Those buffalo are incredible, I really need to plan a trip to go hunt for them sometime. I’ve never dove Texas, but it’s pretty common for vis to drop off past 40-50ft in freshwater. And there’s not a lot of reason to go down there because apart from being dark and cold, most of your target species like to hang out in the shallower 10-30ft zones anyway.

@@BradenSherron Texas is a warmer climate than I’m used to so there could be some differences, but usually it’s around the thermocline that you find fish activity. Small fish that like the warm water and bigger predatory fish that like it a little colder hunting in and out of that temperature change. Also oxygen levels play into it. The deep dark cold water has less oxygen, than the warmer shallow water where the plants and algae are.

Any tips on holding your breath for so long?

  • @BradenSherron

Learn from a ton of freediving training videos and just practice practice practice. Breathholds is a gradual process. The more you dive the better you get. If you’re practicing holding your breath though always have someone to spot you. & be very conscious of avoiding hyperventilating.

Why you need three to spearfish TX fresh water lakes. I will address. I stuck a large buffalo in Amistad, so decided to bake it. I ate half then realized it was a greasy carp, so to each his own. What is "most" excellent to eat is Mr Black Bass with his 1/2 " to 3/4" thick fillets. This is why you need three persons. Two in water and the other keeping an eye pealed for TX Game Warden. Just kidding me neighbor is such an office. He said perch is considered a game fish which TX will ask $1000 per game fish taken. The logic is hard to understand. Amistad is the Rio Grande and Elephant Butte NM is the Rio Grande, yet in NM you can spearfish game like bass and wall eye. What is a little crazy is Arizona will encourage you to spear Colorado River Striper Bass; not to mention, it legal to take other kinds of game fish. Maybe you should bring up the subject in your videos since the sport is growing in Texas. I say this because you do a great job with the videos.

😂😂 yeah I initially really wanted to hunt striper but we’re pretty limited with the laws. Definitely have been eyeing other states to hunt more species. I did re check the regs though, only see crappie being a gamefish didn’t see anything about bluegill or perch etc..

@@BradenSherron Utah, Arizona/Nevada and Arkansas have good freshwater striper hunting. Several states are riding the momentum of recent changes in Michigan and pushing for more opportunity for spearfishing freshwater gamefish. Might be a good time to make a similar effort in Texas.

I went from pacific to Arizona for college and got pretty into the striper and carp spearing there. There’s plenty of good spots for big striper in AZ
