Knit with me: Mill ends to Handspun Chaos Yarn Scarf

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello friends! I got up with a craving for chaos. Luckily I had bought myself a bag of mill ends, assorted scrap bits of wool and spun them all into one chaotic skein of yarn a couple of weeks ago. Today we're taking that yarn and we're knitting ourselves a lovely spring accessory with it: a triangle scarf! In this video I kit the scarf without a pattern, so join me while I figure out how to draft my own triangular scarf, shawl, wrap, however you want to call it. It's going to be a simple garter stitch knit, which accentuates the chaotic nature of our handspun yarn.

In your reveal sequence, I thought the scarf was perfect just as it is. Not having a matching tip was not at all evident. It just look very fun and flowing. If it were mine, I would call it finished without adding a matching narrower tip. It seems more goblin-y just as it is. harpingJanet

I knit like this, too! Well, more often like this when my chronic pain flares in my hands - it seems to be the way to knit that involves the least amount of movement. 😊 Love the millspun scarf! I'm doing this with the ten stitch blanket. Also you should know you have become a fanous quote in my house. Your attitude of "I can spin more yarn!" when you run out mid-project has been said multiple times here and it brings great joy - from someone that is on a pendulum between "aren't natural sheep colours perfect?" to "lets use all the colours at once!" both in crafting and in dressing. 🎉

Wow that's how I knit and I didn't know what it was called! I just googled to double check and I saw your other video on knitting wrong and I have an eerily similar experience! I was taught crochet as a child and did lots of it until my twenties when I learned to knit. Felt like I just invented this style myself although I'm obviously not the first to do so. Reversing ssk and k2tog is so worth it. I had some trouble with twisted stitches at first when switching from circular knitting to flat but that was also worth the bother. So glad to know the name of my clan! Thank you for this news!

ooooh! I love your scarf! the colours are great - obviously - but that shape also works really well - I'll have to remember that (mwahaha). I didn't obsess about my personal style until I started sewing and knitting most of my own clothing (I still buy some things but not many) and now I think about it constantly. It brings my life joy and wonder and I (and absolutely no one else, lol) love it and all my outfits. My style is usually a mish-mash of vintage and history bounding - I have three main asthetics: - Aspiring Hedge-witch - Your Hippy Mum (or possibly this should be Hippy Grandmother as people my Mum's age are now almost all grandparents, yikes) - Queer Academia (i.e. dark academia but brighter and more gay) which I wear when I have to look sensible for work.

I was originally going to weave a scarf with it but my daughter wanted to see it knit and who am I too upset her lol. It's all over the place, but I can't imagine not being able to dress as any one of those four. I love the scarf/spesjaal. And you dealt with the long blue and white section perfectly. If that were my scarf one OCD side of me would want to find some yarn to finish off the tip. The part of me that is OCD about things being autological would want to leave the tip unfinished, because that reinforces the idea of chaos. And there is a part of me that is half-remembering the long lost days of my youth when I might have worn and never quite got around to finishing some garments that I'd made... I would recommend that you put the pattern on Ravelry, perhaps with instructions on how to spin chaos yarn.

What a lovely scarf! Personally the non-symetrical edges would bother me. More so physically that the edges wouldn't match in my hands than visually. I vote you make another chaos skein and just use a small portion to finish this scarf and then make a chaos hat or something to go with it for next winter.

Not to be unnecessarily nice here, but I have to admit that when my friend recommended your channel and I watched your first videos, I LOVED your style from the very beginning! I'm a Jeans and longsleeve type of person and it has taken me YEARS to realise that you can get shirts ... with prints. (I am not kidding, I'm mostly wearing unicoloured shirts). I have no idea what style I'd like, I'd LOVE to get inked, but I have been overthinking getting a tattoo for the past twenty years or so. ;) I love my handknit socks and shawls and scarves though and I want to knit my own sweaters now and see what I like. :) You scarf looks absolutely AMAZING AND UTTERLY BEAUTIFUL! I'd leave it as it is. It gives another layer of character. It's a design feature! (Also, thanks to you, I dug out my spindle for the first time in YEARS.)

@@MijnWolden: Frankly, I think a lot of uniforms are forms of "micro-abuse". ("Micro-abuse", the close and unpleasant cousin of "micro-aggressions", I just decided to add the word to the English vocabulary). They're almost never well designed for the weather, they're almost always made either mostly or entirely of synthetics, and, in recent years, the trend appears to be towards making them all black. Now, there is a place for black clothes - but, typically, if I am wearing one black garment, I want the others to be in contrasting colours, including some bright ones.

My personal fashion style? Erm…. Eclectic Ethnically oriented? A mix between casual office chic and statement pieces you can’t easily find in Belgium Depending on mood, inroads into Comfy slouch, as in the oldest, bumpiest, roomiest sweater with a pair of pants Methusalem would have been proud of - admittedly for hole office days with the camera off during remote meetings. Parties and formal gigs are met full force by vintage glam mixed with pieces that have strong ethnic influences hailing from the countries I’ve lived in, thrifted va-va-voom shoes and crazy jewellery because, well, I always wear crazy jewellery. Do I pay attention to my wardrobe choices? Most days. Always when heading out in public. Am I concerned about shape, fit, balancing out of my figure? Of course. Because I’m built like a Formula 1 car: next to nothing on top and everything on the lower part of the chassis. A plunging neckline reveals the colour of my shoes because there’s nothing up top to obstruct the line of sight. The ta-tas are a study in minimalism. Unless I add stuffing. (Hand knit fake bra stuffers are awesome because they’re washable and breathe). So yes, yes and yes again: attention for fit and style are a must or the end result is definitely unbalanced and prone to slippage. Slippage is undesirable in a work setting. Or in line at the supermarket. Colour is a big thing. Sad beige makes me look like something the cat dragged in and that should have been buried three days ago. So does carrot top green and mustard yellow. I try to choose colours that at least make me look moderately alive, preferably healthy. I do my due diligence to pick colour combinations that don’t clash and cause the enamel to chip of my peers’ teeth. A minimum of vanity is part of self care. And of not wanting to inflict trauma on society. When in doubt, I consult my very stylish daughter. If she nixes an outfit, I listen and let her re-style it. Edit: I love that scarf! I love pieces that have many colours because it makes it easier to combine with my entire wardrobe! I’d scour through my stash to find another colour to finish it rather than frogging it and resizing the decreases.

@@MijnWolden - I happen to be lucky enough to have a very wise mother, who once told me that if it’s written in Christian faith that we should love our neighbour as we love ourselves, we need to start loving ourselves at least a little bit, because otherwise, that comparison wouldn’t make sense to start with. It kind of has self love built into it. I wasn’t overly fond of myself at that point in life and needed those words. 😊
