Let's Dye a Dress with a 2000 Year Old Technique and 50 year old ingredients | Batik Dinosaurs

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello friends! My greataunt gave me a vintage mailorder box full of crafts. And my patrons voted that I would attempt to use the cold water textile dyes that came in that box. So, here we are; we are attempting a batik dye on a thrifted linen dress. Does that make it a thriftflip?
We are trying batik, which is an ancient technique of resist-dyeing. By putting beeswax on your cloth you protect some parts from the dye, and thus creating patterns. You can draw with a pen or stamp the pattern on. We're doing the latter today with some stainless steel cookiecutters in the shape of dinosaurs. Because this Barbie loves dinosaurs.
The project doesn't entirely go to plan, but I think the endresult is still cute. What do you say?

I did batiking as elementary school student too. As an adult I've taken my international students at the university to the Royal Tyrell Museum(Canada's main dinosaur museum) on field trips to see the dinosaurs. We have always had a blast on these trips. PS: You can still over dye your Barbie dress with a modern tie-dye kit, although I think the pink is beautiful and definitely a success.

This was so fun! As a connoisseur of vintage craft kits, this is something I have not yet come across! But I'd probably be intimidated by it even if I had. The dinos are a stroke of genius! My favorite dino is the stegosaurus because it's the most fun to draw. But as a kid, I liked all of the long necks. I think the dress is adorable! But if you find that you don't want to wear it much, it looks like it could be cut into a really cute skirt and halter top set. Then you could break up all the pink more easily.

Barbie dinosaur!!!! I love it very much as someone having a Barbie summer and someone who is very pro-dinosaur. I vote you wear it to all the things. My favorite dinosaur is a velociraptor because 1) Jurassic park (yes, I know it's not accurate) and 2) more realistically, I like to think about them being small, poofy, feathery carnivores stalking their prey.

Batik!!! My mum, her two sisters and two brothers attended the "Scuola d'Arte"in town as at their time there was that one and a couple more only(I write it amongst commas because I don't know exactly if Art School really express the things they did in the 70's there ).she and my aunts did a lot of Batik and always told me how fun it was but also very challenging. And results are beautiful!!! I always wanted to try too. I love dinosaurs since I was in the kindergarten my favourite is the Triceratopus (I wrote it wrong I know). Love the dress, maybe because recently I put some order in my music and listened to lot of 90's hit that made me nostalgic, and as you said the dress is a bit 90's style but it's lovely and it fits perfect on you, shape and colours are simply made for you!!!!! What tummy? You might not be the biggest fan of the colour, but it does look really good on you. The dress is fabulous, whimsical, and fun. You might feel you have issues with the fit, but it actually ‘irons out’ any perceived generosity around the tummy area because of its proportions. Attention is drawn elsewhere. So if you feel comfortable in it, wear it. On the subject of batik and getting rid of wax: I’ve lived in Nigeria and in Malaysia. Batik of various methods were made there. To get rid of the wax, not just one but several hot water baths were used. In order not to waste water, the subsequent water baths were allowed to cool off so the hardened wax could then be collected. Both the water and the wax would then be re-used. As a last and final measure the cloth would be ironed between two absorbent layers. This was of course for large batch batik projects. For just one item, it would get quite long-winded to really cool multiple water baths and re-use the water. Still, if you have the time it’s a valid option. About the wax used for batik: I don’t remember the recipe used in Nigeria I was just a small kid at the time. In Malaysia they use a blend of beeswax and resin. Favourite dinosaur? Actually I’d say the shark. Because it’s managed to survive up to today.

Using cookie cutters for the design is so clever! I think the dress came out cute too! The color looks good on you even if it is on the intimidating side, haha. I wonder if boiling it completely submerged and then letting the water cool overnight while dress stayed under the water would have worked? (my logic being that it would harden at room temp and then you could just scoop out the wax off the top and then free the dress from the water.) My favorite dino is the Archaeopteryx!

Your dress looks great on you! I would have never thought of using cookie cutters. I have done batik and find it fun and sometimes frustrating. I noticed your wax didn't crack when you were moving it. So I suspect there is more than just bees and paraffin wax in it so it is possible you were supposed to just scrape off the wax. I have only ever used waxed from an artist that has their own formula and it has always cracked.
