Speaker Bercow: Trump should not speak in Parliament - BBC News

House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has said he would be "strongly opposed" to US President Donald Trump addressing the Houses of Parliament during his state visit to the UK. Mr Bercow told MPs "opposition to racism and sexism" were "hugely important considerations". He was applauded by SNP MPs after his comments.
President Trump was invited to make a state visit after meeting Theresa May in Washington last month.

The Speaker is the chief officer and highest authority of the House of Commons and must remain politically impartial at all times. It is clear by his actions that he has an anti Brexit agenda. after blocking bids by MPs to rule out second referendum. He and his family drive around in a car with a sticker that says "Bollocks to Brexit". Bullying - calling ex-commons staffer a 'little girl'. I am shocked and horrified at this statement. I know the world is going to pot but when a speaker in our house of commons throws his neutrality out the window like this and makes his own bias public knowledge it shows how far the rot has gone. He needs to apologise and retract or step down.

A Parliamentary System is cheap democracy, the Prime Minister has no term limits and can serve hypothetically for as long as they are able to keep their party in power. Margaret Thatcher stayed in power for a generation.

Is this how you respect the UK's democracy in the US???? @The Real Mexican how a parliamentary system is a cheap democracy is above me, but whatever Also, saying that a parliamentary system is cheap and using the UK, a constitutional monarchy, as an example also is not the wisest move. 11 years is hardly a generation, that is not even three full US president terms

You know, I'm happy to have heard this, and I think it should be par for the course for Trump. But... izzat wise? Alienating the USA while being in the middle of Brexit, I mean. Who's left for an ally, Russia? Sincerely, a worried viewer from outside the Anglosphere.

A common attitude in the West allied world right now is to oppose Trump, but maintain faith in America as a country. Trump's lack of understanding of global politics, egocentric grandstanding and fondness of dictators is viewed more as his personality and opinions, not necessarily representative of America, all of it's people or the will of congress as a whole. Basically, we're just riding this out until someone politically competent is elected, of either party. Speaking as someone from Australia, with a particular interest in European politics, more educated on English ones. Of course, I could well be wrong.

Well ok, but, he's still president for 5 years. He did achieve the promises that actually brought him votes, like the creation of jobs for the unemployed (mostly by virtue of the global economy being favourable), so I don't think the biggest group of Trump voters will switch. Though nominating Trump again might bring out more uncommitted Democrats to the polling station (must be a crazy thing to talk about for an Australian), so maybe? IDK, but him staying for 5 years must be at least considered.
