Victor Wembanyama has been historically great thus far, so just how have the Spurs been historical trash...

Like I got so pissed off by Celtics and Tatum last year when they got destroyed by GSW in a highly anticipated matchup after the finals. They just didn’t care, Tatum even said it out loud in the after game interview. If they don’t care, why should I? And I say this as a Curry fan.

@@skap_attack I don't even see how some ppl can't wrap their head around that thought. Seriously, its baffling... Basketball is still a relatively small sport outside of America, and it's been a staple in America for decades, so naturally, you'd *expect* the majority of best talent itw would to come from there. It isn't that American's just mysteriously happen to be the best humans beings itw at this particular sport... it's just that it's not as popular globally. Take Europe for example: Football absolute dominantes over there. I'm talking, the 2nd most popular sport isn't even remotely close... Only a very select few European countries actually take basketball seriously, and even the ones that do, football is still the primary sport. Spain for example have a basketball league... I've supported Real Madrid since a kid and didn't even know we had a basketball team till like 2 years ago 😂 I knew we had a futsal team and even a volleyball team, but I never imagined we had a bball team... So now you consider how comparatively small bball is here, then consider how like 3 or 4 of the top players in the NBA came from here - it paints a clear picture of just how dominant Europe could actually be at bball if we actually collectively cared for it. It's def growing in popularity here tho - slowly but surely - and while it'll always be eclipsed by football (as is every other sport anyway), if just 5-10% more of the total next European gen pick up a bball instead of a football, then it'll be very interesting to see what the bball landscape will look like 10-20 yrs from now.

@@cdknowledge If you support Real Madrid or Barcelona in Spain you should know that after football (soccer) Basketball is by far their most popular section, after that at least in Barcelona I guess it's handball. Barcelona has a top futsal team, as far as I know Real Madrid doesn't have nothing relevant in futsal. Basketball is easily the second most popular sport in Europe, obviously not with the same impact as football, but in certain european countries is a religion. I dare to say it's the most popular sport in Greece, Lithuania and former Yugoslavia, even in Turkey it's damn hot there. Would say basketball in Lithuania is so important for them like it is in Indiana for the USA, it's almost spiritual. Even so I agree with you that the United States still has a big historic advantage over Europe. Let's see with the new flux of frech players coming in if it will became their second most popular sport in France, knowing that football and rugby there still is supreme. I dare to say Basketball in the USA currently isn't so popular as it was until 20 years ago but it might be a wrong perception I have.

Spurs were tanking back then, while rolling out an old Dominique to still grab some sort of fan relevance. It is disigenuous and a complete diservice to competative balance and honorable sportsmanship (not that most of the rest of the NBA does not try to mislead while trying to get fake whistles). Still, just because you can get away with something does not mean you should do it. It is certainly not virtuous. Not that the world cares at all about virtue anymore.

The Spurs were barely going to make the playoffs this year, playing Wemby at full minutes. He had that ankle injury in January, so he's already showing that he needs time management. The rest of the team needed time to adjust to having a superstar like Vic on the roster. Oh, and the Spurs are as well positioned as you can be to pick up another great player in the draft, which this season has shown is absolutely necessary. Given all this, the Spurs are playing this year perfectly. If we get 3 years into Wemby's career and the Spurs haven't put another bona fide star next to him and haven't made the playoffs yet, then it's time to panic.

Pulling for Wemby to stay healthy and play 12-15 seasons. With his size it'll be tough because guys with that height usually have foot issues. Also hope the Spurs put some pieces around him cause he clearly hates losing. If they don't I'm positive he'll leave in free agency in a few years.

Wemby was playing good but not like how he is right now before and at the start of the season. Pop has improved Wembys footwork tremendously. Before, he couldn't run the ball down the court without tripping over his legs and falling over like a crash test dummy. Now look at the way he moves, it's like night and day. The coaching here is in development for the spurs this season, not necessarily in wins. The Spurs have 3-NBA caliber players and they're all in their early 20s. The rest of this team, are G-Leaguers. (Not an exaggeration). No coach is bringing Wemby, Sochan, and Vassell and their squad of G-Leaguers to 30 wins a season. They don't even have NBA-ready roleplayers. I've watched the spurs all season. There is nothing Pop can do with this team when the G-Leaguers can't even make wide open 3s or make a pass without throwing the ball into the crowd. This is active tanking. Wake up.

Pop has always been overated. That's why as great as Duncan and the overall talent of the Spurs were, Pop couldn't find a way to coach his team to back to back chips? 5 rings and you couldn't once put two of them together? Maybe tweak the offense a little Pop? Pop lost me when he let Shaw and Kobe beat him when he had Duncan and Robinson. It was a simple game plan. You just give the ball to Duncan or David, whoever Shaq was guarding, and tell them to aggressively attack the hole. Shaq would have been on the bench our fouled out every game, easy win. Yet Pop never did it.

Wemby has a chance to bring competition back in to vogue in the nba. Wemby seems to hate losing and doesn't seem to care about his stats if they don't come with a win unlike Bron who only cares about stats, wins be damned

As a football fan (soccer) the idea of tanking is so foreign to me. Loosing as means of winning seems counterintuitive. Relegation and promotion battles in football (soccer) are quite memorable. On the other hand the idea of giving bad teams a chance to get better is very inticing (in theory at least). In football smaller teams have it harder to win. I wish there could be a way of finding a healthy middle ground here. Maybe non playoff teams could play another in-season tournament for best draft spot ;)

As a Spurs fan I can certainly relate to the frustrations of years of tanking, but I can also see the argument for it. After all, it brought us Wemby. The problem I see with the “win now” crowd is the Lebron Cavs before he left for Miami. He was a generational 1st pick whom the Cavs surrounded with quickly traded players to try and speedrun a championship. They made it to the finals only to get swept by the Spurs ironically. The thing is, no one wants to be an “almost champion” and with the Spurs being a small market being smart in the draft is how we’ve built our championship rosters in the past. Hopefully now that we’ve seen how Wemby’s game translates to the NBA we can surround him with complementary talent and actually start winning.

SANE PERSON!!!!! Luka made the WCF... got Kyrie... then tanked late in the season for the 10th pick. SOME WAY OR ANOTHER, you're gonna "waste years of their career", unless you're Magic/LAL or Duncan/SAS. OKC *tanked* to help KD - they drafted 3 STRAIGHT future MVPs. Toronto LUCKED into getting Kawhi for 5mins Brooklyn had a "super team" about 5mins ago...

Jordan felt he had the opportunity to compete for something. He was wrong. He came back from his injury and got swept in the playoffs. Pop is smart, he has the best player from last years draft. Most teams who had the number 1 pick average around 11-15 in the following years draft. They don't win championships that next year. Why not move up from the 11-15 to the 1-4 pick? Not to mention, it's looking good that they can get the Raptors pick at 7-8. When Lebron went at 1, the next year the Cavs played hard and got the 10th pick in the draft. They drafted Luke Jackson, who was a bust. They missed out on Dwight Howard, Shaun Livingston, Devin Harris , Loul Deng, Andre Iguodala. All of them All-Stars. Dwight Howard went 1 overall, the next year they played hard and got the 12 pick in the draft. They picked up Fran Vazquez, another bust. They missed out on Chris Paul, Deron Williams. The last team to get back to back top 4 picks was OKC. Durant and Westbrook. If Durant didn't leave, it would have worked out great for them.

I think the spurs plan is bundle their lottery pick with the other 1st round picks they got, and trade for a young talented point guard. Trae young is the name that keeps coming up, but i can also see Garland from the cavs, or Fultz for the magic working as well.
