San Antonio Spurs defeats New York Knicks in OT, 130-126. For San Antonio, Victor Wembanyama led the way with a career-high 40 points, 20 rebounds, and 7 assists. Jalen Brunson finished with a new career high 61 points (5 3PM), 4 rebounds, and 6 assists while aided by Donte DiVincenzo setting a new franchise record for 3PM (242) in a season and recording 20 points (6 3PM) and 6 rebounds for New York in the losing effort. San Antonio improves to 18-56, while New York moves to 44-29 with the loss.
Victor Wembanyama becomes the first player in Spurs franchise history to record 40+ points, 20+ rebounds, and 5+ assists in a game
Victor Wembanyama is the fifth rookie overall to record 40+ PTS, 20+ REB, and 5+ AST and the first rookie to do so in over 50 years, joining:
John Drew and Wilt Chamberlain - 2x
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Walt Bellamy - 1x
Most previous instance:
John Drew - 40 PTS, 25 REB, 7 AST on 12.28.74, ATL v LA.
Wembanyama is the first rookie since Shaquille O'Neal (46 PTS, 21 REB on 02.16.93, ORL v DET) with a 40-PT, 20-REB game.
Jalen Brunson becomes the 3rd player in Knicks franchise history to record 60+ points in a game, joining:
Carmelo Anthony - 62 points NY vs CHA 1/24/2014
Bernard King - 60 points NY vs NJ 12/25/1984
DiVincenzo set a new single season record in his 71st game of the season, the fifth-fewest games for a player to achieve this feat in their first year with a new team since the 1999-2000 season.

If you actually watch the games, this guy accumulates points so easily. Normally, you can tell when a player is hot and going to finish with a high scoreline (it was obvious Brunson would have a solid night early on), but Wemby will casually stroll to 20 points without you even realising he's having a good night. It's so easy for this guy to get buckets when the team wants him to. He can get 10 points in the first half then end up doubling that in a single quarter. It's crazy.

People might say “his only advantage is he’s 7 feet 4…” But Wembanyama’s outside shooting is decent; not spectacular but decent. And he passes. Makes assists. Rebounds. Steals. Blocks shots and then takes the ball or deflects it to a teammate. Reads the floor and the opposition. He’s quick. He’s agile. He’s smart. And yes, he’s seven feet and four inches, and his arms are eight feet wide. 🤔

Here's the thing that should terrify the NBA about this Frenchman: Embiid drops 40, Wemby drops 33. Brunson drops 61, Wemby drops 40. That speaks to a "Not on my watch" attitude, as a rookie. There are some players that fold in the face of extreme challenge, and there are those that make sure you don't forget who the hell they are. Jordan used to do that. Kobe used to do that. Victor is just getting started. Hats off to Jalen Brunson though. That dude can straight up ball.
