"Split People By Categories, Not Gender!" Neil deGrasse Tyson on Transgender Athletes
Ойын-сауық
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson joins Piers Morgan Uncensored to discuss the fairness of transgender athletes competing in women's sports.
Neil suggests that we should be more creative in coming up with a solution to include transgender athletes in sports. He believes that people shouldn't just be competing against the same gender but instead we should find more detailed categories such as hormone levels and reflex speeds to determine competition across all gender identities and group them together. He believes not only would this make sport more inclusive, but would also create a more balanced and competitive game.

We already have categories…male/female. And…we already have subcategories dependent on the sport and level of competition. (e.g. weight classes, age, etc.) None of this has been an issue until trans athletes came into the picture. The fact is, no categorization system will ever be perfect enough to create a completely even playing field. I say add a third category for trans athletes, to major events if there is enough demand in the sport. Gender identity and gender expression are NOT the same thing. You can be a biological male and express yourself as female, and that is fine. BUT, you are still biologically a male and must compete in alignment with body you were given. He changed the Serena Williams topic in an eye blink. Instead of the extremely complicated solution DeGrass gave, the solution to be fair to women is for trans to compete in the mens category or if they dont like it open a just trans category. Changing the categorization of sports is the same as changing our language to not bother a minority. Its just one of 100 things they want us to change. What did he say that's wrong? He wants to categorise people based on the specifics of their biology in terms of what provides an advantage/disadvantage so as to produce the most fair pairings of athletes to compete. That's exactly what people who complain about trans athletes want too. It's just that Neil's suggestion is way more comprehensive and not as basic and naive as "men" and "women" categories. Whatever you would claim would be advantageous for any particular sport, we can classify by that. Is weight a significant factor? Ok, let's have weight categories. Is bone density important? Ok, let's have categories for that. Is it a multifaceted mix of many different factors? Ok, we can measure all those facets and score each competitor by those measurements to classify them for the fairest competition. You would say we should categorise by men and women because men have some advantages and women have other advantages. Neil is simply saying we should just categorise by those advantages directly instead of using their biological sex as a proxy for those advantages. That proxy is extremely imprecise - much less accurate than scientific, empirical measurement. It's pretty straightforward stuff. It's kind of revealing your true colours if you disagree with Neil here because it's exactly your own argument but taken to a more comprehensive level using biological science. Meaning to disagree with Neil's point demonstrates that your original argument wasn't sincere because you now disagree with it simply because it now allows for trans people to compete fairly. You probably just don't like trans people.
@sockpastarock7082

Is so sad there is many that are being made at a very young age to think doing what you did in the past is a good idea, long before they have better knowledge of those long term effects. Or know on what changing their physical sex may do to them as an adult. Had I lived as a young kid today, I would absolutely grab at the chance to change my sex, and therefor my gender. Long before I knew what it would mean in trying to do so with our modern biotech. Also, it sickens me to see a speech by one running a hospital, talk of the money that can be made, by trying to get the young in wanting to transition. And as you well know, the cost would be ongoing. Hospitals are meant to help the sic and/or injured. Not manipulate the public for profit. I will not try it, for I know the biotech is not there yet to do such a thing correctly, or as well as I would want it to. And is why some who are trans will not take up doing bottom surgery either. I can understand why only some would want to transition, and this from the view of someone without gender dysphoria. My reasons is not all to far off from gender dysphoria, is still not the same. I do wish that the biotech was ready. It would help so many people. But should only be started by those that have had a few years of adult life, so they'd have a much better idea of what they would be doing, and if it is something truly right for them. I would say even teens don't have a very good grasp of what is good for them or not. Or some adults for that matter. Glad to know you are speaking up on behalf of those that might be dealing with some issue other than a true form of gender dysphoria. I have bee seeing it more and more from others that was misinformed about what condition they may have, if any, then next being told they might be trans and get them on that form of treatment, only for years later they find that was not the case, a little too late. -.-

@@adetunmbiabdulsalam1187 what he's describing sounds like the game top trumps. The problem is you could have a player that excels at one thing on your top trumps card or they could excel at 5 things. Yes you can create then multiple categories of all the people that fit into that number of things they excel in but then you have to keep an eye on that constantly to see whether they now need to go over onto another category etc.. Also there are things men and women are always going to experience differently ie. Women (who can) will have a period every month, they might suffer from pms. Women experience pain differently from men etc..
what catagories could we think of.. 🤔
So how many categories do you think is suffiicient to cover everything?

Scientists often don't have to worry about remembering a breath of information and instead just generally focus on their narrow discipline or area of work. Neil has done research previously but is a science promoter and communicator as well as directing a planetarium. Nor does he claim to be a researcher and often directs people to those that do research. That is highly commendable. What he is talking about is finding other ways to classify athletes other than by male, female or man, woman. It would change the entire realm of sports. You would have multigender teams. Be them male, female, trans-male or trans-female members. Could be a combination of the spectrum maybe. Sports categorized and sorted on different determinations other than just biological sex alone. Don't know why so many people can't understand what he was talking about. He also with limited knowledge of what would or could work gave some "what if" ideas. And he stated very clearly that it may not be the solution. But could be a good place to start expanding how we view things in the future. Anyway, I see nothing wrong with figuring out a different way of sorting and building on multi-gender athletic system.
So @Pierce, as a topic that nobody initiated. Just check how categories are defined in paralympic sports. They provide almost equal possibilities for people with different disabilities. the problem that occur is due to the expensive lobby for TGNDR

Never mind the competition, it would take weeks to analyse everyone for which category they fit in, then they'd all have to be rechecked before the competition in case of hormone, flexibility changes (due to diet, injury etc). Hang on, you cannot have a race on certain days, because that would be unfair on those women that are having a period that week, unless we have a race specifically for only women having a period at that particular time! It's mind-boggling; I mean at what point do you say we have enough categories without offending someone who doesn't quite fit in your list?
