Spring Break | North Beach VS South Beach (Miami Beach)

Spring break in south beach in 2021 has been a nightmare! Every year it is crazy, but this year in particular is worse than any year I can remember as far as the amount of crime, trash, and crowds. This is when I am extremely grateful I live in north beach. Here is the difference.

It is crazy! They don’t allow alcohol on the beach here either but it’s something that’s largely unenforced maybe it’s enforced during this time in South Beach but still trying to control crowds like that is not possible for a few hundred police officers

Fun video! In my day as a Penn student (Philadelphia ‘80) Miami Beach was still thought of as Jackie Gleason’s retired people land, so we mostly went to Fort Lauderdale on spring break. Spend the day on the beach, when the daily 3:45 pm thunderstorm came in walk across A1A to the indoor bars for happy hour, 15 minutes later the sun was out, spend until sunset at the bar swimming pool with wet t-shirt contests, then listen to live music all night. I’m not sure I could live there either these days, but I totally understand why that scene never loses its appeal to college kids. 🍻

Daytona is very near, of course. Having said all that, St Augustine's tourism has really held out well during the pandemic. So, still an upbeat place. Not the pandemic ghost town that Disney or other places in Florida have become. And our maritime archaeology research here has stayed well on track, keeping the area's cultural heritage and history tourism in tact. A great city (but not the oldest, lol) and the best of both seasons.

Thanks for the videos showing the differences in South Florida communities. I love your walking tours that give a sense of the communities. I'm researching places to buy a retirement home or second home in Florida. This video highlights some things to consider about South Florida living. Crowds! I'm a person that is respectfully of laws and just decency. I remember Spring Breaks. Most of the crowd is standing around. The bad apples that come in every bunch are the problem. It is not about race. Most people come peacefully to just hang out and have a good time. Some people do get sucked into doing things with alcohol and GOD knows what, in a crowd, that they normally would not do themselves. This is just human nature, unfortunately. It is no excuse for their behavior, we need to be responsible. This is what the police are for, to keep things in hand. The police appear to be doing a great job, thank goodness for them and the city workers who clean up the mess. It is sad that some people don't have good home training or the sense to leave an area better than they found it. We were taught these things at home, in school, in church, in Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts etc. I'm 59. What happened to teaching these good values. I feel your disgust in this video. I see this all the time in many cities in the U.S. at street lights, events, parks, and while in traffic at on-ramps: people discard trash and stuff because they can, they don't care, and there is little chance of any penalty or getting caught. Some people don't know what freedom is. Just because you are American, you can't just do whatever you want, their are laws; and, your rights stop where another's begins. These laws and rules of decency keeps things nice for everyone. I also feel your delight of the surfers, the birds, and beautiful sand. I agree that the stimulus and the relative open for business policies of Florida are bringing the extra crowds this year to many Florida cities. We have to take the bad with the good sometimes. Thanks for the insight. Sorry this is long.

I’m really happy to hear you enjoy my videos especially the walking tours. Those are definitely not the most popular on the channel but I know there is a group of people that love them. I was taught the same to leave an area cleaner than you found it in Boy Scouts and when I see that it’s just unacceptable. I’m not sure what Miami Beach is going to come up with for a solution but we need to figure something out to prevent these type of incidents in the future

I'm 21 and I feel you. tho I'm literally on the otherside from you here in the bay area in northern california, luckily in San Francisco Beach it's more family/dog owners friendly here but that's probably because only those who are brave enough to not wear a wet suit to swim in our cold waters actually go in haha! but it's still nice out here we got beautiful views but our city has sadly took a huge toll regarding homeless population growth because of ridiculous rent prices, and a very bad growth in drug addicts.but if you do your best to focus on the good side it's still a wonderful city I recommend you guys to visit. it's very different from Miami from What I've seen and in winter or spring it might be a good idea to wear a sweater, or in late spring and early summer maybe a long sleeve shirt cause it's foggy chilly out here usually. but sometimes summer peak up quite high. I recommend pier 39 and the awesome aquarium and ALCATRAZ visit the entire tour it's so interesting. I really want to visit here or the keys of Florida. but me being 21 and especially now sadly with my generation or younger trying to hype up the "let's get drunk or high and get wild" type of vibe and scene, there's not many who enjoy the simple things in life. luckily my girlfriend shares the same passion and we plan on visiting this summer, just us, no social media, on the other side of the us, living. hope you guys been good and well despite our covid pandemic !!!!!

I’ve been to Miami Beach but never really compared the beach locations. Is it safe to swim in either north, mid or south beach this time of year? Should people be concerned about anything harmful, such as sharks, jellyfish, crabs, etc.? Is cheap parking a lot easier to find in north beach too? Thanks. 👌🏻

Just my take, without bashing on the kids, I would only testify that even since I was living in Hallandale in 1996, South Beach is not a place hungry for people. It has been bought and owned by the locals, and I mean locals within 2-5 miles, or playing basketball for the HEAT. It was $18 for me to park by the beach long enough to go to a job interview there. And that was over 25 years ago. My friends and I went out at night and encountered all kinds of attitude from bouncers, patrons, security guards, just general unpleasantness, and had to park a mile away. When I was in college, we went to Panama City one year. The place was empty before we got there, the other college kids and the bars and hotels loved us. It was a place as I said, "hungry for people" to visit. Probably Daytona was perfect like that. Purpose built for guests, not competing with locals trying to live there at a high rich lifestyle. These kids you see on the news, they want to be "ballers", but they don't understand just how not welcome they are. People are going to act up, and there are places that can handle it, even embrace it.

I wouldn’t say that they’re unwelcome but the more this keeps happening then the more unwelcome they’ll be that’s for sure. I've always wanted to live in South Beach/Miami Beach. It's such a beautiful, relaxing place to be. But after seeing the chaos these past few weeks, it's definitely scratched off my list. You can only wonder if this is how those tourists act in their own cities. No regard, no respect, not even for themselves - just plain disrespect all across the board. A firm set of rules and regulations need to be set so its residents, businesses and visitors are safe and can enjoy what the area has to offer in peace.

It was close but you did a good job and were able to save this oasis... if they had allowed development, it would be a matter of time before it would be just as bad as the south beach war zone. been a local since 89 and south beach has not aged gracefully...

Mike - Enjoy your channel from The Villages in the central Florida retirement belt. I am yet another Michigander who moved to Florida about 2 1/2 years ago. I don’t know if you are aware of The Villages or not. I am 62 and still quite active. But I’m certainly one of the younger homeowners in this 55+ 6community of over 100,000. And it’s still expanding south and east. This spring and summer I plan to take some exploratory trips on over to your neck of the woods.Obviously I’m looking for a bit more excitement in my life and I do miss living in a normal population where the average age isn’t north of age 75. Still quite a serious tennis player but starting to dip my toes into Pickleball. I know your expertise is with condominiums. The monthly maintenance/amenity fees seem astronomical to me. What is the governance of a typical condominium maintenance authority? Is it controlled by unit owners (non-profit) or is it A third-party which is paid to do the maintenance and also make a profit on top of that? Or is it handled by a remnant of the original condominium builder as a steady source of income?

Hi DC, yes I have heard of the villages, I actually plan on visiting there on a trip since so many people have asked me about it. The condos here are typically setup as following. You have the management company which paid for and hired by the board of directors. Managment is in charge of daily operations, cleaning, enforcing rules, accounting etc. The board of directors is made up of units owner from the building who decide on which projects get done, the yearly budgets, changing rules etc. Ultimately, the board is in charge, and can and will replace management companies if necessary. I have seen some smaller buildings forego management and manage the building themselves amongst the board members, but that is pretty rare now days

Totally agree with you, Michael. What the hell is the pleasure having wall to wall humans screaming and tossing all their trash everywhere? This makes me ashamed of my species. Where is the beauty of nature here? What humans are doing to the earth's environment is totally disgusting. I thought you were living in south beach, and when I watched the news of the crazy looking slobs and what they were doing there, I felt sorry for you. I'm glad to know you're in a cleaner and more natural looking area. I'm happy I live in the Sarasota area and hope those stinking crowds of disgusting humans stay away from here.
