internet experts full of it, did the Maxamet get reformulated, or is there just a better technique? Your results are so impressive, who wouldn't want Maxamet? I am a KME sharpner as well, but fear I might not be able to get good results. So Gerald, whats fact, whats fiction on Maxamet. Thanks man !

I'll talk about it in a Maxamet sharpening video within a week or so. Its nothing to be afraid of, if you can do M4 and S90V you won't have any trouble with Maxamet. Yes you can have part of the apex break off. I didn't get that memo 2 years ago and went at Maxamet like any other steel. I have seen the issue but haven't experienced it myself during sharpening.

@@Outpost_76 Thanks Gerald, that will be a vid to look forward to. Ok, I love the Manix knife platform. Do you think the lightweight Manix in Maxamet would be robust enough for a medium use shop folder? I've never handled a LW. Just general cutting with a bunch of cardboard, plastic strapping daily? The standard G10 Manix has held up amazingly well, with no wear, its a tough design.
