    Love them Brian. I now have the S2100, smart checker & 1x 4s 2200 1x 3s 2200, 2x 3200 6s all 30’s The only thing I did not like was that you need an expensive (A$29) EC3 to EC5 adapter for the smart features when charging the EC5 to the S2100. I do have the standard adapters but not the smart one ( cable) and no stock in Australia. I ordered one with the cheapest postage available to here from a us hobby shop

Plus I’m still trying to figure out how to test my small batteries for my super cub 2 S I thinking I’m going out to make up some kind of an adapter for it. No, run it down to 3.3 VDC (per cell) or if you want to be real nice to your packs, 3.6 VDC (Per cell). This will help keep the chemistry in the packs good.

I also got the DX8e transmitter bc itll handle my dream plane and everything else between. Ill probably get the 2100 charger but i had a question. Do the smart batteries self discharge to storage voltage or do you need to manually do that yourself? Thanks!

    And I thought taking up the hobby of flying, the hardest part would be flying the plane. But learning about the batteries is mind melting lol. I mean I need to learn how to even plug in the battery to the charger. Why do I need to discharge batteries or store them at a certain charge level? This is all confusing. Not to mention the chance of batteries catching fire during a charge. That's why they sell Lipo bags 🤦

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    Жыл бұрын

    Lipo bags do NOT to stop fires! They MIGHT slow down the heat and smoke damage and POSSIBLY stop the spread to another battery, but I challenge you to get a lead into the bag. They're (speaking of balance leads) like 2 inches long, maybe shorter on most, and you're supposed to run the battery into a BAG? Yeah, if that's the case, EVERY mfg'er might want to rethink their design. Think "EVERY" - they ALL do this, and that should tell you something. They don't think you'll be using them... If they did, they'd be making them to be capable to use bags. I expect that your leads will be dangerously warn by 3-6 months, which may lead to a risk of fire, if you use those things. The mfg'ers don't like to talk about it, since they're (speaking of the bags) just an Insurance CYA, but I don't really believe in them, if you ask me...someone with literally hundreds of lipos (some very large) in my home. Besides, SMART batteries are going to give you an edge on safety, in my opinion, in that they help keep the CHEMISTRY right, I.E. getting the battery voltage to 3.80 VDC (or 3.90 VDC - Gen2) when they're not in use. This keeps the lipo cells in the most chemically stable state, and prolongs the life of the battery. The MOST important safety behavior is NOT bags, it's discharging the packs at the right rate, charging at the right rate, setting the packs to storage voltage when not in use, but the MOST important and difficult thing to do - SAFELY DISPOSE OF THEM WHEN THEY'RE DAMAGED! This is the reason why people have fires, I believe...they don't get rid of the packs when they're bad, or damaged. They use them a bunch more, to the point where not only don't they work, but then they get to being dangerous! P.S. I've never had one catch fire, unless I expect it, like after a rough crash, and the pack smokes, or when I dispose of them, I shoot them through and release the puff, to be safe (after discharging or allowing them to be "used up"), then they can be properly discarded...you need to check your local rules though, since I'm not sure where you are. If you really want to be SAFEST, spend some time and work with a "spent" lipo. Learn how they're put together...use PPE, and in a safe environment with good ventilation, gloves, glasses and/or face shield, and take one apart. Then you can see what's going on, and where the vulnerabilities are. I've don this a number of times (in our "NON Plane" Playlist) to help people understand what they look like, how they're made, and how to FIX them too (if they're fixable). Understanding where the danger is, will help you to understand how to gauge your level of response to it, and help guide you into a peace that you've done everything you think is necessary to feel comfortable with the risks. YOU have to be willing to take some risks...for goodness sake, they're using BUTANE in our refrigerators now! There's lots of crazy dangerous things around us that we assume are "safe", but I try to help how I can. All that being said, I do try to giving too much "SAFETY" advice, since I don't want to have trouble sleeping, knowing that I told someone something wrong, and they lost their home, or child, or family, etc - that would be terrible, and I know that people HAVE lost homes, but it's a very rare occasion, at least as it pertains to Lipo caused fires. Please, use care, and if you think lipo bags are the way to go - DO IT. Lipo Safety Charging Bags... Horizon Hobby bit.ly/3J3C762 Amazon amzn.to/3mCCbSX Banggood bit.ly/3LoWKwH

    18;28. Talking about the weird temp. I saw that as well when I hooked up a 6S battery to it, thought that was weird. Came up with a S.W.A.G. I noticed that the last time I charged the battery was about 3 days ago. I also noticed the entire battery was cool, and it was only warm up on the end where the wires came out. (This was a G2 battery, so no balance lead) Saw the self discharge was set for 72 hours. Here's where I thought, If it's discharging, it's probably creating some level of heat, so maybe that's what that was? 22;00 "Exception record, Idunno what it is, I don't care what it is" Wow man...lol (Scientific Wild Ass Guess)

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    I used to all the time, but lately I've been using receivers with some level of telemetry, so I can keep an eye on the flight pack voltage. If you were to use one, I'd set the warning for 3.6VDC on a prop plane, and respect the warning, and maybe 3.8VDC on an EDF jet, since they seem to drop the voltage way quicker at the end.

    I think they're a total waste of time, BUT you can make up your own mind. My feelings are, if it's gonna burn, I'm gonna get a warning, but I might be wrong. If my lipos go up, it's gonna be a bad day. I'm not going to live in fear, but I'm also not going to do thing that I KNOW are dangerous. Some get REAL serious about lipo safety, then they fling around their batteries by the lead to throw them in and out of bags and all that screwing around isn't easy on the lipos either. Just my 2 cents...

    Hi Brian, Thank you and your camera crew for the great information! I'm new to RC Flying and your channel. My question: Just for my understanding here you said the smart batteries are better, they don't get puffy, is that because they self discharge? And is that why they feel hot on one end? I'm guessing this is what prolongs their life over those older batteries you mentioned. Thank you!

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    Жыл бұрын

    They CAN still puff, but they won't puff without cause ;) Sorry if I wasn't clear. The auto-discharge is what keeps them from puffing without cause...I can still puff a pack by discharging it way too hard in an EDF jet - I promise, but if you have an unused battery that puffs, you will be pissed, and this SMART technology helps to avoid this by keeping the cells at an optimal voltage, thus the chemistry is as stable as possible. We've had good luck over the last couple years...but we have killed a few...not that I HAVE KILLED them...and we have had a couple that lost a cell over the course of a year + of sitting, but the rate of failure has been minuscule compared to our other brands.

    Hi Brian. Question on the Smart Chargers. Im looking into the S1200 or the S1500 model because I will be getting 6S batteries. Given everything is thr same, Will the 500W charges faster than the 200W? 2nd question will the 200W be good enough for the 6S? Thanks

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    1) Yes 500 Watts means more power than the 200 Watts. 2) Short answer, PROBABLY....if you're using packs like I have, now up to 7000mAh 6S, you will be fine, but if you're trying to cram juice into that lipo when you arrive at the flying field, as some do, you will want the bigger size for time reasons. why the stock battery doesn't come with a balance lead. The DX18 battery can't be charged outside the TX. And the charger that came with the TX puts out 14Volts DC for a 7.4 volt battery which over charges the stock battery. Any upgrade battery which fits this TX that has a balance lead?

    The "charger" (AC ADAPTER, right????) that came with the Tx puts out what it puts out, since there's probably a voltage divider circuit inside. If you're concerned, plug a DMM into the leads on the battery plug (in the back of the Tx) and plug in the AC Adapter to the Tx - check it out ;)

    When they get out of balance, I'll take them apart and make a smaller pack, or I'll use them in an RC Car or for testing... They can take a few hours to balance...but then if they lose balance every time you use them, the cell is probably bad.

    Hi Brian, ? I purchased that new G2 Smart charger 2100. My question is if I buy G2 smart batteries and using the new NX8 transmitter doesn’t it give you all that information on the transmitter? I’m getting back into RC after being out of it, for about 25 years. All my equipment that I own is 72 MHz and is obsolete. I used to fly on nitro powered aeroplanes, and I can’t bend down to start them, fill them up with fuel, then using the electric starter and taking off the glow plug starter.That is the reason I want to go electric and just bring a tall stand to hook up the battery. Thanks in advance for your reply. 🙏

    This part of telemetry data comes from three (or four) pieces of equipment... 1) Battery 2) Receiver 3) Transmitter 4) ESC - only if the Receiver doesn't already handle it. The telemetry data is setup mostly automatically now for you, but you have to have all the right pieces in your plane.
