85mm definitely. Focuses on the subject in my music videos, though it's m43 so I guess it's closer to 170mm, but I dig it. Rokinon 85mm t1. 5. Keep up the great work!

85mm is used in a lot of Movies for focusing in on a character then they switch to 35mm to give the audience perspective of the setting, wihout revealing too much, making them think about what's about to happen next. The Village is a perfect Example

Based on this it should be safe to conclude that the 24mm looks perfect for fast paced action, the 35mm for normal everyday action and the 85mm (or 50mm) is perfect for slow and surreal action.

35 and 50mm are almost interchangeable. I havnt seen any dp go that wide like 24mm they usually still to 35mm for wide actions scenes anything else becomes way too chaotic. 50mm is most commonly used it really doesn’t have a specialty you use it when ever for what ever super safe focal length and 85mm for film making is alot more rare.

I would say if you can only afford one lens and you absolutely want a prime to get a 35mm lens. It kind of does everything you need from wide shots to tighter, more intimate shots. It’s also 3-4 times lighter than zoom lenses. Just gotta use your body as the zoom. Also, don’t forget that Sony cameras all have their aps-c mode. That means you can turn a 35mm into a 52.5mm with the click of a button. The sensor oversamples on the A7IV so even on aps-c mode you’re still capturing 4.6k downsampled to 4k. Full frame mode downsamples from 7k. When I leave the house I don’t like taking a huge cache of gear. I take my camera with one lens(35mm f1.8 on the body), a mic, a mini tripod, and a variable nd filter. That setup covers me for 90% of shooting both photos and video. It took me years to finally come to terms with this setup but I’m telling you, it’s so freeing to drop all that insane, mostly unused weight.

Thanks for this video. Now, to add to all of the other elements of cinematography (lighting, aspect ratios, subject placement, camera angles, etc.) now I get to ponder focal lengths in relation to motion as am element of visual story telling.

Can't choose any 😅, all 3 of them are good in their own way while using it, & as you said it will mainly depend on what's the story, what needs to be conveyed, and the focal length. But maybe if I need to choose, I would go for the 24mm * I'm planning to go for either the Sony aps-c 50mm F1.8 OSS or Sigma 30mm f1.4 for my a6400.

this is the kind of video i was looking for, actually I bought an 85mm as my first lens which was a huge mistake, 2:25 you are explaining the issue here, now I'm aiming to buy a 35mm as my second lens, since you mentioned you were a photographer for over a decade and you were shooting with 24, 35 and 85, now my planning is making a lot of since, my plan is that i want to add a 20mm to my 35 and 85 later on.

Loved the profile 85mm - it really connected you with the subject but wasn't disorienting. You gave me an idea, too: the 85mm circle shot would work well if you're trying to convey that someone just got some bad news that has thrown their world into chaos. Man, that 24 really looked amazing for that long shot, leading shot, and the circle shot. 85 was great for the follow shot and profile shot, though the other two did alright, too.

Great comparison! So interesting to see how much the focal lenght affects the footage. I think all of these have their place in video, depending on the topic and the story as you said. Sometimes a nice wide angle view is needed when other times a narrow 85mm shot makes the footage more special 🙌🏼

i love the feel of the 85mm it gives it this sci-fi, mystery kind of feel, the 24mm/35mm feels more economic and can be used to accommodate neutral and happy feelings, I'm currently debating between getting 2 new lens and 85mm and between a 24mm/35mm prime, it's weird because on my 24-105mm when on a gimbal when shooting video, i mostly really live on the 24mm end

Technically because the lower the focal length the more the image compressed into the frame which makes everything "moves" faster due to more image is moving in the same range/size, and this is also why you see some distortion around the frame.

Wow! That first walk on 85mm is like a scene from some TV series! You showed some amazing features I didn't think of before! Also the actress is looking good in the shot. Thank you.

Hey Joris. Great Video. Seriously, this taught so much more than taking a full course on Filmmaking or Cinematography. Quick Question - Why is that majority of the filmmaker when shooting B Roll specially Slow Motion shots prefer to a telephoto lens like 50mm or 85mm. Why can slow movement be done with a Wide Angle Lens?

But can I ask (and this is an old video, so I don't expect a response) but what would be the difference between shooting wide in 24 and 'tight' in 85, as opposed to only shooting with a 24, and then just cropping in? Hey, that is really a very good video! I have been a photographer since I was a child and have been photographing professionally for the last 16 years. I have also discovered video for myself some time ago. I was shooting weddings 99% of the time with two cameras, using a 50mm and a 35mm lens. Now, I have a 24mm lens that I absolutely love and use almost all the time for my videos, along with a 50mm. Since I got a new camera, I still need to buy the 35mm lens. I'm not sure if I really need it, but I don't want to miss having it. For me, 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm are the most important focal lengths. I use only prime lenses. I liked the shots with the 24mm lens the best. It was great to see them compared like this!

Hello Sir thanks. Thinking about portraits... so for bg blur go long on tripod. For less blur 24mm. Saving for a Canon 10 18mm. Got 18 - 250 covered with kits and auto focus EF film Rebel film lens 28 90mm less switching for portraits. Thanks for sharimg. May get a 24mm prime for size and weigth in car on a canon SL1 crop. You are an amazimg person. Ideas Rebel EF film lenses and canon 10 18mm for crop.

I've tried some walking shots with a Ronin RSC2 but the gimbal wouldn't hold the camera still which was very disappointing and ended up returning the gimbal. I'm sure some of it was user error but it would shake from left to right and couldn't seem to get it to stop that... thanks again for replying :)

i think about the sony trio 24 - F2.8G and 40 + 50 mm F2.5G. What would you buy 40 or 50mm? for video. Do you do b-roll in 50mm or 85mm? Thank you for your videos !!!! Love them !

So these differences have to be created by the respective lenses and not by moving in or away from your subject (eg a 35mm moved in closer to the subject to mimic a 70mm distance)right?

hey, weighing in late here. To me when using the 24mm the background needs to be interesting or at least NOT distracting, which I felt it was in the shots where there is a truck or hanger behind her. The 35mm blurs the background a bit more, which helps. And the 85mm definitely feels more interesting for cinematic shots, isolates the character. What do you think about the 50mm focal length for gimbal work?

I really want to buy a 24mm 1.8 for my Lumix S5, but as it crops 1.5 when shooting in 50/60fps, I'm not sure it's with it. I already own a 18mm, 35, 50 & 85. what do you think?

I liked both extremes in different situations. I shoot woodturning or carving mostly, so close up rather static shots. would you recommend a 35mm for that?

Well, when I was studying photography, I used an 85mm a lot for product shots in the school studio. Things like perfume bottles and drink bottles.

bro, if you added shutter speed tests and running tests to focal lenghts tests, that would have been the ultimate reference video for videography

I like 35 most, 85 next. My Canon M50 22mm is equivalent of FF 35mm so I don't need to upgrade my lens. Maybe for 85mm but I doubt I would use it often. I could get old EF50mm lens with EF-M adapter.

Great video Joris. I love the 85mm where she was walking and giusto took a side shot. Was that colour graded or is it straight from the camera. Did you take it with a Sony A7 iii? I love the quality it's amazing. Also is that field location local to you? It's a really nice place to shoot. Seems quite at times. At least I noticed it stopped raining now lol.

Color graded but it was a pain in the ass with all that yellow and green reflecting 🤯😄 it’s a nice place 2 minute walking from here.

Wow.. it's so helpfull. My conclusion is, if it's not for vlogging, 35 is the only lens you need.
