Frogging a Project and Knitting a better Vintage sweater with Recycled Yarn (1970 does 1940 Vintage)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello friends! Sometimes I have to admit that not every project I knit is a succes. And that was the case with a Vintage 1940s knit sweater I made in March. So, half a year later, we're coming to terms with the fact that I will need to frog this thing and make something new. And that is thus what we shall be doing in this video: knit a new vintage inspired sweater with my handspun.
The pattern I used for knitting this sweater is a model from the vintage knitting magazine Ariadne from February 1979. It's a seventies does forties type of sweater, and the needle sizes seem almost perfect for this high grist yarn that I spun.
A video where I spin said yarn: • Clearing out my bobbin...
A video where I knit that other sweater: • How (NOT) to knit a 19...

If it is a finished thing and it was a mistake I rip right away. If I am mid project and I mess up I give myself a week to deal with it. So how much yarn was left from the mistake sweater? I like your reknit much better.

so 2 things. 1. I like the sweater without any extras it really lets the yarn speak. 2. You did take an additional step when frogging and knitting up the new sweater, someone I know that is certainly not me, did the unholy thing and just knitted directly from the project that needed frogging without even balling it up first. 😇

Knitting (and handicrafts in general!) really teach us that hard lesson of doing lots and lots of work on something, and then ripping it back to start over. I try to think of it as "character building" (that is, once I finish sulking about it)! You did such a beautiful job transforming this sweater. And that yarn you picked up on your trip will be stunning in a sweater!

I think not frogging the entire project kind of makes sense. It keeps a significant part of the yarn as untouched as possible. Call it sensibly scheduled handling time to when it needs to be done. It’s part of “just in time” management of labour in a business setting, so why not translate it to outside of your day job? 😇 Your new sweater looks lovely! And… don’t call your less than successful projects mistakes. “Tout chef d’oeuvre mérite un brouillon” (every work of art merits a trial version/first draft is the loose translation for anyone who doesn’t speak French).

Your sweater turned out lovely. They way the colors turned out is lovely and it doesn't need embroidery, in my opinion. And really couldn't we all use beautiful basics. If you wanted, I think the answer to your shoulder drama is padding. I think some shoulder pads would make that shoulder seam sit a little higher and give you more poof. But like I said your sweater is great either way!

Going ahead and making it without meeting guage and going up a size is me right now with a cardigan I'm working on. I'm gonna use my alpaca yarn one way or another. Still can't figure out how people just sit for 2 hour car rides. I can do max an hour before I need entertainment. Or a nap, but I'm not good at that. The result is cute!! I love this video!!! I know some people never do this kind of thing, because they think they have "wasted" the previous knitting. But to have something you love and will wear much more seems like the most sensible option for me. I have my first ever attempt at a cardigan waiting for me to reknit it. I didn't swatch or use the right needles or pick the right size. With fingering weight yarn. I knit almost the entire thing (with thin stripes as well!!), before ripping it all out. I need to do another swatch, but the needles are in another project. So whenever I finish that project will be when I restart the cardigan.

@@gemmaf_ Exactly! Although I thought of it once, when I was knitting a sweater that turned out too big, I asked my best friend whether it would fit her. Oh man, I NEED to add this pattern/book to my collection! I hope they printed it in English. While I'd want it for the dots, you are absolutely right to leave them off. Those colors are PERFECT for this sweater, and it reads so 70s, but without being in your face about it. The shaping is so subtle, and yet so distinct to the time. I'm always so fascinated by vintage pieces taking their cues from even earlier vintage periods.

Heel mooi geworden 🐑 I've made so very many mistakes. I remember in the eighties I knitted this sweater with a victorian girl playing tennis on the front. Then I made the sleeves and started knitting the word "tennis game" up the sleeve, but then by the time the sleeve was long enough, it only spelled "tennis ga". My brother laughed so very hard and totally embarressed me, sooooo I threw the whole thing away 😢. I feel so bad about throwing it away. 😜

It doesn't take me long to rip it out when I'm not happy with it. To start again, that depends on having another pattern in mind. My current hand-spun sweater has been frogged 3 times, and now I am happy with it but isn't finished yet because I have to spin one more skein of yarn to be able to finish it. My second bobbin of singles is this week's project. Hopefully I can get it plied this coming weekend and will be back to knitting to finish the sweater soon after. Cheers-Laura

I usually know pretty quickly if something is going wrong, but I'm usually reluctant to frog it and just push on to a disappointing finish. Then it can take months or years for me to frog it and start over. I have a few skeins of yarn that I spiral plied with with a multi coloured cotton, it looks great, but I have never found a way to use it and I am now (2 years later) considering pulling it apart to reuse the single.

If its knitting I have been known to frog and start reknitting in the very same evening I have decided its a failure; but for sewing? get it out of my sight. Its getting banished to The Box of Doom, if the mistake is more than one seam im not going back, I dont even own a seam ripper. Ill keep it because fabric is expensive tho.
