I Fixed The BMW R60/5 Rocker Arm Issue!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Conquering the challenge of the BMW R60/5 rocker arm assembly was a journey, but triumph awaits!
The older style of the BMW /5 rocker arm still utilizes a bronze bushing as a bearing surface between the rocker arm shaft and the rocker arm itself. In theory, this is a great way of holding tight tolerances and keeping a valve train nice and sound...that's if it all goes well.
In my case, I received some really questionable parts from Germany that had various flaws in them. From poor quality finishes to being out-of-round and even being out of tolerance by and few thousandths of an inch!
In this video, I explain why I decided to modify the rocker arm bushings to achieve a tighter fit on the top end of the engine.
If this video was helpful in any way, I'd appreciate it if you hit that like button and if you want to be one of the first to see the assembly video, be sure to subscribe!

I was picking at my 60/5 this evening. Your videos are super comprehensive. The quality issues you are discovering with "new" stuff is scaring me. Buying "new" parts only to discover they are worse than used originals....... Glad you are catching this stuff.

Your local machine shop honed those bushings really well! I cannot wait to see the engine assembly in the next video 😎👍🏻

I fully agree with you on that! The previous bushings were horrible compared to these (HAHA)! You won't have to wait very long...the engine rebuild video is just around the corner:) Thanks for watching and leaving a comment

Another great video, thank you. The later model rockers did away with the o-rings under the rocker arm posts. In your next video could you explain how the oil passage path on your original rockers work?

Thank you, Allan! Yes that is correct, the made small changes to the too end of the newer engines and in a future video I‘ll get to that. In the upcoming assembly video I’ll discuss the whole lubrication system. This will include the oil pump, oil filter, bypass valve, pressure relief valve and lastly how the oil flows to the cylinder heads (rocker arms). I hope you will find this beneficial. Regards Andreas

Thank you, Stew! It took a while to reach this stage, but I can now confidently say that the parts I'm assembling meet the specifications outlined in the service manual. Stay tuned for the upcoming engine assembly video😊👍🏽 Regards Andreas

Hi there! The valve guides were replaced by my local machine shop. and honed for brand new valves. The valve guides are fairly thin-walled, but you can heat up the cylinder head to roughly 180°C and drive them out with a punch. I will share more about this topic during the engine assembly video. Coming soon. Cheers

I'm glad you got the quality that you paid for this time. The stuff you got from Germany loox like it has rifling inside it up against the parts that yuve managed to source out online and have machined locally. I presume yuve had snow already as my relations in Winnipeg already have but I bet you can't wait to try the finished bike out!!

I'm very happy with the parts I received and somewhat lucky they weren't of the same quality as the ones from Germany. I had to cross my fingers while ordering because both sellers could only confirm they were OEM parts without providing rocker arm shaft sizes. My local machine shop did a great job with the bushings, and I'm pleased I could resolve this issue. I would love to find some older machines to assist with repairs like this in the future and would do the work myself. We already had snow here about a month ago, and it slowly melted off due to warmer days. Since then, we've only had cold nights without any snowfall. It's too cold for the riding season, but I'm sure I'll enjoy this bike next season. I can't wait to have this bike on the road! Have a wonderful day, Simon! Cheers.

Thanks a lot man 😀 I'm sitting on so many parts it's not even funny! In the next few episodes the bike will take shape and it should be back on both wheels. It'll definitely be a fun ride and I cannot wait to share the footage with you. Thank you for your support!! Cheers

Mate the parts you received from Germany were junk and I hope you were able to get a full refund. The work you showcased in this video truly demonstrates outstanding craftsmanship and metiulous attention to detail. I'm looking forward to the engine assembly video!

Yes you are right. The parts were well out of the factory specifications and could not be used for the engine rebuild I am doing. I did receive a full refund...but I had to return the parts, which I did not get refunded for. Thank you for your kind words! I will continue to create more videos like this and offer as much information as possible. Regards Andreas

Great question Diogo! I do not have an update on the Renault R5 at this moment, as I really want want to finish the BMW R60/5. In the next few weeks, I will have multiple videos about the BMW, because it will soon be done. After that I will invest time in the Renault. Regards Andreas😊👍🏽
