My husband and I used to visit a shut-in every week. She was a past Pentecostal Preacher. After she started feeling really comfortable with us she started asking us why we didn't speak in tongues. She enjoyed reading the scriptures and praying a lot. After she started pushing the idea of speaking in tongues she started doing it when she prayed. I saw right through the game she was playing and especially when she said "shama lama" in one of her speaking in tongues episodes. You have no idea how badly I wanted to say "ding dong" after hearing her say that.

Went to an evangelical church where speaking in tongues and writhing on the floor was common. I didn't experience the "holy spirit" and didn't do these things - which led to quite a bit of gossip in the church. Felt so much pressure that I just faked it by speaking in gibberish and rolling around on the floor. The pastor and congregation were so pleased that I'd "finally been touched by the holy spirit." Left and never looked back.

Yeah, I think that is what is actually going on, I remember thinking how I must not be chosen because I see others with their hands in the air rocking back and forth and side to side in a state of ecstasy, one feels compelled to do it as well because you don't want to seem to others that you haven't been 'touched' by the holy spirit. 'What is wrong with me, has Jesus rejected me? What are these people doing right that I just don't get, I must be a real hard-head, or I am unworthy?' Even in church there is competition to be 'Holier than Thou'.

I thought, "I'm going to have some fun here, and see if they find me out", so I recited the "One Ring to rule them All" speech from "Lord Of The Rings", in the Black Speech of Mordor..."Ash nazg durbatuluk", etc. Not one person there, even the Pastor, stopped me to say..."Hang on, that's from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings!!" That's what helped me to become Atheist.

Simply put there's a man without observing closely the followers of atheistic humanist gender faith simply identified as a woman and entered a weightlifting contest For women and now he's a record-breaker.. when entering the contest it's the first time he ever identified as a woman and right after the contest he no longer identified as a woman. He didn't have to change anything about himself , the only thing he had to do is say the word he's a woman to qualify. Yes people can repeat the actions of other people and or make claims, pretend the actions that they're taking are based in legitimate beliefs.. so I really don't understand the point of your story it has as much merit as my story.. you can pretend to believe something and claim to believe something . Even a dull-witted 5 year old child would understand this. Do you know how many men are in women's prisons just because they pretended to be a woman by saying the words I'm a woman and nothing else.

Let me tell you all about the time I was able to speak in tongues. I was raised into an Irish Catholic family from 1954. I was always religious and, as a young boy, had a little May altar. I went to mass whenever I had to and accepted everything I was told. I said my morning and night prayers. At no time did I ever feel anything spiritual, but I accepted this as normal. In my late 20s I became friends with a Charismatic which was sweeping Ireland at the time. He enthused me with the love God had for me and all I had to do was ask him to enter me with total conviction and he would do so. I humbly and sincerely asked Jesus to enter me while my friend prayed over me. I felt nothing but assumed Jesus was within me. We went to charismatic meetings where we prayed together and once when I opened my mouth to pray strange words came out which delighted my friend who already had the gift of tongues. I didn’t feel the spirit within me but put it down to the psychological situation of the time. The years passed, I lost my religion, never needed tongues and today am a contented atheist. Along with my wife and 2 daughters who were also raised Catholic but learned to think for themselves.

I saw two of the most heartbreaking things at a charismatic church. I was invited, and I go to these things when invited, if for no other reason than so I can help people escape them... and when it came time for the part where people get "slain in the spirit," I saw a little kid, maybe 6 or 7 years old, watching all his friends falling over because they were getting into the moment. The boy desperately wanted God to take him, too... he was sitting there straining, clenching his fists, trying to feel something from God, not understanding why he wasn't falling down, and then he started to cry, hard, like a kid who just fell and bounced their head off the ground. Later on in that same meeting, the guy who invited us went up to accept the spirit... he must have weighed about 450 pounds. Whenever somebody went up to get slain in the spirit, ushers would get behind them to help make sure they didn't hurt themselves when they fell. One really tiny lady got up behind him, and you could tell he wanted the spirit to take him, but he knew that he couldn't just go through with it and fall over because he would have crushed that lady.

When I was a theist, we had a guest pastor come along one evening who was renowned for "bringing the Holy Spirit into the congregation". I recall the mind tricks he used, like asking the congregation if they were truly worthy and if they had committed enough. It become a very emotional thing for a lot of the people there who went inside their own thoughts pretty deep while he used the power of suggestion. People were crying and people were praying together and all that. At the end, when the pastor asked people to share their experiences one of the ladies in the congregation proudly announced that she was speaking in tongues. I was sat next to her, she wasn't speaking in tongues. She was praying in English. In other words, "look at me, I'm one of God's favourites and I'm filled with the Holy Spirit and you're not at my level". Basically, the pastor guilted people in a fervour.

Speaking in tongues for non-Christians: 1) Randomize vowels sounds by randomly changing the shape of the mouth: as in a-e-i-o-u- into a-e-a-i-u-e-u-i-a-o-e-i-a-i-o-e-a-i-a-i-o-i-e- etc. 2) Randomize consonants by mentally jumping around the alphabet: b,t,h,k,w,p,q,z,r,t,s,r, etc, 3) Combine random vowels and consonants together in random combinations: badi fovaratqui gofo haci doko 4) Make some combinations longer and others shorter plus add accents to mimic language In this simple way ANYONE can learn to speak in 'tongues'. Here is some typing in tongues but I could easily do this live: Zolaki do prosquota zim faertaci bun doka linadart poquetta barka dolla wertna veraxio sik lunka badredna If you speak is harsh guttural jabs it can easily sound like mock Klingon. A long and detailed study carried out back in the early 1970’s by the famous Professor of Linguistics, William J Samarin. From all around the world he gathered and recorded many samples of “Speaking in Tongues”. All this data was then put through an extensive analysis over a period of five years. His conclusions were as follows: 1. While speaking in tongues does appear at first to resemble human language, that was only on the surface. The actual stream of speech was not organised and there was no existing relationship between units of speech and concepts. The speakers might believe it to be a real language, but it was totally meaningless Its peer reviewed research carried out over many years by a highly qualified open-minded linguist. 2. Speaking-in-tongues is nothing but empty babbling by devoted believers who have deluded themselves into thinking it to be a sign of the Holy Spirit. 3. The modern practise as we see it today is not all that old, it dates back to about 1906 in Los Angeles. Having first started in a revival there, it has since then spread in a viral like manner both geographically around the globe, and also chronologically on to each successive generation. Modern practitioners claim that what they are doing is exactly the same as the experience described within the Book of Acts (2:1-13), however one huge discrepancy is that the story within Book of Acts describes recognised languages from all around the Roman Empire being spoken. In stark contrast, nobody understands the modern mindless babbling.

But in my 20s, I was a Christian and once was in a row of people where the preacher was working his way down the row, laying hands on people, and most were falling. I was aware he was coming to me, and I braced myself to prevent myself going down. When he got to me, he didn't even touch me and it seemed like gravity turned upside down!! I fell backwards, my bum hit the floor and I bounced back up because I didn't want to fall!!! I have concluded that it's some psychological thing going on, but it certainly was real.

One person in the congregation would just suddenly start babbling and then after they were done the preacher would translate what they said. After I woke up, I came to the idea that it was all just group hysteria. My Aunt use to have her own production company in LA and one of the traveling preachers came to town and she went in and set up for them. I learned so much about how phony all churches were! The speaking in tongues thing comes from the ending of the book of Mark where it talks about believers having the ability to heal people, drink poisons without dying, and of course speak in "tongues." It sure is interesting to me That you never see Christians going to hospitals and healing all the sick patients, you never see them drink poisons and survive, but the one and only thing on that list that that you do see them do on a regular basis is the only thing there that is easily fakeable. How convenient!! 😂

What I find hilarious are the snake handlers. Mark 16:17-18 And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Various figures for the total number of deaths from snakebite during religious services have been proposed: "over 100 documented deaths" (2003) by Ralph Hood. "around 120" (2005) by Robert Winston. "about 100 deaths" (2013) by Julia Duin, a journalist who has covered snake handling churches and is writing a book on the subject. "91 documented snake bite deaths" (2015) by Paul Williamson, professor of psychology at Henderson State University and co-author of books with Ralph Hood. "105 cases that were found in literature."(2015) by Amy Waters. Another source indicates that 35 people died between 1936 and 1973. *It’s a venomous snake…F around and find out.*

The preacher layed his hand on my forehead and pushed me down. He started speaking gibberish and kept telling (actually yelling at me) to let the Holy Ghost enter me. Not really understanding what was expected of me, i started repeating the gibberish he was saying. He started yelling to everyone that Jesus has saved me and im now filled with the Holy Ghost. I was so confused. I was just repeating what the preacher had said.

In my Anthropology of Religion class a couple decades back, they showed an older film to the class of a Church here in Indiana where they did the snake-tossing and the speaking in tongues. One of the first things they pointed out is that the anthropologist can gain a significant amount of information without even entering the Church itself -- just by looking at the cars in the parking lot. They were almost all run-down cars. The congregants were mostly extremely poor. The film ended showing these little kids who were about maybe 6 to 8 years old, perhaps brother and sister, I can't remember. But they were MIMICING what they saw the adults doing with the glossolalia. When those kids get older, they're going to fit right in. It's obviously learned behavior.

I've always found it fascinating that these people "speaking in tongues" find faith in the action, despite it being completely unrelated to the bible story. In the bible, when people are speaking in tongues, they are not spouting gibberish, they are translating the sermon for people who can't understand it. Now if THAT happened, it would be evidentiary, though of course it's pretty easy to fake or just lie about. But just standing up and going "gee gee gaw gaw hoopity hoola" is meaningless. Now I have heard stories that I find credible of people spouting gibberish and honestly believing that their gibberish was inspired by the holy spirit. But I would expect even a theist to roll their eyes at it.
