SPOKES AND RIMS - BMW AIRHEAD R60/5

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I'll share with you how to remove spokes from a wheel assembly and how to polish an outer aluminum rim. Before I'm able to reassemble this rim with new spokes and nipples, it's important that I disassemble the old components correctly. This involves removing the nipples evenly around the perimeter of the wheel, so the rim does not get damaged. If you decide to do this yourself, I highly recommend you purchase a proper spoke wrench tool!
Once the spokes and nipples are removed I can look forward to reconditioning the hub and the rim itself. Since the rim is made of aluminum, I can easily sand and polish out the blemishes from the past 50 years. Both rims are still in very good condition and I'm very with the overall condition.
To remove the scratches I will sand with 220-Grit all the way down to 1000grit. Once the surface is even and scuffed all the way around I will start to use the bench buffer I picked up at princess auto.
With different polishing compounds ranging from coarse to fine, I have the ability to achieve a mirror-like finish! Stay tuned until the end to view the results!!
If this video was helpful in any way, I'd appreciate it if you hit that like button and if you want to be one of the first to see the assembly video, be sure to subscribe!

I never worked on spokes but with your tutorial videos everything looks so easy. Great job man, the rim looks AMAZING! I can't wait to see this project come together soon.

Maybe you‘ll find a project with spoke rims one day and you can rebuild them yourself!😎 Thanks Matthew, the rims turned out better than I expected. I‘ll have more updates very soon. Stay tuned😁🤙🏽

Thanks for your feedback😃👍🏽 My goal is to try and do everything myself on this motorcycle restoration. From the paint job to the mechanical work! This is very time consuming and one needs many tools, but I’m up for this challenge😎 I‘m happy to hear that you enjoy these videos and thanks for always leaving a comment. It‘s much appreciated!! -Andreas

Right back at the start you said about the pistons being offset. I noticed the spoxe on the wheels are too. I'd never noticed this but checked my mountain bike and sure enough that's how wheels are. Never noticed it before. Also never seen the power tool brand subscribe before!

That is right, the engine is set up in a way that you have two cylinders opposed from each other, but offset. This makes the engine longer and, but its cheaper to manufacture them this way. Correct, spokes are offset too and some wheels have a very noticeable offset! There are many details when it comes to mechanical components and the way they were designed. This power tool is actually made by Black and Decker, but the sticker fell off...so I added a little touch to it.

I was wondering if some type of coating would be needed to keep the rims shiny in the future. As always- great job.

This is a big thing and there are many companies that advertise they have the perfect coating for polished parts…but in reality nothing holds up, or at least not for a long time. Many car owners get their rims coated with 2k clear coat or even clear powder coat, but it starts to flake within a short period of time. Worst of all, it tends to „yellow“ even quicker on polished parts. I‘ve been reading a lot about this topic, but I haven‘t been convinced about the options that are out there. The best is to maintain your polished parts by keeping them dry and wiping a little bit of Mother‘s hand polish onto them from time to time.

Bravo! I have to admit to using the angle grinder recently but in my case the rims and spokes were toasty rust and I replaced both. You've captured the process of the polishing process very nicely.

Thank you very much Richard! If you didn‘t reuse the rims then it‘s not as bad. The only issue is that if you cut through the spokes, the rim will deform and possibly crack...and nobody wants that happening! I‘m glad you replaced both spokes and rims😃👍🏽 I tried my best to share this lengthy process in short. It takes quite some time to polish these rims, but the end result is well worth it! Thanks for tuning in. Regards Andreas

@@WorkshopRebuild exactly, this was for my Honda 360 project with new chrome rims and new spokes, so all good now. Polishing intricate components like engine cases/covers is very challenging.

That‘s a very nice looking bike. New chrome rims and spokes must look impressive! I haven‘t done polished engine components before, but I can understand how time consuming that must be!! Maybe I‘ll have the opportunity to build a custom bike in the future and then I can test some neat modifications. How many bikes do you have Richard?

Have you tried to clean the dirt/grease from polishing the rim with a mix of hot water some dish soap and a little bit of ammonia? It stinks but is efective.

Hello Jan, thank you for asking this question! Up until this day, I have not tried the cleaning solution you wrote in the comment above. Does this work best for bare aluminum or can this be used on alternative metal surfaces? Regards Andreas
