Gender and sexuality are two different things, you can be a trans woman and be whatever sexuality you want. Like if you were labelled as a het “man” you would become a lesbian when you come out as trans because, you know, you’re a woman. Sexuality does this shift, another example, a “girl” comes out as a trans man and they were initially attracted to women before they came out, they would’ve probably identified as a lesbian but when they come out as trans, they become het because they’re a man. Also, for some, sexuality is a bit fluid, you know? They might figure it out later in life or they might hop from one or another for a while, that’s totally okay. Anyways, I’m a gay trans man, the bi dorian/sera mods make me uncomfortable. I wouldn’t want to download it because it kinda feels like taking away representation that is needed in video games. I’ve always enjoyed the gay romances when they’re available. I loved the Dorian romance and I think it’s a bit odd to do the bi dorian mod when his personal arc is about him being gay. Why not just make another character? I do that whenever I want to try a different romance. Lastly, the person downloading said mod doesn’t make it more “valid” just because of the person downloading it is whatever gender or sexual minority. I do definitely feel like the mod isn’t for everyone and if you don’t like it don’t download it. Love your podcast btw!

I somewhat understand the point you are making in representation but i must say that i cannot understand how a mod can make you uncomfortable. By its very nature it is a mod, a player made addition that is by no means cannon or vanilla. By the logic you are presenting that means that mods like Bi-Cassandra should also make you uncomfortable. but at the end you are correct in saying if you dont like it dont download it.

It doesn't take away any representation, because it is a mod. In fact, it gives representation when the devs aren't giving atention to every one, even though a mod is limited in terms of continuity. Personaly, I don't like this types of mods, it's kinda rewriting history. The characters are what they are, and changing them to suit wharever reason I might have kinda spoils it for me. I also really like charachters with defined sexuallity without trying to apeal to everyone, it gives them more personality, like its something that make them more real and its part of who they are. In DA 2 everyone was bi so it had little meaning.

I understand the feeling. Personally, I don't like seeing them because I feel like a mod to, example, romance Dorian as a female Inquisitor just takes away from who Dorian is. A huge part of his companion quest is about him being gay and downright refusing to marry the girl his parents had picked out, and modding him bi just... I feel like it kind of devalues him. Honestly, I think people can play whatever mods they want, but I don't like stumbling across them on KZread by accident. If someone feels so desperately that they have to post a video of their bi-mods, they need to at least title it properly so people who don't WANT to watch them know what it is before they watch the video. Edit as I've finished the video: I don't like the Bi-Cullen or Bi-Cassandra(I didn't even know that was a thing until today) mods either, since that matters to a lot of people.

@@sraeerhsr7485 it's uncomfortable because it's fetishizing a gay character and using them as a masturbatory tool without their consent. it doesn't matter that they're fictional, their personhood exists in the story, and their person is identified a certain way which means that is who they are. using people as masturbatory tools for your own selfish purposes is antisocial and it's gross, to say the very LEAST about this subject. it's natural to be made uncomfortable by that. you have to be seriously disconnected from your humanity not to be uncomfortable by dehumanizing sexuality. "fan" culture is absolutely revolting when it comes to using fictional people - AND REAL people - as tools to selfishly and grossly whack off to.

I am a retired community health worker and I got into dragon age series many years ago and played the series many times even all the dlcs many times. This became handy when I was caring for a young girl who resided in a group home. She was paralyzed from the waist down and had many health issues. She was very into the series and she shunned everyone who cared for her or resided with her in the home. One day I walked into her room and she was playing dragon age origins. I started talking to her about the series and offered to lend her my disk for awakening and dragon age 2. Later I brought in my xbox 360 so she could play all the dlcs as well. She got the other residents who were her age to play as well. Her family bought her the games later and I tell you running around Fereldan falling in love and everything else meant a lot to her. She also spent hours talking about the game with other interested friends. I hear she has a gaming computer now and everything. Immersive game play in games is VERY IMPORTANT for him an beings even finished are not restricted to a wheel chair. For me it was a play ground like no other. There should be more games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

I've listened to this a couple times, and at one point it's said that Solas doesn't choose you, but later you guys talk about how it would be a good idea to have a romance where you're forced to choose your love or your mission. And you lean toward the more responsible "I love you, but I have to do what's best for everyone else", and that's exactly what Solas did. In his eyes, it is Levellan or the entirety of his people. But, you talk about Solas choosing to leave you in a negative way, even though he chose what you describe as the more responsible choice. I just think it's interesting how opinions change when one is on the receiving end of harsh realities. Just food for thought, love listening to these podcasts, keep up the good work!

I take a very different view of Solas. At best Solas is a child struggling to make sense of a scary and novel world at worst he is an egotist who's own needs invalids the hopes, society and even existence of others. Even the Dalish and the culture they have created for themselves he see contemptuously. What Solas does wonderfully is illustrate how someone evil isn't devoid of positive traits and can be easy to befriend if you ignore their boarder feelings, like in the real world.

I don't think that him choosing his cause is wrong, in fact I think that his dedication to his ideals is what makes him so compelling. I think what hurts most is that he does make you an accessory to his goal of destroying your world. You unwillingly and unwittingly help him in achieving mass genocide over the people you put your life on the line to save. That fucked with my feelings.

Zain Hartono no he doesn’t WANT to. He wants to save his people and bring them back to where they were, but the only way to do that in his eyes is to tear down the veil. He sees it as fixing a mistake. He doesn’t want to kill anyone, but he feels that if he does nothing then he’s just letting the elven people suffer more. He created the veil to stop the false gods and free the eleven people from slavery, but that happened anyway. Lavellan is the only one who gets so close to him that he feels that if he stays with her she might convince him to stop. And that’s important because it shows that a part of him doesn’t want to do this, and wants to be stopped.

Isabela actually doesn't have an open relationship with Hawke if you take it all the way past Act 3 (iirc, played Isabela romance a month ago). Act 2, she doesn't claim to be exclusive, says it's 'just a bit of fun' (paraphrasing). If you continue romancing her she actually falls in love with Hawke, and you can headcanon if the relationship is open past that. Part of Isabela's character growth is actually getting over her commitment issues (depending on how you play it).

I couldn't disagree more about hardening Alistair, I think it was atrociously done. The idea in itself is pretty good, like hey if you toughen Alistair up you can make him a better leader, raise his confidence etc. But in execution it is literally "hey your best friend and basically brother at this point is devastated and emotionally vulnerable, don't you want to shit on his day and tell him everyone is a selfish dickhead out for themselves, which basically undermines everything you've told him about being friends and being there for each other up to this point?" This is so stupid and ridiculous, you literally have to be a sociopath to pick that option without the meta game knowledge, that for some fucking reason it makes Alistair a better King. If anything saying this to him should have been the option that led to him being a bitter drunk. The best comment I've heard on the subject was by a youtuber who said "I can't do this to Alistair, because if someone said that to me a few years ago I wouldn't be here right now."

Why are bioware romances so popular? Jordan and Caitie: Deep meaningful stuff Me: SHIIIIP WAAAARS! 41:02 Also if you break up with Solas in trespasser the guy drops you down to friend level faster than lightning so I don't think breaking up with him later is going to force him to give up his plans unless in some way you force him to kill you himself or some other scenario. But that's just me.

This was a really interesting podcast. I must say I full body flinched when you said you'd like a romantic interest to die without a way to save them. The only character I could see that happening with would be Solas and just... it would probably be my Inquisitor killing him then! Gah! If that happened, I fully demand a Romeo and Juliette kind of ending, because with the backstory I have given my Inquisitor there is absolutely no way she wouldn't follow Solas wherever - including wherever dead people go in those games. She might kill him to save the world, but she'd not want to live without him! That being said, I thought romance can sometimes be a great tool to bring home a point to the player. I remember when I played Origins, I was an elven mage and had absolutely no understanding of any of the issues in the world. Sure, some people called me names for being an elf but aside from that I didn't *seem* to have any limitations. (incidentally I also didn't have issues with the circle at first, because it seemed just like your average fantasy mage tower for me. totally didn't understand the implications until DA2) Anyway, when Alistair told me we couldn't be together if he was king because I was an elf I had such a "Wait, what?!" moment, I can't even describe it. Like, it hadn't even occurred to me. Sure, the odd elven slur had been annoying, but it had just been that. Now here I was and even the person who supposedly loved me was telling me I wasn't good enough. Good enough to save the world? Sure! But to be queen? Sorry, but nope. And of course because I knew nothing, I hadn't hardened him and we broke up and I was a mess (somewhat of a recurring theme for my DA romances). But I'm just saying when used to explain concepts, there are few things more powerful than a romance.

I agree about Lavellan being pissed at a romanced Solas. DA4 was my first Bioware game and I had a relationship with the Dread Wolf in my first play through - and every other one for that matter, couldn't bring myself not to at least initiate the relationship although I did leave him for Cullen in my second, which only made me feel guilty because I knew my inquisitor really just wanted to figure out a way to be with Solas. It really opened my eyes to my real life behavior toward romance. Looking back, I saw how there were so many signs that something was suspiciously wrong with our interactions, but I casually brushed all of it aside - the heart wants what the heart wants. Like Caitie, I really couldn't accept that there was no way to make him stay. After the events of Trespasser, that's when it all hit me. How cruel he had been to me, leading me on while knowing full well the power of the anchor was slowly killing me. No matter the feelings he claimed to have had for me, he continued to use me to advance his plan and justified it to himself. I felt like I hadn't stopped the bad guy (Corypheus) but had, in fact enabled him and assisted him in his cause. If Solas succeeded in destroying the world, he would have done so with the benefit of my help. That's what made me want to stop him so bad. Part of me still sees him as a misguided dreamer with the best of intentions. That part of me still hopes to convince him of the errors of his ways. He is, after all, absolutely brilliant - lest we forget, a God - and to see him fail so badly is just so tragic. But I also see how that's the same naive outlook that brought me to overlook how shady he was. He's taken so much from my Inquisitor, so I think she (I) feels like she can't let him take any more, and that's why, no matter how powerful he is, if he has to be destroyed, she needs to be the one to do it. Especially, since, she still loves him deeply and empathizes with his cause. I see Caitie's point about Lavellan sacrificing herself emotionally, but in my case, I don't think my Inquisitor has any other choice, a part of her will always be invested whether she lives on after defeating him. Which is why I hope that - in the spirit of tragedy - if Solas must inevitably be destroyed, let it be by her hand, and let her die along with him. Ahah ok I've written enough drama at this point. Sorry for the rant.

I suppose the reason that I preferred Solas over Blackwall has to do more of how they interact with my Inquisitor. Solas is often more of a teacher, mentor that builds more towards a mutual respect. Solas' admiration nearly pulls him enough to sway away from a goal he's held since awakening. Blackwall begins as a follower that admires the symbol of the Inquisitor, and maintains that admiration of the 'herald' more than the person for some time. Once the DLC emerged, and I understood Solas destroyed a civilization ( almost like a mirror of Anders ) because of the murder of his friend, and freedom for the slaves I found that more noble.

Anora and Cousland don't have a wedding in-game, but there is an epilogue slide that says they have one six months after the Blight, right before the start of Awakening. As for Solas vs Blackwall, personally I feel like the difference is a line in Trespasser that Solas says. "I would not lay with you under false pretenses." Solas would not take you to bed while he knew he was lying to you. He also breaks it off BEFORE leaving. Blackwall, on the other hand, lies to you, sleeps with you(if you let him), and then runs away from the Inquisition and is willing to accept his fate(execution). He's willing to DIE without telling you the truth. Granted, it takes two years, a Qunari anarchist plot, and another near death experience before Solas tells you the truth. Despite everything, Solas does get brownie points from me for not sleeping with Lavellan and then running off.

As a fellow Solasmancer, I must say I don't get you on the aspect of what makes Solas more appealing to people. I'm absolutly not trying to imply you are wrong and I am right but I totally went for Solas in my first playthrough in a moment when I was still thinking he is some forest hobo and when I planned to romance someone else, actually thinking he's so ugly (which by some magic has changed so much since then) and probably boring, put in the game just to explain stuff to us players and add mage balance. I was getting the weirdest feelings in my life while listening to how he interacts with others. I remember myself literally thinking (though not in english) "Omg, I've never agreed with someone so much in my entire life!" In fact, I was wondering if he's not perhaps programmed to approve to whatever action player takes because no matter what i was always getting *Solas x approves. The first fade kiss and I was totally done. For life. Because I've never fell in love before ever. And this is super weird but this romace somehow unlocked this option for me in real life. Like the entire spectrum of experience I wasnt aware exists. Even love songs on the radio suddenly started making sense. I know I'm an extreme example but it's true. Btw. I remember how shocked and confused I was after the end credits back then and it was so weird that it was clear to others that something's happend and I just couldn't say because how does anyone relate to me then? xd As an end note, I'm not bitter that Solas choose his mission over "me". Aren't you guys the ones who criticised other characters for not being their own pepople and leaning on us too much? I'm sure that you subconciously understand that there are still more important things in life than romance. For Solas it's like betraying his entire civilization (not just as a future concept but there are dozens of other ancient elves out there as well) and himself over ONE woman. I would be actually disappointed with him If he would choose " me" over these more important things. What Blackwall is going through is different on many levels but I won't dwell on that because this comment is already too long.

My problem with a lot of the ideas thrown out in this for future romances is the futility. A lot of games don’t focus on the darker sides of relationships (or mostly don’t end on the darker side) because it’s too real. Life itself is incredibly futile in enough ways and it’s incredibly frustrating when our sources of escapism is too much a mirror of reality. We want that one true relationship to just work out in the end, even if in real life it wouldn’t because it wouldn’t in real life. And this reaches farther than just romantic storytelling. It’s the whole deal. Yes we want a realistic and satisfying ending but one that gives hope to our lives instead of reminding us of our impending dirt nap.

Watching this podcast right now but I feel the same. Of course I love real complexity in romances, but I also crave and love the fantastical cheesy elements in said romances. I suppose it depends on how people immerse themselves but I don’t mind loving/obsessing the relationship over the character since I enjoy the dynamics as a watcher. Lessons are good and nice, but I just want to play a fantasy game and entertain the explorable drama that is solavellan rather than feel like I’m under a moral obligation to shape it a certain way to be justified as good. The ability to choose is what makes the romances, and moreso games, unique. In that instant, we know what we are doing and what we’re getting ourselves into. Solas insists in every romantic scene “We shouldn’t/It’s not best/etc.” so when he inevitably dumps up, those who like it know what they’re getting into and the unfortunate that didn’t, can take it a bit more well with the forewarning.

Depending on how inheritance to the throne works Kieran would NOT be a direct heir to the throne. That's what King/prince consort means. Is the half of the royal couple that doesn't provide the bloodline. Two things to consider: First Anora was queen consort but thru political maneuvering got crown Queen. So how thing works on theory an how they work on practice tend to not be the same with any monarchy Secondly: The Cousland are the highest houses in Ferelden second only to the Theirin so I guess one could made an argument for Kieran being are heir after all but one would need either good political maneuvering or having a whole host of dead nobles (probably). The whole landsmeet is odd when compare to the real world my money is that one way or another the ruler of Ferelden won't have an heir. If the games go far enough into the future I wouldn't be surprise if we see Teagan's or Fergus descendants taking the throne or something like that. EDIT: Of course if Kieran is Aliastair son then yes he would have a stronger claim to the throne.

I was going to bring this up too but also add that SPOILERS for the The Silent Grove comic: the Theirin bloodline has dragon blood. So Alistair and Kieran, if he is Alistair's son, also has dragon blood. Of course, considering what happens with Kieran in Inquisition, this is most likely not relevant anymore but who knows.

All Ferelden monarchs are elected by the banns in the Landsmeet. The throne is never inherited by blood. All bloodline does is make someone a more serious candidate to be considered by the banns over those without. Title actually plays a stronger role. Which is why Loghain is favored over Alistair. The throne will likely be given to Fergus or his descendants eventually, as he is the only character who is constant across all possible outcomes.

And then I realized: I used to watch a simmer called Quxxn who played the Sims, and her voice is quite similar to yours. She died a few years ago- after a complication from a surgery. But when you say certain things, you sound so much like her. I have to disagree on the point that Morrigan is a better romance than Alistair. My first playthrough when I found out that I would either die or be forced to let Morrigan sleep with Alistair I started screaming. She said I was like a sister but then I had to hook them up. It really complicated issues in an interesting way that a male Cousland didn't need to face. Also I'm crazy bias for my cheese boi!

I had a similar reaction when I first played the game as well- I was honestly very upset with Morrigan for just jumping it on you, and planned to stab her in Witch Hunt when I got to that point. I think the only thing that stopped me from doing so was the time it took me to actually get the DLC allowed me to stop and think about it a bit. That being said, so while the Alistair romance might have left a more emotional impact on me than Morrigan's- I tried to define 'best romance' as one that impacted the story the most- and Morrigan's Son and her relationship with Flemeth/Mythal won out to me. But I do love the Cheese boi.

I never got why so many ppl prefer Merrill’s rivalry romance to her friendship romance. From my first playthrough I read her story as sb who gets belittled and treated like a child by the people around her. Her clan and her keeper die because they make decisions without considering Merrill’s knowledge and pov. Merrill comes to Hawke about that demon saying “he could help me but I KNOW he can be danger. Please help me in case sth goes wrong.” And then you get there and the keeper is basically like “you stupid child, you don’t know anything”. The friendship romance has the feeling of Hawke being the only person who sees Merrill for who she really is, with all her layers.

It's funny how you say you'd like to see a character cheated on, because in my first playthrough my inquisitor romanced Blackwall and that's what I thought was going on. I think in the beginning Blackwall tells you he's not a good man or something like that ( and I just had finished DAII with Ander saying pretty much the same thing so I was wary), and I often had Cole in the party so I knew there was something shady with him. For (at least) half of the game, I was sure Blackwall had a wife and kids somewhere waiting for him, and my poor Lavellan was just waiting for him to come clean since you can't confront him nor leave him before the revelation. I didn't expect the truth to be what it was, I was pissed but I was happy because, again, Bioware had successfully surprised me. Also, about the break up thing, Alistair broke up with my Cousland and then he killed the archdemon instead of my warden, I was heartbroken. And about Garrus, the romance really adds something, because romance or not, Garrus is Shepard's best friend, they compete with each other, they tease each other, they support each other, but when your romance him, you can see behind his smugness , you can see the hurt and make it better, he lowers his guard to let Shepard in his life. You get to see that he's not just banters and vengeance, he's deeply human and needs approval like everyone else. I love Garrus, I could go on and on about him.

I’m so excited when y’all do these every month. This one is great, and I so agree about the conflict in relationship part. My Hawke would have been utterly shocked by Anders’ action, but more that he felt lied to simply because Anders didn’t let him know why. He would have helped Anders if asked, honestly. I think it would be tense for a while, but my Hawke would help Anders after that in any way possible through the impending conflict, dealing with Justice/Vengence, and through the Calling.

Somewhere, I saw someone raise the point that a relationship with Sera is abusive, because if you're (especially a Lavellan) player who believes in Elven gods and if you drink from the Well of Sorrows, Sera basically says "Tell me that you don't believe in that stuff or we are breaking up", so in that way, the point was that she's trying to manipulate/ force the Inquisitor to change their mind. I kinda feel it's different - even though Sera's character is kind of a "manic murder pixie girl", it doesn't make sense to be in a relationship with someone whose beliefs are so much in strife with your own. I feel like breaking up is the right choice there, and I feel that in a real situation, an "Elven glory" Inquisitor would never start a relationship with Sera anyway - it's just so obvious that the two don't mesh. I'd love to hear people's thoughts on this, since I have no friends to discuss this with 😅

I played DA2 upon release, and I chose to romance Anders(only because they didn't have Nathaniel Howe as an option). I got 2/3 the way through the final act and deleted that playthrough. The way Anders started shutting Hawke out, and the whole manner in which he related to the whole party ( the hiding things, etc.) was too traumatic to me as a player. I have been cheated on in my real life relationship, and that behavior was much too similar. I think that Bioware is maybe too good at the realism thing for some people. ( I finally did an Anders!mance play through after refinancing Fenris , and was much more comfortable finishing the romance when i knew what was coming . The only romance that I have completed in Inquisition is Sera (as I prefer to play as F!Dwarves, and the Iron bull is NOT appealing to me, and Blackwall blindsided my first Cadash-which i also deleted). I have a couple of inquisitors running through the Cullen, Solas, and Blackwall romances now, in which i have to use my Trevelyan as a sort of palate cleanser...

59:30 That's how I played my first Dragon Age Origins character. I had taken an oath to fight the darkspawn and die in battle, the duty to rise against the blight superceded romance or friendship or cultural lines. It was one long, grueling heroes walk to the grave, and my warden couldn't bare to bring anyone into it with them, nor had the time to ignore duty for idle pleasures. It's why the blight only lasted a year in my head canon, and why the ultimate sacrifice had to happen, it's what it was all for, validate all the sacrifices along the way.

Ultimately Bi mods, don't matter one bit. If you want to use it, go right ahead and feel weird about Dorian. But for the sake of argument it's kind of a part of Cassandra's character that underneath all that armour and her stoic nature she wishes to be courted like a lady, she loves girly romance novels, poetry and flowers. So while not as explicitly part of her story as with Dorian, her being straight is pretty big a part of her character.

So not gonna lie, if my Solas romance Inquisitor doesn't just go up and slap him while telling him to get his head out of his ass I'm gonna be so pissed. Fahan would do it. This is the lady who told Cassandra who was already pointing a sword at her that she needed no weapon to be dangerous. Fahan is a spitfire and angry. She's either dragging him home with his tail between his legs, or he's not welcome back. Given the girl's habit of lashing out I can't see her actually pulling off staying to stop him destroying the world.

I guess that’s because it’s not so much a conflict between Thom and the inquisitor, but more of a conflict INSIDE of Thom. He runs away to finally face justice for his lies and crimes, and he never once tries to justify what he did. He doesn’t justify lying to her either, and is even against the romance in the beginning. Sure he lied to her, but he was lying to himself more.

I think adding more dimension to relationships is important, especially through the lens of growing as a person or character through a story, or life. Romantic relationships come and go in all forms. Sometimes they are intense and exciting but die out quickly, sometimes people are slow about forming a relationship and feeling out what each person wants and needs. And yes, sometimes romance can be born of a friendship and is made stronger by it (I, too married my best friend - a bearded Michael). However often times we out-grow relationships. Or people grow in different ways and thus grow apart. Sometimes it feels easy in the moment to hold onto what was in a relationship vs looking forward to what can be. When that happens, it is time to call it off, because all things change, there's no stopping that. It is harder to endure a break up, no matter how emotionally intense, and be better off in the long term for it. I encourage everyone to keep their personal growth at the forefront of their lives and allow your growth to be part of the strength in a relationship. But if a relationship has stalled, you risk stalling yourself. Rip the band-aid off and move on. The other person will too. I would love to see more types of relationships and options around relationships in the games to come.

I think Solas loves Lavellan but is conflicted with the world he was thrown into. She represents everything he could be but he feels he would also be betraying himself. Its tragic because there are beautiful elements of Solas, he passionate about mages, and elves. He's sympathetic and he is REMORSEFUL. He feels terrible about what he did and wants to fix it but doesn't see the flaws within his ancient woes.

I'm late to the party, but as I am listening again some of your old podcasts (thanks for them by the way. They are wonderful ❤), I thought of just leaving my two cents here: I've played all three dragon age games multiple times (all dlcs included) and I must say I love the romance with Solas so much. It is possibly even my fave romance in the series, although Zevran, Fenris and Cullen are good ones too. As for the Solas one I like it so much for a few main reasons: 1. Elves, I love elves. Not only in DA, but as a fantasy trope in general. Also my headcanon is that the very first thing that drew miss Lavellan to him at all is this odd sense of familiarity: She is suddenly showed into a situation that is so alien to her and all these humans suddenly call her "the herald of Andraste" aka a figure of a religion she doesn't even believe in and no matter if she tells them she's not holy or anything, they still do it. And then there is this elven apostate hobo who talks with her about elves and magic and spirits and while they do disagree with the topic of elves (especially the dalish) it is still a familiar topic, as is magic and spirits since she is also a mage. Therefore, she feels slightly more comfortable and not so lost and out of place all the time. Also Solas's apostate hobo thing must feel at least a bit familiar to a Lavellan who is more used to live in a forest rather than sleeping in an actual bed inside a house xD 2. All the delicious, delightful angst on both sides. XD Especially since how I see it, Lavellan loses much more than just her arm and a lover during the game. For my Inquisitor Lavellan, she loses both of those, but also her clan, which hits her really hard. She feels extremely heartbroken over the fate of her clan, because she keeps wondering if it is her fault, if she had made a different choice with her advisors, would that have saved her clan. Plus now it is official that she has no home or family to return to once everything is said and done with the Inquisition. Also her faith and the way she saw the world overall is shaken by the end of tresspasser. So much what she knew turned out to be false. My headcanon is that during Inquisition, before the events of Tresspasser, the only person she truly opens up about her feelings is Solas (and Cole, but she doesn't really need to say anything to him for him to know), because she trusts him the most. How I see it, its Solas who helps her to get back on her feet the most, because he truly understands her better than everyone else. So much better than anyone relizes at this point of time. Which makes the whole breakup and "I'm the Dread Wolf and can't tell you" thing all the more sadder, not only for Lavellan but for Solas as well. I'd even say its worse for him. He's been so alone for so long and now he has to push the only person who sees him for who he truly is and actually loves him away for duty's sake. 3. I am super curious how this all affects both of their characters in the future. I love Solas as a character, the writing and voice acting on him is spectacular. I see him in this sort of a delightful gray area, where I honestly cannot agree with him about his goals, but in the same time I can't hate him either as I find him too interesting as character and I am very curious about him. Sometimes I wish we could ask him to explain how his mind works, just like we can do with Cole xD Honestly, I could just listen to him talk for hours xD As for my Lavellan, she is trying to redeem him, not only because she loves him (which she still does, even after everything), but also she believes that what he is up to isn't the right way to do things and will only cause more harm in the end for everyone, elves included. It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for her as well.

Just found this and definitely enjoyed the discussion! Out of all Bioware romances I've played, (Dragon Age & Mass Effect), the ones that hit the hardest were Garrus, Thane, and Solas. Garrus was probably the *happiest* ending, even with the sadness of even the best ME3 ending. Thane being what I had considered the most heartbreaking before DAI due to him dying. But now the Solas romance being so involved, and yes the heart wrenching aspects of the story pulling Solas and Lavellan apart building such interest, I could only wish for some chance of redemption for them in DA4. Though it's not my story at all and no one cares about my input, having some sort of happier ending at least in that relationship aspect would be such a refreshing turn of events from the expected forlorn closure of the story. Being able to let your Inquistor's final conversation choice in the Trespasser DLC with Solas actually mean something in DA4 would be amazing. Just my thoughts on it, SolasxLavellan being able to overcome in the end, because there is waaay too much sadness and in our everyday world and lives. Give love a fighting chance! 💚

I don't see Solas as a tragic figure. He is extremely flawed, but prideful like his name. He didn't start fighting the Evanuris until they killed Mythal and all the tragedy due unto his life is his own doing. He chose to create The Veil because he said in his mind it was the most properly weighed option. HOWEVER, how many times have we seen Solas be wrong about things as a companion? He is not omnipotent. He didn't think corypheous would survive unlocking The Orb, he didn't foresee The Inquisitor being able to handle The Anchor, he didn't really think of current life forms as more than ants with their connection to the Fade severed unless you show him otherwise. Now this is all to say I really enjoy Solas, I think he is one of the greatest set up characters since Loghain, or The Illusive Man, but there is not an ounce of pity for his struggle from any of my inquisitors. If anything the ones that have said " Solas I will redeem you." in my head aren't talking about just trying to turn his character, their goal is to, as in the past, continue to show him the value of the world of Thedas now and what it could be going forward, not try to revert it to some old state of Elven antiquity.

Regarding bi-mod outrage, I do think something missing from the conversation is the fact that bisexuality is its own distinct sexual orientation. Making a gay character Bi isn't the same as making them straight (and vice versa straight to bi vs gay). I feel like a lot of the outrage comes from the fact that each side views bisexuality as other; gay from the straight side and not gay enough from the gay side.

36:11 On the whole preferring Solas to Blackwall, I think it goes back to which is more interesting narratively. Like Alistair versus Morrigan, one's a healthier relationship but the other is more interesting story wise. Blackwall's story wraps up by the end, even if the relationship will have to go through serious growth. Similarly, Cullen is working past drug addiction and prejudice fueled by trauma. That is extremely interesting and grows into a very healthy and supportive relationship. Solas' role as the villain gives a very unique perspective. The fact that he's basically a fountain of knowledge for stuff a lot of fans have questions on makes the conversations interesting as well. Anders starts as mostly healthy relationship but, as his mental state deteriorates, becomes unhealthy. However, Fenris also has a unstable mental state during the story but the actions Anders take start an entire war. Morrigan could be presented as the opposite. Starting as a unserious possibly unhealthy relationship that develops into a loving one. Although it's left a bit up to player interpretation due to the missing 10 years. Morrigan, Anders, and Solas' aren't healthy relationships but they're amazing stories. I don't think Isabela or Zeveran are easily able to have monogamous relationships. Isabela we can see why during DA2 but Zeveran is on the list because even if he's in a relationship with a living warden, he flirts with Hawke and Isabela. He does refuse Isabela if the Warden dies, but it implies he might need a major wake up call to commit in that way. However, I argue Iron Bull could have that type of relationship, mainly because he starts what seems to be a very committed relationship with Dorian if you don't romance either.

53:53 Ever played Life Is Strange before? (SPOILERS) It does just that! The fan community does this thing where we ask the other fan "bae or bay" as in did you save the one you cherish the most or the entire population of Arcadia Bay (minus the bae). It's SUCH A MORALLY CONFLICTING DECISION I STILL FEEL GREAT GUILT WITH EITHER OPTION and I feel like that is what sets the game as one of my favorites, where you need to make such a big decision and accept the dire consequences because of it. I'd love to see that in future Bioware productions, not that they don't have it already but as you said before in the video to have more of the "that's not the way things really are though", that bitter touch of reality when we go into our games looking for a fantasy experience, or for the inexperienced people to go through it. May sound weird but I really enjoy games that twist expectations: trying to save the world and doing what feels morally right sometimes don't work together, or you can't be the hero and the good guy at the same time. idk maybe it's just me :P

The major difference between Solas and Blackwall is that what Blackwall did was outright evil. Solas saved thousands of Elves from slavery and probably saved the entire world; the Evanuris were on the verge of exterminating the Titans (and who KNOWS what that would of done) and had made armies larger than any in modern Thedas. Solas saved the world, and now he wants to finish what he started. He has principles, and is willing to sacrifice himself and his happiness for that. Blackwall regrets what he did not out of a greater humility, but because its truly indefensible. Between the Blights, the status of the Elves, the rise of the Qun... its hard to disagree that the world as is is doomed to ruin, and that the Veil needs to go. The question isn't if it should stay or not, but if there's a way to do so without killing millions. Solas is an anti-villain; he's doing something awful for good reasons. Thom was just an evil man before he met Blackwall. Of course the Solas romance is more popular; he's lost everything to try and save what he can, and he only lied to stay true to his real self; he was Solas first, before the Dread Wolf, and Solas is the part that loves the Inquisitor. The Dread Wolf is the part that knows he must leave her behind. And that is a far greater tragedy than anything Rainer deals with.

I always loved the thought of Kieran being an heir to the throne, especially because there are several options/game states in which that could happen. (If the HoF&Anora rule and if Alistar/Alistair&Anora rule) I would like to see it be mentioned in one of the games, especially if you consider that Alistair doesn't have endless time on the throne, because he's a Grey Warden, so after Inquisition, he'd only have ~20 years left. But in all honesty, I don't see that happening in any of the games, mostly because there are just too many states where Kieran isn't an heir to the throne and since it's such a big thing, who rules Ferelden, I doubt that we'll actually see that in the games, I just always thought it was a nice optio

I don't know if anyone else has already mentioned this since this video was uploaded three years ago, but you two mention wanting a romance option who breaks up with you rather than you ending the relationship: The Iron Bull. If you are supportive of his belief in the Qun and genuine in your relationship, he turns on you in Trespasser and follows the Qun to the death. I, for one, had that oh shit moment of what did I do wrong? Why can't I save my Bull, and ran to the internet to see where I messed up. I think that's a good example of a relationship ending where the rug is kind of pulled out from under you and the love interest ends it rather than the player, and it actually has some good dialogue options as a response to his break-up/betrayal. Just wanted to throw that in the ring, love the content you two. Really enjoying catching up on it in 2021 waiting for DA4.

I actually think Dorian is da version of that but you can only romance him as a male while you can only romance Garrus as a female. 0:08:30 at least it would put Kieran into the position that Alistair is in: since he is a Bastard (aka born outside of marriage), he is not a legitimite heir, unless the head of his House legitimizes him. That would be Earl Eamon in Alistairs case. At least that is common in medieval-christian society, which most of Thedas is very much based on. Thus, Anora's children would have a stronger claim on the throne of Ferelden.

I actually like Sera and find her interesting, but I can't bring myself to romance her thanks to having some bad/violating experiences with women irl (being female myself). Some of that experience is still too fresh for me to even roleplay-participate in a fem-fem relationship right now, but her romance does interest me on some level. 1:13:07 Regarding that topic, one way it might work out is if both of the named optioned happened in the same game. Because how do you fight against someone who thought they were gay turning out to be straight if in the same game, someone who thought they were straight turned out to be gay? It'd definitely be interesting to see.

love the podcast as always! I just wanted to throw my opinion on one thing out there, I realise I'm rather late to the party and thus this might not actually every be read by anyone, but here it is anyways! On the topics of the Bi mods: I don't think they should be banned at all, people can use whichever mods they like! However I also don't think modding a canon gay character to be bi should be viewed the same way as modding a canon straight character to be bi, similar to what you touched upon about hypothetical romances where NPCs break up because they realise you are not the gender they are interested in. In case of the bi mods I agree to the points you raised already, saying how especially for Dorian his sexuality was such an integral part of his plot, and also that queer representation has just relatively recently become more common and every single character is still cherished within the LGBTQ+ community. The problem with the latter specifially is, that bi erasure in real life is still very much a thing, and people telling bi people "it's just a phase" is way too common. Personally I think, that if you wanted to have that situation in a video game (or any other form of media) that media should also include at least one other bi character for whom that is not a phase, so as to not have that as the only "bi" representation in the game. It is sad that it is still necessary to consider these things in depth, I hope some day soon non-straight relationships and trans and nonbinary people will be so normalised within society that we do not have to do a whole debate over representation.

If your interested in an abusive relationship a lot more platonically telltale games the walking dead in the second game Kenny and Clementine’s relationship is pretty bad but it’s also the favorite of a lot of people who played that game. Almost every character in that game tells you get out, get out but a big thing is having memories from the first game that draws you to Kenny.

I’m definitely curious to see if Bioware will ever play up the race relations angle more between a potential interracial relationship in any future Dragon Age game. We’ve seen hints of it in a number of romances thus far but I feel like it’s kind of a missed opportunity especially with the allegorical connections (or coding) for some of the fantasy races in Thedas. It may not be a one-to-one comparison but the representation (good or bad) is at least somewhat present, why not explore it more?

I'm not convinced about Morrigan's assurances, but I did remember Morrigan promising something about not using the 'old god baby' (Keiran) against Ferelden, so I looked it up. "If Alistair is king, he will want to know about the possibility of a bastard heir turning up in later years and challenging for the throne (if he has been told about the child part of the ritual), which Morrigan will assure him won't happen" dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:Morrigan%27s_Ritual

I identify as a gay man who played a male Shepherd. I wanted to romance Samantha Traynor in Mass Effect 3, because she’s a boardgame nerd with good oral hygiene. I found this discussion about bi mods really interesting because I was initially frustrated that I couldn’t romance her (or Alistair in DAO), but I did end up really appreciating the limits Bioware puts on these romance options because it does add a level of reality to the characters that gets you to introspect more, whereas Dragon Age II with Hawke felt too catering/easy. But I like challenge in my games.

I’ve been playing video games for over 20 years and have never played as a male character. When I was a girl I wouldn’t play a game unless I could play a female character. I also don’t tend to use mods, so I never got to romance Morrigan. You’ve inspired me, and I think I’m going to change that today. I’m going to play a male warden. *deep breath*

As far as Bi mods go, one, as a bisexual person, most romances in these stories seem to work way better as same sex in my point of view. Especially the men. I just played as a male Cousland who romanced Alistair and got to experience the lick a lamppole line and his whole personality and story just seem to make more sense. And it was a cool experience my tenth time around in DAO making the first pair of Kings In Fereldan as far as I know. The bias is over the Sera mod is unnecessary. It should be up to the player to experience the story how they feel is the most fun! You guys are right there. I'm playing through now as a Dalish Mage romancing Morrigan, its fun.

and if they did the Bisexual turned straight storyplot, I wouldn't be against it as long as there is plenty of fluid representation otherwise. You can't argue something like that if theres other characters who are fleshed out enough to feel like it isn't something like Bi or Gay erasure.

I just find it ridiculous that people could be so flummoxed by what OTHER people do in THEIR OWN headcannon. Mod if you want, play whatever gender you want, it's like telling someone that they can't be blond when hair dye is available and you'll never see them in person. Just enjoy your own game.

as someone who has been stuck in a verbally abusive relationship before i would rather not find myself romances a character that ends up treating my character like shit, as interesting as it would be, i play romances in games to escape the realism of a relationship and to have that happen would piss me off beyond compare especially if it was a character i liked before chasing the romance, i just don't think its a good idea to make games too realistic adding romances with abuse is a step too far really, at least solas clearly loves the inquisitor i believe there will be a way to save him maybe not in the way we want but i dont think it should purely be we cant save him from himself there needs to be that choice much like in wicked eyes and wicked hearts where evidence you find and court approval determines your level of success and certain endings

When I was playing DAI for the first time, I actually was gunna romance Sera and was a little disappointed to find I couldn't, I could see myself downloading that then. They are video games with fictional characters, personal mods to change YOUR playthrough isn't removing representation for anyone, who cares what's on my version of the game. Thats just me though idk.

I think the reason for the Cassandra bi mod is partly influenced by her reactions to Varric's story of Hawke in DA2. There are times she almost seems to be falling for Hawke, whether Hawke is male or female. This lead a bunch of people to think she would be bi, and if I recall correctly when they first announce the romance options for Inquisition they had her mislabled as bi and quickly changed it.

In real monarchies the children of royal consorts are only heirs if the other parent was the true monarch. As royal consorts don't have a claim to the throne, that's why Prince Phillip (Elizabeth II's husband) isn't in the line of succession.

Solas vs. Blackwall (IMO): Solas is confident; he might be wrong from time to time, but he's confident. Blackwall just walks around whining, worrying whether people like him or not, and trying to lick their backs (it's in his banter mostly). Both of them own their mistakes, yes, but they kinda do it in different ways. Blackwall constantly cries about his bad decisions to anyone who'll listen; he tries to change and do better but, at the same time, he's desperately looking for a pat on the back. Solas makes a decision to fix his mistakes, too, but he doesn't need anyone's approval, and that's that confidence of his. And it's attractive. Solas just seems mentally stronger than Blackwall, for the most part at least.

That is what makes Solas a psychopath and Blackwall an actual human being. And Solas is trying to do the same destructive actions that he did in the past. Solas believes destroying the world is justified. I would rather date someone who admits that they are a coward, than someone who blames someone else for their actions (a.e the 'tyrannical' ancient elves). Also Solas hates the Dalish Elves because they paint him as a villain in their myths....so Solas does care about others approval. Also, if Blackwall cares about others approval he would have never turned himself in. He would have instead let the guy die for his mistake. Solas doesn't care for others. He only cares about his ideological beliefs and the fade. That is at least my opinion.

Watching this now, I have to ask - does Blackwall really have more remorse than Solas? Like Solas's regrets were so strong that they called a regret demon into Skyhold. I think Solas beats himself up constantly for what he's done and what he now thinks he has to do - in fact, he thinks he has to do crazy shit now because of how strongly he regrets his past actions. And I also disagree that he loves Lavellan less than Blackwall would. The scale of the things Blackwall is dealing with is much smaller than for Solas, Blackwall has no way to right his past wrongs besides being with you (basically), and Solas is an ancient being with tons of life experience, for him to allow himself to love Lavellan while knowing he shouldn't and going through all that he's going through, I think it shows how deeply he must love her. We'll see what he chooses in the end - he does seem to be crossing a threshold of no return.
