These guys all went to Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana in the early 1950s. They definitely made everybody in Gary and Lake County proud. Great voices. They are truly missed.

My papa used to sing this song to help us fall asleep when we were little girls. When we wanted him to keep singing we would do the "DO DO DO BOOP BOOP" part over and over and when we slowed and stopped he knew we were sleeping. Adorbs.

The "Boop Boop" part made me laugh. :-) They don't say that, it's just: "Do do do, do doooo". But still, that's a great story, and I'm glad my uncle and his group created such fond memories for you and your family.

I saw The Spaniels at a doo wop concert way back in the 70's. They were the last of 7 acts to perform. When The Spaniels took the stage, the bass singer was totally drunk. But he didn't miss his cue at the beginning of the song.

Gotta love this song--reminds me of saying goodnight to my high school girl on her porch many times, hoping her dad was asleep, usually was thank goodness. Long time ago, now just memories will have to do.

They were Gary's first megastars, (before the Jackson 5, Deniece Williams, Jesse Powell, etc.) and they were one of the first 2 groups signed by VeeJay Records (who later recorded The El Dorados, The Dells, and even THE BEATLES recorded their first American records on that label). It makes me sad that more people aren't aware of The Spaniels' contributions to Gary, and to American music collectively (Doo Wop. R&B, Rock, and some even say they wrote the first Rap record- 'Play It Cool'). Their legendary bass, Gerald Gregory, was my uncle. I've been reaching out to some people, trying to get their story told.

I can confirm that- that is definitely Gerald Gregory (he was my uncle). Their historian, Richard Carter, wrote that his opening bass-line "Do Do Do, Do Dooo" were the most famous five notes in American Pop Music History. Uncle Gerald was starting to fade (from 4 decades of hard living) when this was recorded; but he was a Spaniel until the end. He's got my vote for the greatest bass of all time (most seem to have him 2nd, but as long as he's in your top 3 I won't argue with you). :D

Richard-for my money Gerald was No 1.And yes he was as the story goes a hard drinker and life on the road wasn't always easy.He told me he lived in Brooklyn for some time(I 've lived here my whole life).I asked him at Westbury what tunes he liked to sing other than Spaniels songs and he went right into Masquerade Is Over.A nice nice gentleman IMO his So Deep Within is one of the all time beautiful songs.
