I never interpreted her losing her witch ability to betrayal. I see it as she lost all confidence in herself. She wasn't sure who she was anymore. Did she want to be a witch anymore? If she wasn't a witch, who was she?

I would of lost my confidence too if i only had 1 outfit to wear. I wish she would of got those red shoes and a nicer dress. But I guess it finally shows that she accepts her roots or herself.

It's my favorite Ghibli film. Kiki mirror's every striving young adult. Learning the struggle of being independent and also discovering the beauty of it by yourself.

According to Miyizaki: Kiki loses her ability to fly because she has matured and no longer needs her mom's broom. Jiji is the immature side of Kiki and losing the ability to speak means she has matured beyond speaking to her cat.

Thanks for the vid! I rewatched Kiki’s Delivery Service earlier this week. I had watched it as a teen first, then later as an adult. It hit different each time. When Kiki depressingly says “Without my powers, I’m not a witch, then what am I?” I felt that. Teens and young adults struggle very much with identity. And the more we fight to be who we think we are, the more things tend to not work in our favour. Identity is something therefore that cannot be forced but is more intrinsic and complex than that. Because her sole purpose and her identity were challenged, that happens when you have much hope and expectations of the future and keep getting hit with unexpected challenges and things not going your way, Kiki became depressed and her powers severely weakened. I don’t think it was as a result of betrayal. She had understandable insecurities with fitting in and didn’t have any friends in a new environment. But through her growth we see that her love, friendship and having patience with herself allowed her to save Tombo’s life, and continue her friendships and make more meaningful connections with people - which in turn helped to make her better in her career. Also, I don’t think that Tombo was only interested in her because of his obsession with flight. He was interested in her though his friends teased him and took opportunities to include her in his life.

I think it's because how Tombo took it, being confused about if how he looks is really that funny, and the first thought I got in my head was that she was low key bullying him, because she was giving him the cold shoulder throughout the movie, and real life is much more cruel and non accepting. Can't just laugh at someone playfully without another taking it to heart or it having a darker meeting.

Gigi is the inner voice of Kiki, all things she hide in her heart and hesitation come out of Gigi, all english speakers take this ending like a "depressive" ending but I thing they didn't see all the picture, for example Kiki didn't just lost his flaying abilities also she lost her conection with Gigi, the cat don't hang out with she anymore but when Kiki recover his magic powers the cat returns to interact with her, to me feels like a chear full ending, a girl who finds his place in a world bigger that she, balancing tradition, magic, friends, modernity and puberty.

I think Jiji losing his voice has something to do with her saying "He's all yours!" Or "You can have him!" to the Female cat when she decides to walk for the delivery before losing her flying power. She basically freed him of his servitude think of Jiji as more of a Familiar as opposed to an ordinary black housecat.

I first saw the Disney dub of this, which is where they added in Jiji's line. I don't think I would have understood the reason he still couldn't talk. I thought Kiki could understand him because she was a witch, not because she was a child. So I figured if she could fly, she would still be able to talk to Jiji. But I noticed from my first viewing that his mouth wasn't moving, so I guess I was the only one who didn't get the message.

I'm so confused. So the 1998 dubbed version changed the original Japanese music in the opening/ending to American songs and had Jiji voiced by Phill Hartman improvise and say a line at the end instead of meowing. Then there was a 2003 edit which retains the American songs but Jiji meows at the end instead of talking [whats weird about this though, is the way he meows at the end is in Hartman's voice - whereas when Kiki first realises she can't understand jiji, his meow sounds like an actual cat, this confused me cause I thought it meant at the end, Kiki could understand Jiji again but Jiji was making a joke about her previously not understanding him, by 'meowing' in a mocking kind of way] Then there is 2010 dub in which the original Japanese songs from the 1989 release and with Jiji meowing at the end (instead of talking.) However, there are a lot of other changes to the score and the sound quality is not as good. AND there is another English Dub version with different actors. ahhh, I get so anal about these things, I know there are bigger things to stress about but man this is really winding me up, I just watched the film on Netflix UK was already freaking out about the subtle language difference between the Japanese audio compared to the English compared to the English subtitles. I don't know whats going on but it seems there needs to be another release with the option of both original music and American music with the 2003 audio dub but with the original Jiij meowing at the end (or at least make it clear that he's meowing and not just "saying" a "meow") Without the 2010 poor score changes or loss of quality. But what about the other Dub with different actors! what's that like?! MY BRAIN HURTS. The only solution is to move to Japan, learn the language and cultural nuances then acquire the original true version of the film and watch it there to fully understand the film as it was meant to be viewed.

William A I definitely think she could understand him at the end. Previously when she couldn’t understand him, neither could the viewer. However at the end as Jiji approaches Kiki you hear him say “Kiki can you hear me?” Or something like that and then when he sits on her shoulder the meow is almost a fake one, like you said, mocking that she couldn’t understand him previously. It didn’t sound like the meows jiji did before when she couldn’t understand him. So yeah, I defo think she could understand him at the end!

You missed the mark on this one. The film is not about overcoming adversity, although that is what liberals who have no desire to upset the exploitative capitalist system or labor relations want us to take away from it. No, the movie is about alienating labor and the need for more leisure.
