After all, he was in the second game, and we watched him “rise” out of his prison, we “saw” his power for ourselves. It wasn’t until Inquisition that we got a glimpse of what he really meant. “When he rises, everyone will see” There was a hint in Solas’s skill set as well, the fade walker specialization shows us clearly that he knows how to bend the veil and the fade according to his will, but we were so focused on the strength and the threat posed by Corypheus that we didn’t see it, despite it being right there in our faces all along.

It could be that Sandel is really a literal “Child of the Stone,” a dwarf given life by the Titan to act as a kind of “outward eye.” He could be considered a Titan himself,just like how Kieran could technically be considered an old god.

Actually, to me he never seemed sad for being rescued from the deep roads, he just appeared to be confused because he didn't realize he was in danger at all....maybe he wasn't.

Pretty sure sandal is gone. The main writer certainly had an idea but the 2 most important people for the series quit. All of these small things that were going to big are now forgotten.

I don't think that sandal was sad about "being saved in the deep roads", but that he had to thank Hawke for his/her assistance when he really didnt need it. Sandal, who we've seen to have enormous power and perhaps intellect, is still being treated as a child.

MrKillerman157 Riight thats the one thing i disliked was that everyone completely ignored the obviously clues of his power ... that being the fact that he's always the last one standing in the corner of the room full of Darkspawn corpses! And although he may sound weird THAT could JUST be a speech impediment ... and NOT a sign of low intelligence, ESPECIALLY because he's shown to have great knowledge of things although we can witness his capabilities from OUR perspective ... while EVERYONE IN FUCKING THEDAS thinks he's a handicapped dwarf .... :/

I still think Sandal is from a Titan settlement like the one in Descent. He was sad to be "saved" from the Deep Roads because, as much as he loves Bodhan, he wants to go home.

All hail the true hero of the Dragon Age: Sandal.

I believe Sandal was sad due to the fact that he was never saved he was actually the one who killed all the darkspawn time and time again, and when pressured into saying thank you to Hawke he couldn't articulate this and knew Bodahn wouldn't believe him even if he could say what really happened. (A parent not believing their child tends to hurt)

So, I think the errors in DA 2 can be explained fairly simply. Varic is telling the story to Lelianna and Cassandra. It is played by us, but within the story he is narrating. His answers are a different version of what appears in the tale of the Champion. Varic bulls hits when he doesn't know the answer or finds the real story unimpressive.

5:05 - I suspected that Sandal's sadness was guilt from making Bodahn worry. After all he's not really upset when you find him, rather its only when he's back in camp and reunited with Bohdahn that he shows signs of sadness.

I hope Bioware manages to squeeze Sandal and Bodahn into DA4 somehow. Sandal's voice is adorable XD Also, I think the old lady he was talking about was Flemeth. It's the only old lady with a scary laugh I can think about. And I think the prophecy had something to do with Solas. Because; "All the magic will come back": Solas plans to bring back the elven race and the ancient elves could all use magic. "Everyone will be just like they were": The ancient elves will return the way they were before they fell. "The shadows will part, and the skies will open wide": I'm not sure about this part but I think it has something to do with the veil breaking and the evanuris coming back or something like that. "When he rises everyone will see": I think that's Solas. Because in the epilogue of Trespasser they say a lot of the elves suddenly left. Probably going to Solas or something.

Sandal has a huge role to play. He literally predicts the Dread Wolf returning. And Flemeth visits him? That's no coincidence. He will help stop Solas.

A note here: Solas plans to break the veil and open the fade. That would directly link the world with the fade thus rendering magic everywhere and everyone would be able to use it, even dwarves. She covers this in another episode on Solas. Sandal is suggesting that Solas will succeed. The veil will be no more. Everyone will be linked with the fade, as they always were before Solas created the veil. That is what sandal means in my opinion.

6:44 I just realized Sandal had a premonition of the events in Inquisition.

Sandal's prophecy always seemed odd to me until I played Inquisition with a heavy emphasis on Trespasser. Taking into account Solas's plan. We may actually see Sandal's prophecy come true.

Having played "The Descent" again, I would support the theory that Sandal belongs to the Sha-Brytol race. He has bright blue eyes like them, an affinity for lyrium/runes/enchantments and can manifest lyrium-related powers. He also doesn't talk too much, just like the Sha-Brytol.

I believe Sandal has been confirmed to be a Mage... There's this mobile game called Heroes of Dragon Age and there Sandal has the "mage" tag. That shouldn't be proof enough, right? But the thing is, every character that appears in that game has to get approval from BioWare (that's why there are no Griffons there, but Isseya is there). And "mage" is not an unimportant tag like Orlesian (that gets added or removed from certain heroes like DAI's High Dragons, it's kind of a big deal... There were even some events that provided X buff to Warrior Dwarves, Y buff to Rogue Dwarves and Z buff to THE dwarf Mage... I don't think it's crazy to see the possibility, he doesn't need to be a god to be a different dwarf. Perhaps he is just mentally challenged and he can't connect to the Stone and that's how he has magical talent... Remember that Cole said Templars and Dwarves connect to something greater and that's why they block magic...

The thing is: I heard that Sandal is half-elven. IF he is, if and when Solas rips down the Veil and elves start getting their magic and immortality back, will Sandal become the first Dwarven mage. I thought this also: It is going to be VERY interesting when someone like Fenris gets magic! THAT would be really ironic!

Kieran is slow, he's like 10 years old and speaks like he's 3... And he has the soul of an old god. Sandal is slow too... We know that old god souls can pass from one person to another (Flemeth and her daughters), so it's not at all an unlikely theory that he has the soul of an old god too. I think there are only two possibilities... 1) Old god soul. 2) Connected with a Titan (just like Valta).

Some say that he is the spawn of a night of unholy passion between a dwarf king, an elven god and the divine. *insert x-files song here*

My theory: Sandal is like Cole. DA writers have shown a propensity towards evolving character types using new characters. Ex.: Anders evolved into Solas. Inspect Sandal and Cole and they are both young, blond and on the spectrum. Since Sandal came first, it stands to reason that Cole is his evolved version, a character the writers could start anew after dead-ending Sandal. Thus, the theory Sandal is a spirit who manifested as a dwarf because Bodahn wanted a son. It explains pretty much everything, including how he came out of nowhere in the Deep Roads. I still believe your last theory is true, as well.

I had this thought when playing Trespasser. When the four demon librarians show up in the crossroads, Cole just greets them with a happy, mindless "'ello!" sounding so much like Sandal that I thought he was there for a second.

the half-elf thing makes sense with that solas prophecy he gave... he's so in touch with magic he can sense solas's rise

I think the "old lady with a scary laugh" is/was Flemythal.

Sandal is what Shaper Valta has become. Yup best Theory .. Old Lady with evil laugh is Flemeth. Yup got to be.. But why did Flemeth visited Sandal? All touched by Titan? Valta remarks " The Titan wants me to know. No, more than that. It wants me to understand. There is a loneliness to its song ".

It amuses me greatly to think of Flemythal standing over Sandal’s bed and observing what June has become ... and laughing. I wonder if she just leaves him alone then because being trapped in a dwarf body, incapable of magic, is punishment enough?

Came back to say that there's a pretty simple explanation for Bodhan and Sandal being in Ferelden during Witch Hunt. Bodhan's a merchant. He was probably helping to sell what Hawke and co. brought back from the Deep Roads.

sandals magic ability comes from a great sorceress.... Flemeth's tactics for having children were to trap men and be impregnated by them. then devour them. maybe king Endrin got away? but I think that Flemeth is Sandal's mother, making sandal Morrigan's half brother. mic drop.

Sandal is the half son of the dwarf king and The elf god June? And his limited mental cognition is a symptom of his connection to the fade as an elf mixed with his lyrium flowing powers as a dwarf. ( lyrium flowing as described by dagna) Added note: actually you could argue this mix of elf mage blood and dwarf blood from ANY elf is the reason for his gifts period. May not need any elf god-ness mixed in at all

But Endrin wasn’t the only male Aeducan. Piotin, for example. Obviously it wouldn’t be Trian, Bhelen, or the Warden (if male) as they would have been too young to sire a child. I think it may refer to a distant cousin or uncle. I do like the idea of Sandal possibly being a half-brother to the Aeducan Warden though. It’d be nice for the Warden have a sibling that likes them for a change.

That's a good point. What if Sandal is just... a short human?

One thing about the Aeducan bastard line, I don't think it specifically means he's Endrin's child. Could be the bastard of anyone in the Aeducan family, assuming there's more than just Endrin and his three legitimate kids. But I do really like the idea that he's the half-sibling of an Aeducan warden. I think my Aeducan would like to have a brother who isn't a murderer.

Obviously Sandal is a skrull...... ops wrong fandom never mind. I do think he's part elf though he looks different than regular dwarfs.

Notsosmartguy 625 if I'm not mistaken in DA Origins Sandal was slightly TALLER than Bodan... so the theory that sandal could be part elf might be likely!

Are the carta telling me that Sandal if half Elf/Dwarf and is he related to my Dwarven Noble Hero of Ferelden!! are you kidding me!!

When he rises everyone will see. I think he speaks of solas or the dread wolf. This maybe the plot for da4. What would be awsome because they would have plannend a lot in advance for the serie. And the fact that the world of thedas would see magic again when solas comes to power would make a lot of sense seeing the endig of tresspaser dlc

Hmmm... i’ve gotten that Sandal dialogue a few of times in my playthtoughs. Granted I replayed this game about a month ago and I don’t think I got it this time round. No idea it was so rare. Since you had such a hard time triggering it then I guess it is possible that you either need to go something specific to trigger it or that it is just extremely random.

I feel as if Sandal may be a failed attempt at a golem. Perhaps when they were experimenting to make golems, they got so mad and desperate that they tried to also make it work on children and Sandal could've been the first or only candidate to have survived, but since they couldn't make a proper Golem and thought they only broke the child (because I think a process like that would be very traumatizing for anyone if it doesn't work) they left him in the deep roads. Since it didn't go as planned, it caused Sandal to gain only some golem attributes but also leaving him with trauma so bad that he became simple-minded. Which would make sense for him killing so many darkspawn and forming simple words and sentences when spoken to. Also that he probably never grows too old, only some parts of him do, like his body but very slowly. Basically, he may be in a state between being half-dwarf and half golem or quarter golem. Side note: if he is a half-elf, it's likely that the mother MAY have been magical and I'm aware that dwarves can't do magic but what if the golem procedures brought out the dormant magical side in him, hence him being so good with rune crafting and being able to use them without any education. PLEASE keep in mind that this is just a theory and probably doesn't make a lot of sense or explain everything, don't flame me, I'm just another nerd trying to make sense of it all.

Given that it's all but confirmed we are fighting the whole elven pantheon, I'd say we're about to find out for sure if Sandal is an elven god.

Hero of Fereldan sees Sandal in a room full of dead Darkspawn. The hero asks "What happened here Sandal" Sandal replies "ENCHANTMENT" It made me laugh out loud the first time I got to this part.

There was also the part in origins when you're attacking Fort Drakon he's there in a room full of dead dark spawn as a sort of "supply replenishment shop" but no one comments on the fact that he did that alone as there no soldier bodies from what I remember.

When he says “the magic will come back...all of it” has he foreseen solas? And his plans maybe? The people he mentioned could be the elves regaining their power

I think he might be like Cole - posessed, but maybe by a spirit of wisdom. Say he was abandoned as a bastard child, and he did die, but he had potential so the spirit became him. It explains his powers, like the powers cole has. Its not as narratively huge but its a tragic and remarkable story still.

Wow. He was talking about The Dread Wolf. That's awesome. If you ask me, he is definitely one of the original Elven Gods, like Flemeth. That's why she visits him. I bet he'll play a large role in stopping him, as will Morrigan.

Before we take a very light stroll into the vast field of Sandal theories, I think we should make sure we've put on our...sandals.

I'm a firm believer Sandal is either yet another vessel for a member of the Evanuris (admittedly this is just my head saying omg yass), but more so a believer that Sandal is an agent of the Titans, potentially even THE agent of the Titans who has been with the player all along and we didn't even know it. Maybe his mental state is just a block. For all I know, he's saying some of the heaviest shit in the world for DA...and we only hear it as "enchantment" xD

My honest theory is that Sandal is a dwarf possessed by a spirit of the Fade. It would explain his seemingly vast power, as well as his mental state, being that dwarves are normally cut off from the Fade and have no connection to it. I could totally see it being a side effect of something so unnatural happening to him.

though i suspect it is something either far more or far less exciting i could buy him being half human or elf.. which could lend to the theory of his magical capabilities on top his mysterious back ground. i believe he is capable of drawing out the magic from within runes at the very least.

I always thought that sandal was the way he was because he was exposed to to much lyruim. Dwarves are resistant, but if it gets in the blood stream I can mess them up. Kinda like the trader closest to the diamond quarter. I thought be case he was down in the deep roads for who knows how long the lyrium must have messed him up.

My bet is that Sandal is some kind of vessel of some god or something. At 6:30, he kinda predicted the Trespasser DLC and Solas’s goal(AKA Fen’Harel). At 6:18, i bet the old lady is Flemmeth(who also is a vessel of a god or a god herself i dont remember) Finally, Sera could be the vessel of Andruil (and probably is). All im saying is that they showed us Sandal during 3 games lightly and it would make sense that in DA 4 you’d have to create a god squad will all those wanna be gods and Sandal is one of them for sure(see how he fked up that troll and said “not enchantment”?)

Sandal being the potential half-brother of my last Dwarf noble would be ridiculous for the story I was going for. Exiled for the death of one brother, Forgave another, and Enhanced by the final. She went to fight the archdemon by carrying Topsider's Honor (with OP enchantments), the Aeducan Family Shield, and the Reflection amulet from Trian's spirit from the Urn quest.

Here’s a theory. Just like how Mythal was slain and an essence of her survived to find a host (Flemeth), could the same be true for Sandal but instead of an elven god it is actually an essence of a titan and probably the one Mythal “killed”?

Perhaps Sandal's super old and is the child of an Evenuris (Hence why he's so good with enchanting and magic that he can easily deal with a threat that it takes an entire party of 15+ level adventurers to fight.) and a long-dead dwarf who was alive pre-veil and his ancient elvan blood combined with the magical properties of the room which was built pre-veil kept him from aging and taking him out of it caused him to age like a normal dwarf. And the lady with the scary laugh is Flemeth who knows this about sandal and she gives him knowledge (Such as training as a mage), this would also explain how he knew about the prophecy which many think have to do with Solas.

As some have already mentioned, I think he is linked to the Titans and their relationship to dwarves. The dwarf arcanist in Inquisition (can't remember her name) talks of while working on runes she is somehow connected briefly with a group mind and being as big as a mountain, which indicates a Titan. And then you have Valta and her magical ability manifesting in Descent. The story of Sandal being found in an area with a gem encrusted "story wall" of ancient Thedas history only strengthens this in my opinion.

Sandal is older than the maker but has never had a high enough consciousness to create anything but has an innate ability to grasp anything that is rather than what isn't or could be to a point where he is the most powerful being in Thedas and enjoys the world that is until he gains the ability to understand the flawed world he spends his time in and decides to destroy it.

sandal was probably the one thing that raised my curiosity in the dragon age series, i had a great time listening to your theory without even thinking about pausing or skipping, your voice is sweet too!

Coming back to the video now that Vielguard has been announced and the devs sharing that we can enchant our weapons or items and a familiar face returns to help...GOSH I hope its Sandel!

He does have an old gods soul, or possibly one of the elven "gods". He acts like Kieran! He knew of solas plan and Flemmith visiting him. If he had a gods soul, he could access the eluvians. Leading to the crossroads, it may be possible he's looking for the other gods.

Hey Ghil, can you do the Saarebas. I thought that it could be an interesting topic to enlighten on.

I think Witch Hunt actually takes place about a year after the end of the blight, with Awakening taking place about 6 months, with Golems taking place in between.

When I first met him in origins I thought that he was just a silly, ironic character. "Haha, the guy who makes complex magical enchantments is a mentally handicapped dwarf." Then I met him at Fort Drakon and I remember just staring at him for like a solid minute. I understood that he was there for practical reasons, but seeing that dopey face covered in blood in such an impossible location was something completely unexpected, and almost as if from a horror movie. When it was acknowledged in DA2 as something that Sandal actually does, I lost my shit again.

The last theory does make the most sense, but the fact that he can work lyrium puts a small wrench in that one, for me anyway. If Dagna researches the bits of the Fade scraped off of the Inquisitor some of the things she says leads me to believe that if you're part of the lyrium (bonded with a Titan, connected with the Fade?) you can't work and shape it the way dwarves and Tranquil mages can. They're both disconnected from what should be a natural part of them.

Commenting from 2024 prior to the new game. If I don't see Sandal in DA4 I will riot

I don't know if you know this or not but in Elvhen library in trespasser dlc, there is a journal about Sandal I didn't read it but one word stood out to me before i moved on: ENCHANTMENT! what in the maker's holy crotch was he doing there?! Anyways: my main (MAIN) theory is that he is one of those weird dwarves in the descent dlc Because they were skilled fighters as well as skilled crafters (they made objects with fused lyrium!)

You all have it wrong, Sandal is actually Chuck Norris in dwarven form.

hopefull you can have him as your crewmate, that he does nothing but all you see is how enemys just die around him, can give funny reactions, even save other crewmates, that if you take hem , you have 25 change of survive a critical blow that it just get throw back, with his reaction, after it

I strongly believe Bioware hinted that Sandal might be that half breed Aeducan that was left in the Deep Roads mentioned in the Legacy DLC from DA 2. He might have inherited magic from his non-Dwarven parent that way....idk it's just a theory that makes the most sense to me.

My Theroy is, Snadal is weird(duh). That weirdness (what ever the source) lets him find ways to use runes that aren't enchantment. "boom" frozen Ogre with a frost rune. He could have been tranquilized at young age and reverted sorta like a seeker, and it did werid things to his child mind that let rune craft "click" somehow and now he is a savant. he was left in the deep roads by his family, maybe because of his weirdness, maybe because it was an accident, a bit earlier someone else found the Thiag and went there with some people including sandal, they all died and no one knew where they went cause it was top secret. Except sandal cause "not enchantment" maybe he learned some before Bodahn, maybe He got locked in before the spawn came. something made everyone who was with him at 4-5 not be their anymore and no one knew. and he survived long enough to be found by bodahn.

Perhaps the creepy old lady with the laugh is supposed to be Flemmeth lol

I mean, there's no basis on which we can say these POWERFUL mages that the Dread Wolf locked away cannot try to get out. OF all of them, the god of crafting- who should be just as clever and devious as Solas (if not more)- should be the one to escape. Possible he effed it up and turned out like Sandal. Maybe he couldn't take his real body, like Mythal apparently??? and jumped aboard an occupied one, leading to the state Sandal is in. They might be locked away in the mirrors. What if child Sandal found one, maybe activated or did enough the June could jump through, and got possessed? Dragon Age is kinda going the route of "All your religions are lies, the powerful elven magisters did/can do everything." Dragon Age Origins ONLY had Flemeth, so them foreshadowing from the beginning makes a ton of sense. Solas also believes himself to be cleverer than he is. He was able to lock away his buddies due to TRUST more than intelligence.

The World of Thedas Volume 2 was released in 2015. Dragon Age Origins was released in 2009, Dragon Age II was in 2011, and Dragon Age Inquisition was in 2013. World of Thedas messed up or tried to retcon it.

I like the idea that Sandal is like Valta. I was listening to your video about the Titans when that thought occurred to me. It would make sense how he has magic and would also make sense with why he was sad to leave the deep roads. I think Sandal is connected to a Titan, and maybe even a Shabrytal.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe Dagna brings up working with or at least knowing Sandal, most likely during her time in the circle, in her dialogue with The Inquisitor. Mentions his skill and oddness and that he is the only one better at working magic into stone than her. Just thought that was cool

Ah danaduchy. Played mass effect and dragon age so much I thought I heard everything. Until i was listening to their videos and I heard unused clips and very specific combination that has a very low chance of occurring was played.

Well I always thought Tyrdda Bright-Axe's leaf-eared lover (the Lady of the Skies) was Mythal, who is also an elvhen god, but she also appears to everyone else in recent memory as a human in the form of Flemeth. If you think about the confusion with the guys about whether Sandal's mother was an elf or a human, maybe she was both?! Maybe she is Sandal's mother/creator/secret guardian in some fashion, hence why he says he's scared of the lady who stands by his bed. Is she checking up on him/keeping an eye on him for some reason only known to herself? Did she stick an old god or some of her magic or something inside him like she's been known to do before with Keiran/the locket, etc. And the fact that he can turn beings to frost statues with "not enchantment", a little bit like the power Solas has for turning people to stone. Mythal, I believe, ran some interference with the Avaar, aka Tyrdda, and we know Avaar mages took spirit teachers, so I believe that the leaf-eared lover was Mythal as her elvhen spirit teacher. The lover/Mythal subtly manipulated Tyrdda to take her clan to from the lowlands in Ferelden to the Frostback Mountains where they would meet the dwarves, and Hendir, who she told Tyrdda she should bear a child to continue the line. So we know that Mythal has interfered with dwarves as well as humans and elves, and I wouldn't put it past the Aeducan child, Sandal, to be a descendent of this interference, in some way similar to Keiran, as I said above. Of course, of the leaf-eared lover is not Mythal this theory falls down somewhat.

I think Sandal is close to what Dwarves used to be when originally linked to the Titans sort of Mindless drones. Not completely because since Titans were mostly killed their power is weaker and since Sandal was a baby his mind was damaged by the takeover hence he is sort of the In between of Valta and the sha brytol not a mindless drone but also not fully functional.

If Sandal isn't at least MENTIONED in Veilguard, I'm going to be so sad

I seem to recall the carter talking about Sandal too in one of my playthroughs. I think my rogue was stealthed scouting ahead & I heard them. I would need to do a playthrough to check that however.

My favorite head canon is that he's actually the one dwarven god. Since the dwarves do not worship gods, he's free to roam and hides in the guise of a simpleton.
