Stop My Voice from Shaking! - Public Speaking and a Trembling Voice

Don’t you just hate it when you’re speaking in public and your voice starts shaking? There’s nothing that screams NERVOUS!! like a trembling voice. Trying to control a quivering voice just makes it worse. Here are three broad techniques that enable you to channel that energy constructively.

    Yes, it can be very frustrating. Learning some basic vocal technique and reinforcing those skills should give you much more control in those situations. I hope the information in the video at least points you in the right direction.

I couldn't be a person I want to be. But since I started watching your videos, I have benefited a lot from your videos, I have changed a lot. You saved me. I can now speak in a slow and relaxed way. My conversations last longer. I can pick up my phone and ring people. Please keep posting new videos , and reinforce those key methods. I had to present to 20+ people for the first time in forever because of Covid, and my voice started trembling and shaking throughout the whole presentation. I felt extremely embarrassed and the worst part is it wasn't even in person, it was online yet it still happened. Whenever I am not confident about presenting something, I get nervous. I also lost my train of thought and had to abruptly pause multiple times to look at my notes which made my voice tremble even more. I could just tell everyone was cringing or feeling awkward because that's what happens to me when someone else's voice starts to shake when presenting. The final nail in the coffin was when I was essentially sent a pity message by someone, which I appreciated, but confirmed to me that it was as bad as I thought. I think I have to admit at this point that I have social anxiety.

  • @voiceandspeech

    @voiceandspeech

    Gah! I'm sorry you had to go through that. It must have been a demoralizing experience. There were probably many factors at work, simultaneously, including your level of preparation and rehearsal, experience and confidence, sabotaging thoughts and personal stories, misplaced focus, lack of breath and vocal technique and so on. It's a complicated issue but not a hopeless one. There's probably not one single solution, but I would encourage you to pick one that would make the most difference in your situation and take action to address that issue. It will take time and focused effort but you can make noticeable progress. Some of my most committed students have had experiences like yours that served as a wake-up call, motivating them to take action, get training, and they've been able to turn that difficult experience into a success story.

    @@advenco344 I think practicing in front of a video camera is pretty effective. It puts a bit of pressure on you without having to deal with real eyeballs. Eventually though, you'll have to find a way to get in front of a live audience. (Toastmasters is a good organization for that if you don't have other opportunities.) But take it in small steps. That's really important. Incremental exposure is a VERY effective approach to dealing with any type of phobia.

    Your voice is very sensitive to stress, and all of us have been under a lot of stress over the past months. Be kind and patient with yourself. Beating yourself up only makes the situation worse. Find practices that promote relaxation, breathing and open sound. Just do your practice and accept the result for what it is. The outcome will always be imperfect, but you will see improvement over time. Good luck.

    I just got back into in-person school and I get a lot of anxiety when put on the spot. I’m completely fine with talking to people 1 on 1 or a group of people I’m comfortable with. But when it’s a new group of students I don’t know or don’t feel comfortable with, I tend to become more reserved and a sense that they are very judgmental in a way... great tips tho! But when I get very anxious (like a panic attack) my mind is completely blank and the only thing I can think about is the thing making me anxious...it’s a indescribable feeling. I feel my heart dropping, almost blackout, I would think it’s the end of the world if I don’t get it over with..

    That's the advantage of training. It enables you to notice the subtle signs of anxiety very early, when it's fairly easy to intervene and manage the response. The untrained person often misses the early warning signs and doesn't notice until it's advanced to the point where it's difficult to do something about it.

    I had 3 presentations for different subjects, my voice slightly trebled for one class, didn’t think much of it, for my other class it didn’t tremble at all, I wasn’t nervous, but at my third presentation my voice was trembling so much, I tried to make my presentation slow and fluent but because of my nervousness I lost marks and was just really embarrassing, people thought I was crying, etc, I don’t really understand why I get really nervous I’m really social going and have many friends, I don’t know if I have some sort of social anxiety or something because I’m really shy when I’m speaking to the older teachers but when it comes to the younger ones I speak perfectly fine to them.

  • @voiceandspeech

    That's a very important point, and I feel your frustration. A 5-minute video can make it seem quick and easy., and it's not. You can't change your breathing habits just from watching a video. It takes time and practice, especially when you need to apply it in high-pressure situations. Don't give up because you can't make it work right away. Give it 3-6 months, maybe more, depending on the situation where you want to make it work. "Deep breathing" is almost a cliche in the speaking world but most people don't even know how that feels, let alone how to apply it when they're feeling under pressure. This powerful principle is true, but that doesn't mean that applying it is easy.

    This is why time and practice are required. If the technique isn't already well established, it won't be possible to apply it under pressure. Bruce Lee wrote, "Under duress, we do not rise to our expectations, we fall to the level of our practice." This is especially true for public speaking.

    In my view, stuttering is more of an articulation issue whereas shaky voice is more of a phonation issue. Since I'm not a speech therapist, I can't speak authoritatively on the topic of stuttering, but I'd assume that anything enhancing relaxation, breathing and a fully engaged sound would probably be helpful at some level.
