Spray Paint Wheel Restoration: 2-Year Update... Cracking and Wrinkles!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Two years ago, I restored OEM aluminum alloy wheels for my 80-Series Land Cruiser in my garage, using a combination of spray paint and Rustoleum that I applied with a brush: • How to: Complete Wheel... and finished the plastic center caps to match: • How to: Plastic Wheel ...
I've had a lot of viewers ask how well the paint held up over time. from a few feet away they look great, but when viewed close-up, there are some strange things happening: cracks and wrinkles.
I have since found better aerosol clear coat options:
Spraymax 2k Gloss: amzn.to/43KbyMK
Duplicolor 1K Gloss: amzn.to/3UKXheM
Duplicolor 1K Matte: amzn.to/3A5i6rY

I like when you go back and see how repairs have aged. Painting is a lot of prep work, don't waste that work. Use a quality catalyzed paint out of a spray gun, not a can.

Thanks, I think it's important for everyone to learn from my mistakes. So I got all the rattle cans for free at my old job and was looking to use them on something, as they do have a shelf life. The original plan was to use 2K clear, but then I read that 2k clear may not lay down well over enamel paint, so I went with the enamel clear. If I ever go through this much time prepping a set of wheels again, I will definitely use a 2k clear.

I had this exact same thing happened with a motorcycle helmet that I painted yellow a couple years ago for a costume, what I think happened is the clear coat did not bond correctly to the primer for some reason. That could have been due to improper prep on my part or some sort of compatibility issue that I wasn't aware of. In my case I used Rust-Oleum for the primer as well as the spray paint and clear coat. I think they still look fantastic honestly for what it is.

Rustoleum is also an enamel paint... I wonder if this is something that van happen if enamels are sprayed on too thick. I definitely went heavy on the clear coat. I agree, still looks great from a few feet away and was a great learning experience. Thanks!

Use prep just before each stage, primer, paint, clear. Color sand (600-800) before clear as well might help it bond tighter.

Hey there - follower from Australia - I love your enthusiasm even in a video like this where you're dealing with something that hasn't gone to plan. I am not a paint expert, but in my experience either an issue with your surface prep, but more likely I'd say either your timing between coats was off and the first few coats didn't cure properly before you hit them again or your paints weren't compatible and they've had some sort of reaction. Given you were using old cans, I'd suggest the latter is quite likely. Oh and sneaky edit - if you're using spray cans I'd highly suggest giving 2k a go. It'll cost more but will give a better durability over time.

This makes sense, as I did apply the clear coat heavy. Thank you!

I'm not a paint expert but I've seen some of my painted items, especially things like aluminum that can expand and contract a lot experience weird behavior in very cold temps with regard to paint.

WERE the slots cracked before?🤔 Chrome/aluminum paint oxides faster than a lot of colors. They just don't hold up as well. U brushed the black, not sprayed (a heavier coat). Being your neighbor (PA), we had a HOT summer. Saying all of this, such attention to details.👍🙌 Looks really nice. Using a (filler) primer was a great idea. Maybe several coats followed by sanding? I wonder if 4k clear would help? One more thing. I would of wiped wheels with isobuprol (sp?) alcohol before painting. Love Toyotas & yours is in great shape! 👍✊🖖🇺🇸

There was no cracking in the surface before painting, just some heavy corrosion that was all removed after blasting. I did apply several coats of filler to build up the primer in the low areas where the nicks were, and then sanded it smooth. The original plan was to use 2K clear, but then I read that 2k clear may not lay down well over enamel paint, so I went with the enamel clear. I'll have to go back and watch the original video... I honestly can't remember what I used to wipe down the wheels before applying the primer and paint. I know I didn't have isobuprol alcohol, but I might have used wax & grease remover. Either way, it was a good learning experience and they still look good from a few feet away :)

I'm betting all the soap didn't come off. You should always wipe with a mineral spirit or rubbing alcohol after. It looks like something didn't agree. Either primer, paint or clear coat. Not sure how much time you left each layer to cure. I've had this happen before. Honestly they look great from 5 feet so I wouldn't worry about it.

I'll have to go back and watch the original video... I honestly can't remember what I used to wipe down the wheels before applying the primer and paint. I might have used wax & grease remover. I did follow the instructions on drying time between coats, but now that I think about it, it was August in Ohio (hot and humid) and the clear coats might have been on the heavy side... so I may have needed additional time to let them cure. I'm still happy with the way they look on the 80 :)
