Spirulina vs. Chlorella - What's the Difference?
Spirulina and Chlorella are two nutrient-dense algae superfoods that many people enjoy consuming, but few people really understand the difference between them.

Which one is better for you? I have both but am sticking to chlorella for now. I saw a video of someone saying spiraling can contain tons of heavy metals 😵 which is odd because I thought that’s what I was detoxing from using it

Any product (including chlorella and spirulina) can potentially have problematic levels of heavy metals if not grown and processed correctly, but that definitely doesn't mean they all have this issue. You can ask the manufacturer if they will share their heavy metal test results with you.

You should look into the prevalence of neurotoxin contaminants in spirulina, specifically BMAA, which has been linked to ALS-PDC neurodegenerative disorder. Also should be aware that unusable B12-like analogs in spirulina can compete with true B12 uptake. Chlorella doesn’t seem to share these issues.

great stuff. use in smoothies. be careful and get your fruit and veggie ratio right. or it will taste like eating dirt or grass

Thanks for your comment! Blue green algae has phycocianin, whereas green algae does not. Spirulina is an algae and algae are bacteria.

@@addictivewellness i mean that was not the point of my question but it’s german. Does spirulina helps to lower the body heavy metal on blood?
@addictivewellness

I know, I just really love languages and I speak a few, so I was hoping maybe I would be able to answer you in your first language, but unfortunately I don't speak German, despite my German ancestry. I would not expect spirulina to create a meaningful difference in one's heavy metal levels. Chlorella can help with heavy metal detox, but I would really recommend seeking out a doctor-supervised chelation protocol with DMSA, DMPS or EDTA. These protocols will usually also incorporate chlorella, glutathione, NAC, and other things supportive of gentle but effective detoxification.

Yes, it detoxifies your body of heavy metals by binding to them.
Can I replace it with my protein power?

does spirulina have side effects
@papanicks
4 ай бұрын
Yes possibly. Two main ones are 1)the presence of neurotoxin contaminants BMAA which has been linked to ALS-PDC neuro-degenerative disorder and 2)presence of B12-like analogs which the body cannot use compete with the uptake of true B12.

@@papanicks The point you raise is the prime reason why it is extremely important to harvest spirulina at a pH over 10 (between 10-11). This is part of the quality control that commercial producers and small-scale producers employ to ensure spirulina's quality for consumers. If it's not at the right pH, it simply doesn't get harvested. The liver toxins you're speaking of are called microcystins, which are peptides produced microcystis, not by spirulina. Microcystis are unable to survive at such a high alkaline level between 10-11. This is what separates spirulina from another superfood cyanobacteria, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (aka AFA blue-green algae), which commonly grows up in Klammath Lake in Oregon. AFA, however, cannot grow at the high alkaline levels that spirulina can in order to avoid microcystins. This is the prime reason why I grow spirulina and not AFA, or chlorella for that matter, which also grows at a lower pH. Commonly, people and researchers assume that since AFA and spirulina are both cyanobacteria, their ideal growing conditions are also one and the same, but they usually get lumped together anyway when the research is not complete. It would be helpful if the gentleman who produced the video would learn more about each species and their differences. -posted in a thread about from a FB group.

@@papanicks Spirulina Division The same goes true regarding BMAA - and I'm glad you bring it up to help demystify it. Cyanobacterias are a diverse organism kingdom and BMAA has been associated with certain species of cyanobacteria, but not with arthrospira (this is the spirulina species). This was the point of a response published April 2005 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS 102: 5074-5078).
