Spinningwheel Spa day: maintenance, cleaning & crafting homemade Wood Polish/Conditioner

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello friends! My Spinningwheels are in need of some cleaning, caring, polishing and conditioning. So that is what we are going to do today. We will first clean our wooden, mostly vintage, spinning wheels, with a clean microfiber cloth and then make our own wood polish or wood conditioner with beeswax and olive oil. Some true DIY beeswax alchemy, or magic you may call it. I'll demonstrate how to whip up a luxurious polish that will nourish and protect the wooden surfaces of your spinning wheels (or any other wooden treasures you may have!). It's a sustainable and eco-friendly way to give your spinningwheels a beautiful, long-lasting finish. We will give our beloved spinningwheels a Spa Day with these 100% natural ingredients. This way they will last me a lifetime and will be able to spin thousands of kilometers of yarn for me. Whether you're a seasoned spinner or just starting out, keeping your spinning equipment clean and well-maintained is essential for smooth, efficient spinning sessions.

    Another comment. There was a horror movie out when I was a girl. It was titled “Car” I think. It was about a possessed car named Christine. When you told us your first wheel’s name was Christine, that movie came to mind. You certainly have picked an interesting passion, it’s a tad scary the more I listen to you clean your girls!

    I think the original Rachel is very fond of greenery & so perhaps some vines with perhaps rainbow flowers?? Or make it all over jungly leaves like Rachel’s bedroom and then paint rainbow flowers?? 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️🌱✨🌿🍃 It could be lovely and her painting techniques are on her channel, maybe to help guide the process/inspiration? 🤔

    I'm all for painting Rachel with folksy floral motifs, I think that would look so good on her! I'm now also reminded that I have not waxed my unfinished wheel since I got her two (three?) years ago, so I think it's time to give her a polish!

    The only spinning wheel i have was handmade in the 70' but its previous owner also gave it a hefty coat of paint. Like, all over. Its pretty sloppily done (my wife and I call it "the landlord special"). She spins great so I have no need to mess with her any time soon, but someday I /will take off that paint and either reveal the wood or give it a nicer paint job.

Consider me up for waxing my Bertha after I return home from my weekend away... where I shall infact be cleaning and waxing my daughter's new 'old' furniture acquisition. Quite late but olive oil lives to oxidize so you be best served by food grade mineral oil, Danish oil, or boiled linseed oil for a more natural alternative - although that comes with some flammability cautions. I loved this video!

    I know how much you love to honor your local traditions and culture so if you paint Rachel, maybe you could take inspiration from historical painted regional motifs? You could even look at historical textiles as inspiration.

    Don't paint Rachael until you have an idea that really inspires you and that you feel compelled to do. And you could do it over a long period, like people adding to their tattoo collections. So if you get a great idea for one part of the wheel, or a great idea for one image, do that and then leave it until the next great idea comes along. Also, I love that jumper, the close ups show how soft and shimmery the wool is. It's wildly expensive but organic turpentine is a thing - and it's very different to mineral turpentine. But if you've got a good recipe for wood wax that doesn't need turpentine, it probably doesn't matter. I cheated and bought a jar of wax from Ashfords. It is very nice wax.

    My wheels names are just whimsy (Jezebel, Elizabeth, and Moana). Someone gave me a wheel that they found by a garbage dumpster that was newer model of Jezebel (Louet S10). I named her Isabel as Jezebel's little sister. I repaired Isabel and found her a new home with one of my students. My next wheel will have have either a science fiction name or a fantasy name, since I am thinking of getting an e-spinner to have at my parents' place.

    My mother learned the art of Swiss ‘Bauernmalerei’ - literally translated ‘farmer’s painting’, which is a painting style I think you would appreciate as you mentioned your fondness of folksy motifs. Perhaps it.s something you’d like to investigate if you ever decide to paint something on one of your spinning wheels. She’s out of the country right now (returning this coming October-November), I could ask her if I can take a look at her books of traditional motifs if you’re interested, and email you some designs or pictures. With your artistic flair and knowledge of painting, you would certainly be able to design something absolutely gorgeous, and those patterns might inspire you. As you well know, paint and anything greasy or oily do not really go together. It would be alot of work to remove the wheel, de-grease it, perhaps sand the surfaces you wish to paint, actually do the painting and then, after protecting your work, to re-assemble. Doing it without disassembling would be backbreaking work and might make painting quite difficult. But if you’re game, I have absolutely no doubt the end result would turn that wheel into a heritage piece to treasure even more than now. Thank you for showing the beeswax recipe. My SO has beautiful cutting boards he used to treat with oil. The oil he used isn’t being sold anymore. I was looking for an alternative. Now I’ll just make him sole cutting board ointment. 😊

    Thanks for the wood polish recipe. I'm going to try it but I think I will use canola oil since I want to keep the scent of the bee's wax. I think the olive oil scent will over power the bee's wax perfume.

  • @MijnWolden

    @MijnWolden

    I don't think it overpowers the beeswax; but they make an interesting mix together. It's not overpowering olive oil, but also not overpowering beeswax. I first wanted to use sunflowerseed oil because that also doesn't have as much of a smell, but I didn't have enough of that.

  • @moonbasket
    @moonbasket3 ай бұрын

    Olive oil is a good choice! Some food grade oils can go rancid. I think canola oil and vegetable oil can rot and shouldn't be used for stuff like this, but I'm not positive.

  • @MijnWolden

    With the microfiber cloth I used nothing extra, but I used a little sponge on Bernadette, where she had big black grease stains and I used a bit of water and mild soap there to break up the layers of grease.

    I thought of Sleeping Beauty when you asked if any of your wheels had a knife. Lol! You can still poke yourself with a poisoned spikey thing on a spinning wheel, so beware.

  • @MijnWolden

    @MijnWolden

    3 ай бұрын

    It is a topic of much debate where Sleeping Beauty poked herself. It might be that the flyer hooks were thorns in earlier days, or that she actually got a splinter from the flax she was spinning... Modern wool wheels? You'd really have to do your best to get poked/stabbed by anything on them. I'm very safe in their company :D
