"Split People By Categories, Not Gender!" Neil deGrasse Tyson on Transgender Athletes

Ойын-сауық

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson joins Piers Morgan Uncensored to discuss the fairness of transgender athletes competing in women's sports.
Neil suggests that we should be more creative in coming up with a solution to include transgender athletes in sports. He believes that people shouldn't just be competing against the same gender but instead we should find more detailed categories such as hormone levels and reflex speeds to determine competition across all gender identities and group them together. He believes not only would this make sport more inclusive, but would also create a more balanced and competitive game.

He's a supposed scientist, who miserably fails to present an argument that's logical, or concise; his chess/wrestling analogy is pathetically unscientific, and so is his hilariously dumb idea to segregate "brackets" of competition in sports by hormonal levels. We already have categories…male/female. And…we already have subcategories dependent on the sport and level of competition. (e.g. weight classes, age, etc.) None of this has been an issue until trans athletes came into the picture. The fact is, no categorization system will ever be perfect enough to create a completely even playing field. I say add a third category for trans athletes, to major events if there is enough demand in the sport. Gender identity and gender expression are NOT the same thing. You can be a biological male and express yourself as female, and that is fine. BUT, you are still biologically a male and must compete in alignment with body you were given. How you express or identify, does not change your biology.

His being a respected black man was enough to counteract his getting cancelled. He's not going to admit men are stronger than women in sports. Serena is on record, and Michael Phelps is on record as saying it is unfair. Statistics, which Neil usually would listen to, also say it is unfair. He talked himself in circles here and Piers idolizes this guy so there wasn't the normal pushback. What did he say that's wrong? He wants to categorise people based on the specifics of their biology in terms of what provides an advantage/disadvantage so as to produce the most fair pairings of athletes to compete. That's exactly what people who complain about trans athletes want too. It's just that Neil's suggestion is way more comprehensive and not as basic and naive as "men" and "women" categories. Whatever you would claim would be advantageous for any particular sport, we can classify by that. Is weight a significant factor? Ok, let's have weight categories. Is bone density important? Ok, let's have categories for that. Is it a multifaceted mix of many different factors? Ok, we can measure all those facets and score each competitor by those measurements to classify them for the fairest competition. You would say we should categorise by men and women because men have some advantages and women have other advantages. Neil is simply saying we should just categorise by those advantages directly instead of using their biological sex as a proxy for those advantages. That proxy is extremely imprecise - much less accurate than scientific, empirical measurement. It's pretty straightforward stuff. It's kind of revealing your true colours if you disagree with Neil here because it's exactly your own argument but taken to a more comprehensive level using biological science. Meaning to disagree with Neil's point demonstrates that your original argument wasn't sincere because you now disagree with it simply because it now allows for trans people to compete fairly. You probably just don't like trans people.

Consider the heavier weight categories like 68, 74, 80kg where men are taller and muscular and got a larger BMI. I'm not sure about other fighting sports (boxing, kickboxing, MMA), but it's clear as day it's the same case.

I had to stop listening to his drivel. How in the fool have we taken something so simple and as old as the Garden of Eden (classifying humans as men and women) and screwed it up so badly? Pierce is right: pretty soon the Olympics will be sex-neutral; come one come all. The events in which women can excel would be DRASTICALLY reduced (gymnastics, diving, maybe some equestrian...). Neil's point went off the rails once he started confusing personalities (effeminate boys and masculine girls) with gender identity (ie sex). You can be an effeminate dude all you want to, but don't start changing the rules of society to cater to your delusions.

As somebody who transitioned for 6 years and devoted a lot of my life to trying to be a woman, both with hormones and breast augmentation surgery, I can say that I agree that biology is a categorical truth. Gender has taken over as an ideology in it is beginning to deteriorate the normal adolescence of the youth, and indenturing them to a lifetime of medical care and expensive procedures. The takeover of women's spaces, now coupled with this ideology of replacing their nomenclature is becoming toxic, and absurd. Detransitioners like me are speaking up about the harms and lack of adequate long-term psychotherapy or other safeguards to screen for comorbidities, like autism spectrum, which ended up being my situation.

As a guy in his mid 40s who wants to be a women, feels for your situation. Is so sad there is many that are being made at a very young age to think doing what you did in the past is a good idea, long before they have better knowledge of those long term effects. Or know on what changing their physical sex may do to them as an adult. Had I lived as a young kid today, I would absolutely grab at the chance to change my sex, and therefor my gender. Long before I knew what it would mean in trying to do so with our modern biotech. Also, it sickens me to see a speech by one running a hospital, talk of the money that can be made, by trying to get the young in wanting to transition. And as you well know, the cost would be ongoing. Hospitals are meant to help the sic and/or injured. Not manipulate the public for profit. I will not try it, for I know the biotech is not there yet to do such a thing correctly, or as well as I would want it to. And is why some who are trans will not take up doing bottom surgery either. I can understand why only some would want to transition, and this from the view of someone without gender dysphoria. My reasons is not all to far off from gender dysphoria, is still not the same. I do wish that the biotech was ready. It would help so many people. But should only be started by those that have had a few years of adult life, so they'd have a much better idea of what they would be doing, and if it is something truly right for them. I would say even teens don't have a very good grasp of what is good for them or not. Or some adults for that matter. Glad to know you are speaking up on behalf of those that might be dealing with some issue other than a true form of gender dysphoria. I have bee seeing it more and more from others that was misinformed about what condition they may have, if any, then next being told they might be trans and get them on that form of treatment, only for years later they find that was not the case, a little too late. -.-

@@glenfoxh that was a very thoughtful response. I also felt that the technology was not what it claims to be. It may never be. There are still so many social differences between what girls endure being sexualized as they're raised, and the experience that boys go through. I don't think it means we need to transition earlier, I think it means that this is all plastic surgery, which has been for adults unless it's in the realm of reconstruction. I think it is wise to accept the feeling and except that there can still be a level of self-acceptance and ultimately authenticity is the truest thing. Be them male, female, trans-male or trans-female members. Could be a combination of the spectrum maybe. Sports categorized and sorted on different determinations other than just biological sex alone. Don't know why so many people can't understand what he was talking about. He also with limited knowledge of what would or could work gave some "what if" ideas. And he stated very clearly that it may not be the solution. But could be a good place to start expanding how we view things in the future. Ah, my esteemed Neil Tyson, your presence among the learned is like that of a flickering candle in a tempest, struggling to find its place amidst the brilliance. As for us, the common minds among men, we embody a blazing supernova of intellect, radiating with knowledge and wisdom that shall endure through time. Your contorted expressions during arguments do little to uphold the legacy of the great Carl Sagan, who never wavered in his composure, even amidst the most challenging debates. You, dear Tyson, fail to hold anyone's torch, for your light pales in comparison to the towering luminaries of the past and present. So, bask in the dwindling glow of your self-proclaimed intelligence, while we, the collective intellect of humanity, continue to shine brightly, casting a luminous path for generations to come. Your transient presence in the annals of history shall be overshadowed and forgotten, while the brilliance of our minds remains etched into the very fabric of the cosmos.

Sorry, Neil, you are evading the truth so that you don’t hurt feelings. When I was ten years old, I was jealous of the attention that my brother got from my dad because he was a boy. I prayed every night that I would wake up a boy,and even wore his clothes for 2 weeks after school as I wanted to know what it was like. I also hated wearing skirts and dresses as they were restrictive when I was playing and climbing. I got over it all in a few weeks and realized my dad loved me just as much as my brother. I’ve never since wanted to be a male.Nowadays, I would be told I was the wrong gender and given hormone blockers.

Never mind the competition, it would take weeks to analyse everyone for which category they fit in, then they'd all have to be rechecked before the competition in case of hormone, flexibility changes (due to diet, injury etc). Hang on, you cannot have a race on certain days, because that would be unfair on those women that are having a period that week, unless we have a race specifically for only women having a period at that particular time! It's mind-boggling; I mean at what point do you say we have enough categories without offending someone who doesn't quite fit in your list? Usain Bolt the greatest sprinter of all time...ermm no, because by your logic, he had an advantage over everyone else because of his build..., so we need to make him compete again, but only against those that match him physically - oh wait, he's running against himself!
