Speaking Skills: Slowing Your In-Breath

voiceandspeech.com/voice-probl...
Speaking with quick in-breaths is a common habit that has serious consequences for your speech. Fast breaths tend to be small, tense and shallow, so that’s exactly how you sound. Learning to inhale slowly helps you breathe in a way that’s deep, full and relaxed. This will have far-reaching benefits for your speaking skills.

The rate at which you speak is a deeply ingrained habit. I think you've got the right idea, though. Start by reading aloud. That will help to reinforce the feeling of taking your time and being less rushed. Then, by small steps, start transferring that skill into conversation. It's going to take a while, but it will happen if you make it a priority.

Rather than trying to read whole sentences on one breath, try speaking with shorter phrases, no more than 6-8 words per breath. You'll have more time to breathe, you'll feel more in control and your listeners will have better comprehension.

Speak while exhaling. Breath is the power that makes your vocal folds vibrate. Imagine your breath "flowing the sound from your body" rather than muscles squeezing the sound from your body. Hello Sir, Only 1-2 seconds in-breath will support for next 4-6 seconds outbreath while speaking? My question is should we do diaphragmatic Breathing/inflating belly in-breath in this 1-2 seconds ? And after 1-2 seconds in-breath, I should exhale it without any pause? Thank you.

  • @voiceandspeech

For beginning students I like to hear them taking a breath every 4-6 words, at least in their practice. If you can incorporate a belly breath into that process that's even better. And yes, you should begin speaking immediately after the in-breath without holding your breath.

Sometimes there's nothing you can do. I had a fellow student, in grad school, who repeatedly interrupted others. I actually experimented with talking over her, but it didn't phase her. She didn't even notice and always outlasted me lol. If you don't want to yield the floor you might say, firmly but calmly, "Excuse me, I haven't finished," if it matters enough to make a point of it.

+chetan suralkar I have two suggestions. 1) Pause for a relaxed mouth-breath before you begin to speak. It will help settle your mind and get you present. 2) It sounds like you're more focused on what you're saying rather than who's listening. Be more conscious that speaking is all about caring for your listener and you'll be less prone to leaving them in the dust.

Satyam, my initial instinct is that your need to relax and slow the speed of your speech. The first strategy to accomplish that would be breathing, so this is a good video for you. But you also need to pay attention to physical relaxation and sound, do I suggest you play around with this video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqKgrdGth6-6os4.html If you like the results, go to my web site and sign up for the free mini courses.
