as a guy who has been in RC since the early 80's, i say the biggest thing i want with batteries & chargers, is no more plug interface issues. im tired of needing a plug for this car, that car, this truck or that battery , & on & on. its the damn cell phone charger situation, except with RC, & it wasnt a serious issue until the 2000's. before that it was pretty much 2 plugs, now its 10, & my body weight in octopus adapters, plug ends, solder & irons, shrink tubing, & anyone who knows rc knows what im talking about. features are great, but if you want consumers to be excited, you need to make their lives easier , while giving them function & good performance.

These are really nice but always check the settings in the Smart Battery either with the updated (via firmware update) or new G2 charger or using the XBC100 checker (which also needs to have its firmware updated). Be sure to set your desired parameters for auto-storage time-frame, storage charge level and desired charge rate. I like the new G2 family (need more members!). IMHO: I think the value proposition is good for what you really get.

I think the concessions outweigh the benefits. The balance lead is used for many peripherals, including a lipo alarm, which is still important to use if one has an model that is not using the Smart technology. A standard lipo checker uses the balance lead, and so now, modelers are forced to use the Smart batter checker (it's more expensive, too.). The update cable link should really be included in all Smart chargers. There is a USB port for many of the chargers and this should have been designed to update the firmware. By the way, the cable referenced in the video is still out of stock and has been for many weeks. Those of us with G1 battery chargers cannot currently charge G2 batteries.

Kyle, had a question for you as I am kind of new to the RC world or should say getting reacquainted after a 15 year hiatus. In regards to Spektrum ecosystem, when you say or hear or see "SMART" what is that in reference to? Is that only in reference to the battery technology or is it actually also apply to ESC, Motor, Transmitter, Receiver, etc. I am just not sure I totally understand the Smart Technology as far as what it applies to products or if it really is meant for just referring to the batteries and chargers.

I'm fairly new to RC, like about a year and a half now and i loved what Spektrum was doing right from the start. All my Chargers batteries are Spektrum G1 and i have just added 2 G2 S2200 chargers and a couple of each 2S,3S,4S, and 6S G2 batteries and almost all my electronics are Spektrum.(I love the Telemetry) and with the addition to the new Crawler ESC and motors, my crawlers and scale RC's will be too now. Keep doing what your doing with Spektrum. @Horizon Hobby , I haven't been able to find any 2S,3S,4S, and i think 6S 5000MAH 100c G2 batteries, only been able to track down 50c variants. Are you moving away from the 100c variants or are they still to come?

Great explanation. I checked out the 2S G2 packs and they state “MAX CHARGE RATE 5C (25A)” but yet there is no G2 charger that supports charging at 25A. Is there another charger coming out that supports 25A? Was this an oversight and a firmware revision is going to be released for the S2200 charger to allow it to increase from a max of 20A to 25A? Especially since the G2 batteries cannot be charged on any non Spektrum charger on the market.

I have been using (dumb lipos) for many many years now but last week I wanted to test this smart stuff so I ordered a s155 g2 charger and 4 smart 3s 850mah g2 lipos for it. So when trying to charge them the charger gave me a error saying no batteries detected on all 4 for of them? So I measured the voltage on them with my multimeter and all 4 batteries showing 1.5 to 1.9 volts and the default storage voltage are 3.9volt/cell times 3 cells so it should be saying 11.7 volts not 1.5 Volts. That beeing said all 4 batteries where dead out of the box and could not be charged. I then tested a friends 3s 850mah g2 smart lipo and it worked fine on my charger.. Detected the battery and started the auto charge. Now I am waiting on 4 new lipos on warranty and hopefully they will work fine but after this experience I have my doughts with this smart setup and not very impressed so far sorry to say. I believe it that the circuit board built in to the lipos draw a small amount of current and over time drains these batteries but that is just my theory. 🤔 So zero benefits so far with these in my case not so smart setup.

QUESTION: Doesn't plugging the battery directly into the charger inhibit one's ability to place the battery into a firesafe pouch/container while charging? I have to wait 10 minutes until the charge process is really done and well-balanced and I see 0,1A to 0,0A pumping-in on the S2200 charger screen. Even the latest and greatest firmware update for Spektrum S2200 doesn't solve the problem. Is that normal?

I wasn't ready to use them right away, so when they arrived from Amazon four months ago, I left them in their boxes. I pulled them out today to bench test a configuration, and found that both of the batteries were dead. The first battery had one dead cell, and the other had three dead cells. These batteries are obviously programmed to brick themselves after some predetermined period of time. I wish there would have been a warning on the box, but no! So, $90 down the tubes. I'm assessing whether or not to even go forward with these PoSs any more.

  • @glenhar1225

    @glenhar1225

    3 жыл бұрын

@@horizonhobby I did watch the video and there was a hole in it. Not sure you understood the question. To clarify, assume one wants to charge a G2 batt on an older charger that is NOT smart. It is a standard balance charger. (I run a rack of 8 chargers home chargers, plus 4 field, large batts). First, will the G2 batt still attempt to fully maintain balance autonomously, without any sensing connections to that smart lead? Then a broad assumption can be made that a standard charger can be used in the then obligatory "non-balance" mode. However the charger ONLY senses 12.6v cutoff, with zero awareness of individual cells, IT is not balancing. Since that little on-batt balance circuit only has so much balance-sinking current (and heat) capacity, this is an unknown. The charger could conceivably "overrun" that little boards capacity. Thus a solid sense of that specific balancing level ability is required to have full confidence that the standard 12.6 v cutoff is indeed 'going to be' a proper cutoff and that cells are not being driven above 4.2v. Such is the classic lipo fire hazard. Ie: imagine a cell dropped more than usual. One can use an external batt checker to confirm such a safe range before non-smart charging, if one knows what that (generalized) safe range is. It could be such as 0.2v diff max at a normal 1c charge (30+ min) can be maintained , etc. However a G2-to-balance adapter that could feed cell voltages to the standard chargers balance circuit is safer, if possible by the design. If only voltage could be sensed, but no balancing current passed to the standard charger, there is still a safety factor. In such a case one is still just using the on-batts (likely lower) balancing circuits, but the standard charger can halt if sensing a fire-hazard cell over-voltage. Perhaps at the very least give us that on-batt boards balancing current capacity spec and let us determine charge routines ourselves. This of course is again assuming that on-batt circuit is fully balancing active without any smart lead connections! That is something yet specifically undefined. Implied perhaps, but not directly stated for all cases. When fires are possible, its an important point. This point is important not just for users, but for Horizon to clarify as well.

If the 5000 3s 100c were 6800 3s 100c for $99, I would get inot the smart system now! But $99 for only 5000 is too small, my vorteks will eat that in 15 minutes or less, make a 6800 capacity, or drop the 5000 to $79

I don't know much about these batteries but I do know one thing that helps me if the battery has a charging cable and the balancing cable it's a good battery if it doesn't have a bouncing cable it's dogshit because you can't charge it So be careful which 2s smart battery you buy Make sure it has that cable for balancing Best advice is stay away from this brand of battery

Dont buy any spektrum products. The s2200 charger destroyed 6 batteries that where 3 weeks old. The balance lead on channel 1 the 2nd cell reads .3 volt low so was charging to 4.5 plus volts.

Am I the only one thinks it's better for a beginner to learn how to charge batteries properly, instead of relying on the charger to know everything?

Yes. As a beginner, the main motivation should be out and having fun, not working about the different plugs, balance cables, this that or anything else.

WRONG! I got aG2 smart charger and it's awesome!...My batteries from other brands charges twice as fast and in a safely way! I sold my old chargers... With mine I can charge two batteries at once... You should try it... You won't regret!

@@ricardopr54 I have been charging more than one battery for years and I can charge them twice as fast also. It takes me less than 30 seconds to set up my older chargers and in a very safe way. The chemistry is basically the same in all lipo's.

What a load of BS. I guess he forgot to mention you cannot charge these G2 batteries with non-spektrum charging systems that you have invested $100s. This is simply pushing towards monopoly which is against my principles.
