Hi Neil, I came across your post just by accident. I thoroughly enjoyed your Triumph 2500PI. She is in lovely condition & runs well. I love the laid back pase of your post. The beauty of the maintenance is that you can do it yourself as, you can get to it with a simple tool & screwdriver set to do the job. My 2000TC is with the mechanic as he is doing a major overhaul to the engine & drive chain. I can't to get back behind the wheel. Thank you for sharing.

I had one of these, a genuine 2.5 PI Mk 2 in Valencia Blue with beige interior when I was a uni student, at a time when it wasn't considered cool for a young single college guy to be tooling around in a large family saloon more intended for middle-aged business execs and their family members. However, it was reliable, spacious, comfy and fairly quick (for its time), at least compared to most of the anemic 4-pot Austin and Morris etc motors on the road back then, and my dates seem to be impressed (they probably thought I was flushed with cash and that some of that would be coming their way). Mine was a manual with overdrive which encouraged sporty driving and fast motorway cruising. It just ate up the miles. One of your viewers described it as a "4-seater sports car" and that's how I drove it. Styled by Michelotti and fitted with Stag alloys it was a handsome car. I still miss it. However I exchanged it for a 1976 Stag (which I still have) so that was some compensation to see it go :)

@@NeilIrving1973 be worth getting the injection working if you can as Pi automatics are very rare. Mine was automatic but I converted it to manual overdrive. In some ways I wish I hadn't. Definitely slightly smoother as an auto. You probably know this but if you do convert back to petrol injection, make sure you renew the seals in the drive from the distributor to the metering unit. If they fail the engine sump can slowly fill with petrol diluting the oil and overfilling the sump .

With a good friend and his "colour tune" we balanced them, took them to a garage to have the final fettle and they said they would not touch them, as they were already spot on. On the PI injection system on these pre- '73 CP engine cars, with the metering unit pref. calibrated by experts like KMI Injection in Beds., with super unleaded petrol and a lead additive, (never use standard unleaded on a PI engine as these cars were meant for 5-star 100 RON leaded petrol), and fitted with manual/overdrive, a good healthy compression engine and most importantly, using a stock, good quality 20/50 oil and not synthetic oil, (as was recommended by one of the club garage mechanics who thought using fully synthetic oil was good for protection, when in fact all it does is pass the rings when driving hard and burn, causing the plugs to foul and in-turn, blunt the performance significantly), and using Champion N9YC spark plugs which actually work best on these engines, plus a Lucas Gold sports coil and decent electronic ignition, these cars can potentially hit 125 mph on a decent stretch of road, (in the right country of course), and reach 60 in around 8-seconds. Also, the stability with the aerodynamic lines of these cars (rear window and rear tail scoops and narrow frontal profile) puts them in a class above many rivals back in the day. Late afternoons in the summer heat would get the best performance too. Blistering pick-up above 80 in direct top. Another tip is to avoid the urethane bushes that everyone insists on fitting. These completely lose the car it's class-leading compliant ride. Rubber is the only material that should be used, - period. Road surface vibration transmission increases when using urethane bushes; affecting ride comfort as well as road noise intensity. I had my '72 PI saloon 12-years and regretted selling it the very next day!

This is the excellence that was around in the UK before German industrialists paid off British management and started their new wave of propaganda promoting what were totally inferior German cars. Yeah, they were. All meaningful internationally viable cars built in Britain (and the US) were stillborn, or to be precise, aborted. Despite its humble appearance, the Triumph 1300 was the shape of things to come with all of its safety features and innovative features copied many years later. No car before it was such a radical look at a compact family car, where every feature made it through to production. People need to take another look very carefully at the Triumph 1300. it's been overlooked and not given its proper place in automotive history. The triumph Stag, should have been an absolute world beater, deliberately aborted because of "in-house arguing" resulting in the wrong engine being used. Another fake "oops" from the management. The Rover SD1, not produced in enough numbers, and those that were produced had terrible build quality all because of "industrial unrest". (interference from abroad and management collusion) Another fake "oops" from Management. Please compare the performance and handling of this Triumph 2.5 Pi to the wallowy stodgy BMW's and Mercs of the day, you'll see just how modern the Triumph feels and you'll soon realise that the German cars had more in common with an Austin Cambridge than anything else. The German cars had vague worm and roller steering, high centre of gravity, low ground clearance (what kind of designer could arrive at THAT blunder ? High centre of gravity AND low ground clearance ????) AND they were SO unreliable. The average Ford was way more reliable back then but the "Panzer" myth started to kick in. Yes, Myth. Germany has always been the best ............ at Propaganda, The rest is history. We fell for it hook line and sinker. This Triumph 2.5Pi was just one of many excellent products stillborn because of corrupt British management and German propaganda. The Japanese however, just build great cars.

Pity really, loss its originality. Like many PI's the petrol injection has been removed because so many people never took the time to learn the tricks of maintaining the system

My dad took the fuel injection system off for fuel economy and road side reliability, he did a lot of car shows and club runs, to be honest not much loss in performance, still got the pi cam shaft which adds a bit of timing, as to the originality, auto box replaces the 4 speed non overdrive, lowered and uprated springs and shocks with polly bushes through out modified rack mounts and half shafts , ss exhaust, Ford seats and different wheel and tyre combo, for me it's the sound, feel and smell of any old car

@@NeilIrving1973 Hi Neil. You mentioned the sound, Oh you yes, I loved the sound, and the minilites wheels look brilliant too. I was interested in your seats they are a pretty good match - Which Ford do they come from? Your list of upgrades looks impressive and could be handy for me. ..... I drove a PI for several years when I was young, and just loved it. Here in NZ we only had PI's as either Auto or Man O/D (never the just 4 spd). I was a mechanic back in the day (semi retired dairyfarmer now) and I specialized in tuning the Pi Triumphs and man could we make them go. Now as I'm 66 years old and looking to get into a classic for some fun, a Triumph (preferably PI) or a Rover 3.5S is still remarkably affordable compared to most classics. So a 'PI' is high on the list, but hard to find here in NZ as most have been changed to T/C versions.. So I'm thinking of finding a 2.5S and fitting a retro (looking) EFI system and spec-ing up the car to lift performance and appeal. I understand retro EFI kits are available from the UK. ......... good to chat... Andy

@@andyrogers4866 hi Andy, the seats are out of a Ford Sierra 2000e, not sure if you had them in NZ, most of the EFI systems I have seen are homemade, a friend of mine used mostly Opel Senetor parts, injector port have to be machined, he's made a tool for it, I have an instruction manual somewhere, if I find it I will share a link, small world story, we have family in NZ, North and South island, my grandfather used to visit often, and got friendly with someone from the NZ triumph saloon register club, a Paul Deniston, he went to a few shows with him, lol stopped him feeling homesick and missing is own big 6 😊
