I think a more interesting theory would be not that Yubaba was Sophie, but rather that she and Zeniba are related to Sophie and Howl. Possibly grandchildren or great grandchildren. It's the fact Yubaba is so darn greedy that does it for me. Even if Sophie were hardened by Howl dying somehow, I doubt she'd do a complete 180 on her humble, hardworking, practical personality to decorate her home so garishly, cover herself in jewels, and spoil her baby to the point of smothering. She takes great offense to the Witch of the Waste calling her "tacky", which is exactly how Zeniba describes Yubaba's interior decorating. If anything, Yubaba is more like Howl than Sophie, with her flair for the dramatic and her opulent fashion sense. Zeniba takes more after Sophie.

Lindsey Kelley I agree with you on this theory, in fact I've also been wondering how the sisters are actually Howl and Sophie's children. However I need to make a point here that howl's world is an alternate world of an European country and that it is set around the early 1900. None of you explained how those two were able to end up in the spirited world, but I can safely say that Howl must've created a portal like his door in his old castle, and brought up their children in the other realm, which is currently where Zeniba lives. As you said Zeniba inherited Sophie's kindness and Yubaba inherited her hard work, whereas their inheritance to howl is unique, as Zenibel shows her impatience towards people who could not differentiate her and her sister, while Yubaba inherited Howl's greed for power and her love for antiquities. Yubaba's ambition to own a bath house must have sparked when she sees how much her father loves warm baths and enjoys them too, initially hoping to spread joy and comfort to the people, or shall i say spirits, who came to her baths. She had probably used magic a couple of times to aid her on her rise as the mistress of the bath house, along with a number secure clients who are willing to help her build her empire. Coming back to the portal, it actually does not explain why the world spirited away was based on is actually the spirited world and how Yubaba ended up there. I want to believe that Zeniba still stays in the Howl's universe, as there are almost no signs of odd or mythical creatures roaming around her area, except for that japanese version of Luxo Lamp which she had cast a spell on. In Yubaba's place, magic is the norm there, as even the way of transportation is by magic. She probably moved there due to the ease of access to magic. I still have more to explain about the spirit world but I'd like to hear your theory upon the difference between howl's world and theirs. I will be back in the next comment about the spirit world :3 I still like your theory and I hope the fangirl put our theories into account and revise them

I also believe that they may be the descendants of Sophie and Howl because of Yubaba’s rings. Howl has on a ring most of the film and gives that one ring to Sophie, so maybe that’s where her love for rings came from (kinda a stretch, but whatever).

I like this theory, and it really works if you look at the books as nothing more than inspiration for the movie. Actually, it works even better if Sophie being a witch would've been confirmed in the movie (like it was in the books).

I honestly don't like the idea of Sophie being Yubaba. I would, however, like to know what no face is.

thats the beauty if soft world building :) its all up to you to interpret what noface is. miyazaki doesnt have to justify anything because of the nature of how he wrote spirited away! i think you would be disappointed if he came later with facts about stuff...kind of like how JK R ruins her universe with stating things about the characters later on. Tolkien is pretty much the only one in my humble opinion that made hard world building really really work..And if you think Star Wars, Mad max, Harry Potter ect is hard world building i would disagree

Miyazaki is famously notorious for not visually diversifying characters. He's about the story, not the look of the characters, so it's hard to say if there was intended to be a connection. A lot of his older characters look like the same girl with different hair because of his lacking character designs though.

Nope. 😂 Howl's Moving Castle is based on Diana Wynne Jones books and Spirited Away has it's own book series by Hayao Miyazaki. Yubaba just looks like her because they're animated by the same company.

Actually, HMC is also directed by Miyazaki, inspired by the book of Diana Jones, and not implicably replicated, since more or less half of the movie is different from the book, now it really may be not connected by any chance, but the subtle hints really speak for itself otherwise

I've noticed that a creature that Chihiro squashed looked like a Peeping Bug the Witch of the Waste found

We all know that Sophies curse was never broken because even after falling in love with howl all that remained of her was her white hair. So if howl died in the future Sophies curse would probably slowly get to her again. and another thing I noticed in spirited away is that later when Yubaba is furious of the loss of her child she starts to go crazy and she breaths fire...fire? this led me believe that at some point Calcifur did make a similar curse like Howls with Sophie later on. And combine that with her current curse that was never broken, of course it would have a far more deadly impact on herself. Calcifur is a fire demon after all, so why else would she be able to breath fire? And I know people are saying down in the comments that Sophie is not a selfish greedy type of person, but just remember back in howls moving castle there were different types of demons that could corrupt a persons soul, such as the Witch of the Waste. So if Sophie did get cursed by Calcifur along with a curse that CAME FROM THE WITCH OF THE WASTE you would imagine that it would affect her mind, heart, body, and soul.

Yubaba isn't evil. None of Miyazaki's newer characters are. Even he said so. Yubaba is greedy and cold but her positions as an owner of a bathhouse for ghosts surely toughen her! And plus, she helped Chihiro in a way. She gave her job and she loves her baby.

I think Its Chihiro met Haku in the future but in another movie. Madam Suliman's children servant's have the same hair as Haku but different hair color. When Howl returns to human, he was resting like Haku when he returned as a human. And, Sophie turned him back the same as Haku. You can go rewatch the movie and verify yourself. Leave a like if you understand what I am talking about.

Okay, I am an identical twin as well as a student of Japanese pop culture, and there are some flaws in this theory. The big one is that you didn't focus on the twin witches in "Spirited Away" deeply enough. In manga/anime, identical twins appear the same but have differing personalities. We see this in "Spirited Away", in "Blue Exorcist", in the Hitachiin twins of "Ouran High School Host Club" (the differences are subtle but Haruhi does bring them out), and in the twin exorcists (SPOILER, I guess) in the manga/anime "Ghost Hunt"; where Mai experiences Oliver as bossy, arrogant and quick-tempered, she knows his twin Gene as gentler, kind and compassionate; too bad he only appears as a ghost. Sophie in "Howl" has at least one sister, maybe more. But Sophie is the eldest of the daughters and is more "grown-up" and "responsible". This is why I write books in Real Life under my name Patrick Drazen: because there is so much of Japanese culture embedded pretty deeply in anime that it sometimes needs to be dug out and examined.

Spirited away is a adapted version of Alice in wonderland and the wizard of Oz, yubaba is one of the wicked witches and her sister is the good witch + OZ mixed together.

I think they might be either Howl and Sophie's daughters or maybe a daughter who splits all her toughness serious into one personality and her compassion and kindness into another. Another is that now that Howl, Sophie, and Calcifer are now one being and over time they fused into one entity but Sophie's love and Howls greed take over during different times of the day. Both sisters have traits of Sophie and Howl I don't think it's too far off if she's their daughter or them combined into one entity. I can honestly see both yubaba being raised by Howl to being a greedy girl and zenibaby sophie into a kind but stern demeanor

Maybe since haku is stated as a river spirit, a spirit is usual reference to a ghost, and in which howl became haku. They both resembled animals but both of them, flying animals, as haku seemed like a dragon

I rlly think that Howl and Sophie are the parents of Zeniba and Yubaba. Maybe Yubaba hated her sister because she got more attention than her, but her parents loved them both equaly. Yubaba probably didnt wanna talk to Zeniba because of the past a long time ago, and maybe Zeniba didnt apologize because she didnt know why Yubaba was turning on her.

I have a theory that Howl’s castle is built from the destroyed fort from Castle in the sky: 1.The domes on Howl’s castle looks an awful lot like the turrets the robot blew up on the fort. 2.When Calsifur is losing control the mini moving castle the dome splits in half like how the robot blew them up and as if Howl saw the destroyed fort and rebuilt the fort into the moving castle.

I also have a theory that Haku and Zaniba planned his almost death together. This made Sen cure him and Zaniba got ... To see her family? To infiltrate her sisters Bathhouse? To get a Noface? I'm sure she had more motive than that. Also if those train tickets were so rare why did Kamaji (The Boiler Man) give Sen 4 tickets? Oh, because the baby was supposed to go with Sen the whole time maybe? Maybe Zaniba even gave the tickets to Kamaji? Zaniba did seem to expect them.

i think howls moving castle takes place in the early edwardian era (around 1905-1910). when we see lattie's dress it's a pastel pink. wearing pastel dresse was very popular during the time (and they weren't as popular during the late victorian era). and she has a lose buns, which weren't used at all in the late 1880s. and when we see sophie's mother she has a very extra hat with a lot of feathers and decorations. these very elegant and extra hats didn't exist at all in the victorian era, so it's safe to assume it's not edwardian. and when sophie realises shes old she says 'at least your clothes finally suit you'. which makes since because back then it was socially acceptable for the elderly to dress in outdated fashion, while younger women were expected to stay up to date with the newest fashion trends.

Interesting theory. I mean, I don't like it, because that means that part of Sophie got twisted, maybe through the loss of Howl, maybe she even tried to imitate some of who he was to keep him with her in some way which ended up with her acting out the worst parts of him through Yubaba. It's said that couples often start acting like each other because of being around each other so much as well so she could have picked up on some of his ways while he was alive and then have that go bad once he died. If Sophie is Yubaba and working at the bath house caused her to be forgetful it's also entirely possible that contributed to her forgetting who she was (her kinder qualities). If this is true and Howl did in fact die, his death might also be related to the existence of the child. If Howl and Sophie had a child, it wouldn't be a stretch to think this child, being of two powerful wizards, would be a hot commodity. And therefore hunted by wizards who may want to raise it as their own to have access to its powers. It's a story line that was used on Charmed, I think. It wouldn't be a stretch to think that Howl died trying to protect Sophie and their child. But yeah, while I think this theory is plausible and really well thought out, I don't really like it because of the sad possibilities that come with it. I'd much rather believe the twins are descendants of Sophie and Howl. And each inherited some of their traits and ran with them. But again, it does make sense. Also as to why Zeniba would take No Face in. Sophie was always someone to give all creatures the benefit of the doubt. I mean, she took in The Witch of the Waste. And old Sophie didn't let anyone walk all over her even while being kind about it. She's definitely the kind of person who would be able to get a feared creature to sit still and help her with her knitting. And NoFace was a demon of greed/fed by greed so aside from the reasons you mentioned I guess he could be one of the blobs from Howl's Moving Castle, because the Witch of the Waste was fueled by greed. Which may have been how she got them to work for her. Feeding them with enough greed to make them willing to serve her and tangible as opposed to NoFace's see-through appearance at the end, but not enough for them to have the ability to take over. Kind of a similar agreement as Howl had with Calcifer but that required consistent emotion/energy instead of a physical sacrifice/connection.

I have to heavily disagree on this one aaa it seems like a huuuuugggge stretch For both places take place in entirely different countries and universes, you even say so yourself that howls moving castle takes place in a different universe. Not to mention yubaba is a youkai or spirit. It makes no sense that someone who’s not even from that universe would somehow make their way over there to that universe, manage to get allllll the way from Wales to japan, open up an entire bath house for spirits and gods and turn themself and their child into a youkai. Not to mention while you don’t mention the books, just because the same person made two different movies that doesn’t make them automatically connected into some universe. Howl is the theatrical release of an already published and established book series while spirited away is a genuine studio ghibli original. They aren’t even on the same plane of existence so it’s really not logical to draw the comparison in the slightest And I’m not even going to get in to the nitty gritty of the completely inaccurate character comparisons

I think Yubaba and Zeniba are related to Madam Suliman due to their similar levels of jewelry and their similar hair styles, and the fact that as the children of presumably someone very powerful like Madam Suliman it would explain why the two witches are referred to casting and possessing such powerful magic/artifacts. Zeniba’s paper dolls are similar to the dancing sprites that Suliman conjoined to affect other magical beings, and Yubaba’s transformation seems like a self controlled and reversible version of whatever spell Suliman put on the other wizards and tried to make Howl go through.

I know this is actually based strictly on the movies, but the books can actually back up some of these theories. Example: in the sequels to the book, Sophie and howl actually have children. Though I can't add on to that since I have yet to read the others. Also in the book, Sophie has two sisters. One becomes a very powerful witch under the mentoring of Ben Sullivan. So a magical sister isn't too far fetched. Though there is only one sibling in the movie, that sibling herself also had some magical properties in the book. Ones I can't tell, because it's a very pleasant and surprising twist, but it would very much back up movie!sophie having a magical sibling.

I havent scrolled trough whole comment section, so i dont know if someone has already suggested it, but. Wouldn't it make more sense if Haku is young Haul. I mean the clues are all there and theire personalities kinda match. As Haku, Haul is also driven by the sorcery and goes out his way to learn all about it. We have seen Haul giving away his soul to seek more powers. I think Sophie and Chichori are not related and rather Sophie lives in future rather than Chichori. When we see Chichori walk down the tunnel, there are window paints similar to the door's region sign from HMC. Perhapse the room itself was gateway between real and magical world. I think that Chichori was Hauls lost love and now that Sophie showed her love towards Haul he found a reason to fight for again. Also doesn't seem as far fetched that magical world is more steampunky than real world.

You forget that the bathhouse turns people a little nutty and when people get away from it, thier compassion returns. Or at least they're not grumpy. Plus, the baby is a type of spirit from Japanese and Scandinavian lore. The only one I know of is the Scandinavian one, which is the spirit of abandoned children who latch onto travelers to get them to bury thier bodies. But they get bigger and heavier when they are closer to their body. Plus, Chihiro calls Yubaba "Granny" at the end. So, it's reasonable to think they're the same person.

Are there any spirited away theories?

I love howls moving castle and my biggest question has always been how/what makes howls hair change color? I know there's one scene where Sophie cleans the house and he accidentally dyes it while in the shower but how does it change between blonde and black? I thought it might be his emotion for a second if he's happy or sad but there are times when he's happy and it's black so what changes his hair color

How’l moving castle is based on the book with the same title by Diana Wynne Jones, I don’t doubt there are similarities in the movies because they put a lot of connected references in ghibli movies but the stories are in their own universe.

We got different theories, Somehow i think that madame suliman is yubaba and idk if you notice his apprentice is apparently haku in Spirited Away. For some reason i have a thinking that yubaba was the one who run the bath house still could not figure out how they got there. But that was just a theory.

I like the imagination behind this video but I think it's more likely that Haku and Chihiro are alternate versions of Howl and Sofie. Think about it, before Sofies curse when she still has her brown hair she looks a lot like am older Chihiro and so does Howl when his hair goes back to its original black color. The hair color playing a role on top of their connection in both movies makes me think maybe when Haku promised to meet Chihiro in the future he acually meant our real world time (when each move comes out) not the fictional world time and therefore they are put into this alternative universe. I'm not meaning to say these four characters are the same, simple that they are alternate versions of their previous selves in different stories/time periods. Maybe I'm reaching but thinking of their similarities is definitely fun!

You should first check theory (hayao miyazaki has confirmed at least half of it) about spirited away. The bath house actually is a bordell where chihiro pays her parents debt. Sophie would never run a bordell and there's really no connection at all.

This is interesting but I don’t think that she could be yubaba since she does have a sister. I would rather think that Sophie would possibly be yubaba and zanibas mother. Hence how she has the raven form given to her from her father. It would also explain why howl isn’t around, he’s more then likely with Sophie enjoying life or both are passed.

I’m sorry, but this makes no sense at all. Your theories were based solely on character design (which shouldn’t mean much, considering they’re from the same studio, so it’s expected that they have a similar style). These speculations made me a little disgusted 🥴😂

I thought Howls Moving Castle was supposed to be set during one of the world wars

yeah, but yubaba had a twin sister, Sophie didn’t, I mean sure she had a sister, but in the movie she’s even known as the younger sister, so don’t you think that Howl and Sophie have a child, who has a child that moves to Japan in the 1940’s, then has a child, that is Yubaba?!

I need to throw another theory at you, one that is grounded in Japanese pop culture. In the case of identical twins--of which I am one in Real Life--part of being physically identical means that they also have opposite personalities. This is seen in "Spirited Away", the twin demon hunters in "Blue Exorcist", the twin exorcists Naru and Gene in "Ghost Hunt", and even the Hitachiin twins of "Ouran High School Host Club" show different personalities as time goes by. A Japanese audience would look at Yubaba and Zeniba--identical in looks but different in personality--and know that all is as it should be.

I don't think Sophie could be Yubaba. Sohpie is a very kind person and Yubaba isn't. If anything, she'd be Zaniba because she's the nice one.

What a creative theory! I adore both of these movies, but I’ve never thought of this before. Although I admit, I don’t like to think of my beloved Sophie turning her whole personality around. But it’s an intriguing thought nonetheless...
