How to get better at woolen drafting / long draw spinning yarn: practice vlog

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello friends! Recently I got myself I really beautiful bit of fiber to spin. It was a braid from Regenbogenwolle.de, a scrumptious mix of Southdown and Zwartbles wool. While sampling it on my support spindle I thought: wow, if there is any wool that would be a great candidate to practice my long draw or woolen drafting spinning techniques it is this one. So that is what we are doing today: we are getting better at long draw spinning, practising ourselves in woollen spinning. This is however not a tutorial, but do feel free to spin along with me!

I am a worsted spinner at heart. However, one summer for my Master Spinner Program, I bought 4 Suffolk fleeces, washed them, and spent at least an hour every evening making rollags with my hand cards on my front porch watching the sun go down with a glass of ice tea. I made hundreds of them and spun them woolen, working on my long draw and by the end of the summer, I got pretty good. To be honest, I still prefer worsted spinning but push come to shove, I can do woolen spinning.

I started out with a short forward draw (as most people do I suppose) but I have now done long draw for the last few projects and am loving it more and more! I will probably still do some projects with a sort forward but I think a long draw would now be my default.

I prefer short forward and worsted because i love consistency. However, I took my combing "waste" from 2 different breed and carded them together and gave long draw a go. To my surprise I was able to get a consistently thin single esp when I used a smaller diameter whorl. I found I needed more twist in long draw than in short forward. It also spun up a lot faster. You taught me about the plying bracelet trick which I didn't know. Thanks so much

I can definitely see the difference in how floofy your beautiful yarn is after wet setting and thwacking. So far I've been a worsted spinner, only tried long draw once with some Shetland fiber. You are inspiring me to do more experiments with long draw. And yes, you taught me something new, with the double plying bracelet. That will be so much kinder to my middle finger! So when I first learned to spin, I could not get the hang of short forward draw. Only when I tried spinning from the fold did I get it, and I fell hard for the craft. Now I can easily do SFD and I do really like it, but there's something so satisfying about long draw that makes a special kind of serotonin in my brain hahaha. That said I have never tried it on combed top like that, only ever from the fold, or with rolags that I make on my handcards. From the fold is an interesting semi technique, I noticed that when I do that it is still smoother/more consistent than with a rolag. If you're interested in more yummy colours and cool fiber preps, Frau Wöllfchen has a great selection for very good prices! Tho maybe I wish I knew what to do with all my single skeins... Get some more of those braids, continue practising your woollen spinning until you have enough for a wonderful, fluffy jumper. I'd go for a textured pattern, like some cables. The details of the texture wouldn't be visible except up close but the overall texturing with the way the colours are distributed within the yarn would be gorgeous. Plan B: I'd try making that lovely yarn into a nice, cosy hat. Again, for the textural depth, a crocheted hat might be a good idea. EDIT: To date, I've always been a short draw, worsted spinner. 2nd EDIT: I didn't know about the plying bracelet trick, either - I don't think it's well known. But I struggle even with the basic plying bracelet. I end up plying really slowly (as opposed to my two bobbins on the lazy Kate speed, where the wheel is in danger of going into orbit) and breaking the yarn frequently.
