    Just to let you know I made up some of Ur bespoke solution lube and it works a treat (far better than just water :) Also spent an whole evening flattening my spyderco uf stone. I was shocked @ just uneven the stone was. I used a load of 400 SIC then moved onto 600 and finished with the 800 taking out the coffee breaks I spent almost three hours lapping it. Hard work but I'm really chuffed with the results. Thanks again for straightforward reliable advice mate 😎

    NICE! It took me a little less time, but it sounds like I was using a much coarser grit than yourself. It will definitely leave you winded, but the results are excellent. Not to mention, it will be a very very long time, before you ever need to reflatten (if ever). I like the 600 finish, and then let the stone break in. 800 shouldn't be far off. Hope it treats you well! Now do the other side, and leave a very coarse finish. You'll have a combo stone :D

    Those were the plates I bought (wooden box and all) that had defects. The plates themselves had gouges taken out, and then diamonds plated inside those gouges. My edge actually caught on them, and dulled when sharpening. Nah, diamonds will never be a thing for me. Maybe, something like Venev, on the other hand. They make combo stones as well. Not priced high. Could toss something like that together. I'm still trying to decide if I want to use the new Sic stones I have on the way. I don't know yet.

  • @whocares3986
    @whocares39865 жыл бұрын

    Looks good. How similar is the finish of the Gritomatic 2500 and the Venev 2000? Is there a "standard" waterstone that you have that has a similar finish to the Gritomatic 2500? That 240 grit sounds great.

  • @Jef

    @Jef

    5 жыл бұрын

    The Venev polishes much better than the Silicon Carbide. The 2500 finish is pretty similar to most 1k finishes. The scratches from the Sic are a bit more pronounced and defined, where most water stones you get that sand blast kind of look.

    I’ve read that the factory angle is 40 degrees, that gotta be inclusive? What angle do you sharpen at?

  • @Jef

    @Jef

    3 жыл бұрын

    Every knife is a little different. Spyderco sharpens between 30-40 deg inclusive. They usually come with a tiny micro bevel around 15-18 deg per side. My own sharpening, i tend to hover around 18-20 deg side (36-40 deg inclusive). I have found 30 deg inclusive edges, or lower, don’t last long, in my cutting tasks. Try not to focus so much on what angle to sharpen. Instead , concentrate on getting the edge sharp in the first place 👍

    I'm looking for a good coarse stone. You think the sic stones from gritomatic fit the bill? I want something that can hog metal and cut pretty much anything I want quickly. I also like the price of those gritomatic stones

  • @Jef

    @Jef

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yup. Gritomatic would be my top choice. The 240 can be a beast if you condition the surface. As it comes from factory, it is too slick and glazed. They also have a 120 grit although I’ve never used it. The 240 has been plenty for my needs. Anything coarser and i would go shapton pro 120 or Norton crystolon.

    How the maxamet edge sharpness holdup compare to d2 steel ?

  • @Jef

    @Jef

    3 жыл бұрын

    Maxamet doesnt polish as well or easily, as d2. That isnt to say you cant get high sharpness, or polish, just that you need the right stones. D2 doesnt hold an edge anywhere near as long either. I would say they chip at about the same rate. Maybe maxamet is a hair more brittle, but the stuff i cut, it would be impossible for me to judge.

I contacted them, expressing my interest in the SiC stones and received a reply that these were unavailable in the USA but could be sent from Russia. When I asked how I could order and pay for the stones (listed as 'out of stock' on the website) I received no reply. To ignore customer enquiries is not confidence inspiring behavior so I cannot take Gritomatic seriously and will not risk making a payment to them in the future.
